More RTX 50-series price hikes show scalpers aren't the only problem
No matter the GPU you search for in the Asus Store, you'll be hard-pressed to find one actually selling at MSRP. That, in itself, isn't strange. Asus, being Nvidia's and AMD's board partner, makes its own versions of GPUs, and those cards often come at a premium due to things like more overclocking headroom or superior cooling. So, a higher price is to be expected, although AIBs should still offer a couple of models at MSRP.
A higher price is to be expected. It's the continuous price hikes that are worrying me.
As spotted by VideoCardz, Asus adjusted the pricing for its RTX 5090 graphics cards. The most premium model, the ROG Astral LC, stayed at its (already eye-watering) price of $3,410; that's the price you'll have to pay for a liquid-cooled card. However, the air-cooled model now costs $3,360, which is not much less than the one with the liquid cooler, and a whopping $280 more than it did before.
The TUF models went up in price, too. The overclocked model has now hit $3,000; meanwhile, the non-OC variant costs $2,760. Considering that the MSRP for the RTX 5090 was supposed to be $1,999, all of these are a far cry from what we started with in late January.
Even cheaper GPUs aren't safe from the price hikes. AMD's RX 9070 XT is completely unavailable at MSRP, all the while Nvidia's (supposedly) $550 goes up to $700 and beyond.
It's a tough time to be a PC gamer. Some RTX 5090 cards sell for up to $6,000, all thanks to scalpers — but those are few and far apart. However, the lack of availability compared to the big demand for the new GPUs is driving lasting price changes. We might see these GPUs drop down to MSRP one day, but I'm afraid it won't be anytime soon.

5 Top Tech Stocks to Buy Right Now
Nvidia and AMD look to be big AI infrastructure beneficiaries. Meta and Pinterest are using AI to improve user engagement and their ad campaigns. Alphabet's collection of strong businesses should not be overlooked. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › Technology stocks have helped lead the market higher over the past several years, and with the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), they look poised to continue to lead the way. Let's look at five top tech stocks catching the AI tailwinds that you might want to consider buying right now. When it comes to AI infrastructure, Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has been the clear-cut winner. Its graphics processing units (GPUs) are being used to power the massive AI data center build-out, and its growth is showing no signs of slowing down. Last quarter, the chipmaker grew its revenue by 69% year over year to $44.1 billion, with data center sales soaring 73% to $39.1 billion. That's about a ninefold jump in data center revenue from just two years ago. Nvidia took a huge 92% share in the GPU space in the first quarter. Its wide moat stems from its CUDA software platform. It pushed the software into universities and research labs early on, which made it the platform developers used in order to learn to program GPUs. And it has since built tools and libraries on top of CUDA to help speed up development and improve the performance of its chips. As AI infrastructure spending continues to ramp up, Nvidia is sure to benefit. Another company benefiting from the AI infrastructure build-out is Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD). Last quarter, its revenue jumped 36% year over year, while its data center business grew 57%. While a distant No. 2 to Nvidia in GPUs, the company has established itself as a leader in central processing units (CPUs) for data centers. However, its biggest opportunity is with AI inference. It's less technically demanding than AI model training, which reduces some of CUDA's advantages. This has allowed AMD to carve a niche in inference, a market that is eventually expected to become much larger than the one for training. As the leader in the CPU market and with a big inference opportunity, AMD is in a strong position. It doesn't need to take a huge share away from Nvidia; just small gains in market share will go a long way. Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) is becoming a digital marketing AI leader. It has created a proprietary AI model called Llama to boost user engagement. At the same time, advertisers are using it to create more effective ad campaigns and to better target users. This is leading to more ad inventory and higher ad prices. In the most recent quarter, Meta's ad impressions rose 5%, while ad prices jumped 10%. Its biggest opportunity, though, is in bringing ads to its newer platforms. It just began serving ads on its popular messaging platform WhatsApp, which has over 3 billion users. It has built out the user base of its newest social media source, Threads, to 350 million monthly users, and is just gradually introducing ads to the platform. Meta's leadership in digital advertising, combined with its AI investments and new platform expansion, sets it up for solid growth in the coming years. Despite some investor concerns over AI's potential to disrupt its search business, Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG) remains well-positioned. While search and AI continue to evolve, Google has two big advantages. The first is distribution: Its Android smartphone operating systems, Chrome browser, and Apple revenue-sharing agreement, make it the default search engine on most devices. And it has spent decades building out one of the most far-reaching ad networks in the world, which allows it to serve everything from global brands to local service providers. At the same time, the company has become a cloud computing leader. Last quarter, Google Cloud saw its revenue jump 28%, as customers used its platform to build their own AI models and tools. Investors also shouldn't ignore the company's custom AI chips, called Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). Google Cloud is using them internally to improve performance and save costs, but news recently surfaced that OpenAI is renting the chips to help power ChatGPT. The company's robotaxi business, Waymo, also has strong long-term potential. It has seen strong early demand and is now expanding into other U.S. cities. With AI, cloud computing, and robotaxis, Alphabet remains a cutting-edge technology company. Pinterest (NYSE: PINS) has leaned heavily into AI and making its platform more shoppable in recent years. These investments are starting to pay off with user engagement rising and average revenue per user (ARPU) increasing. A partnership with Google, meanwhile, has helped Pinterest better monetize its huge international user base. Now, the company is looking toward its new ad tool, Performance+, to help drive growth. It combines AI and automation to let advertisers quickly create and manage ad campaigns, while automatically handling ad targeting and bidding. With its platform improvements and Performance+, Pinterest could see strong future growth. Which AI Stock Has More Upside: Nvidia or Palantir?
Nvidia and Palantir have been two of the biggest AI winners over the past few years. Nvidia has become the dominant player in AI infrastructure, with its GPUs the backbone of the data center buildout. Palantir has taken a unique approach to AI, as it looks to become an AI operating system. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › Two of the biggest artificial intelligence (AI) winners in recent years have been Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) and Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR). Given how much growth both stocks have already registered, investors may be wondering which stock has the most additional upside from here. The quick answer to that question is Palantir, largely based on it being a much smaller company. Both stocks have solid upside potential, so let's look at what they each bring to the table. Nvidia has become the best way to play AI infrastructure, and with good reason. The company's graphics processing units (GPUs) are the backbone of the data center AI build-out, and the numbers tell the story. Last quarter, Nvidia's data center revenue hit $39.1 billion, up more than ninefold from $4.3 billion in quarterly revenue just two years ago. That kind of growth at such a huge scale is unheard of, and it's a direct result of Nvidia's dominance in the space. What sets Nvidia apart isn't just its chips; it's its CUDA software platform that creates the moat. GPUs were originally developed to help speed up graphics rendering in video games, and Nvidia created CUDA as a way to let developers program its chips for other tasks. While it took a long time for GPUs to gain significant traction outside of video games, Nvidia made the smart decision of pushing CUDA into research labs and universities early on. This ensured that developers learned to program GPUs on its software, and it was also where early AI development began. In the years since, Nvidia has built out a full stack of tools and libraries on top of CUDA that can help speed up development and improve the performance of its chips. The result? A 92% market share in GPUs in Q1. Nvidia isn't resting on that lead. It's sped up the development cycle of its chips from releases once every two years or so to new releases once a year to help ensure it keeps its market lead. The company is also pushing into other high-growth areas like autonomous driving. Last quarter, automotive revenue jumped 72% year over year to $567 million, and Nvidia expects that to hit $5 billion this year. Nonetheless, the company is now closing in on a $4 trillion market cap, and the law of large numbers does come into play. As great as Nvidia is, percentage gains from here may not be as dramatic as they've been in the past. It's still a solid stock to own for the long haul, but the days of doubling or tripling its share price in a year may be over. While Nvidia is the dominant AI player on the hardware side, Palantir is looking to become the top dog on the software side. The company has taken a very different path than most with AI, and that's what makes it so compelling. Rather than competing to build the best AI model, it has built the orchestration layer that puts those models to work in real-world operations. The company's Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP) is already being used across industries to run everything from hospital risk monitoring to underwriting for insurers. Recently, it introduced new AI agents that not only suggest actions but can execute the actions as well. Palantir just posted its seventh straight quarter of accelerating revenue growth, with total revenue up 39% year over year. U.S. commercial sales jumped 71%, and future deal value surged 127%. That shows AIP is more than just hype, and it is seeing strong momentum. The company's government business remains strong as well, with U.S. government revenue up 45%. And with a recent NATO win, international defense could become a third growth pillar. While the stock trades at a sky-high price-to-sales (P/S) multiple, the company is uniquely positioned in the AI space. Customers are quickly moving from prototypes to full-scale rollouts, and multiyear deals are stacking up. The use cases span nearly every major sector, including healthcare, energy, finance, and defense, which gives Palantir a massive long-term runway. AIP is becoming the AI operating system for enterprises, and companies that control operating systems -- think Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet -- tend to grow into giants. The valuation is rich, no question, but if Palantir can consistently grow its revenue around a 40% clip, it could grow into its multiple over time. With that kind of growth, $30 billion in revenue within the next six years isn't unthinkable. That would make today's P/S look reasonable in hindsight. Both companies are leaders in their respective corners of the AI ecosystem. Nvidia is the leader in AI infrastructure, and Palantir is building the layer that puts it to work. Nvidia is a solid long-term holding, but Palantir has more upside, especially if AIP becomes the default AI operating system.
