'Media would write Sridevis dumb, I refuse to believe that': Poonam Dhillon
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 30 (ANI): Veteran actor Poonam Dhillon, who won countless hearts with her graceful screen presence and ethereal beauty as part of Indian cinema since the late 70s, continues to captivate audiences with her timeless charm. Recently, Poonam sat down with ANI to give a sneak peek into how yesteryear actresses used to behave on and off sets. Poonam quipped, "Oh, I've done that for years. I was this dumb blonde. I didn't understand anything anybody was saying for years and years." She also explained why earlier heroines used to behave in such a manner. And it does make sense. "It was for two reasons. Sometimes if non-veg jokes were being cracked on the set so you didn't sit and guffaw with them. You just pretended you didn't understand only what they've said. So that, you know, that little distance is maintained. Because the moment you start backslapping and cracking non-veg jokes with the heroes, they, in our times, used to think that it's a signal that you are a little more than willing for certain things. So being dumb was very convenient for years," Poonam said. She also talked about how the media had misconceptions about late actor Sridevi. "Sridevi is such a brilliant actor. She cannot be so brilliant if she were dumb. The media would write, 'oh she's dumb. She'll say ask mummy, ask mummy.' I say that's a ploy. She's a very bright and sharp girl. Otherwise, how can she be such an amazing actor? I refuse to believe it," Poonam recalled. Poonam worked with Sridevi in films such as 'Sone Pe Suhaaga' and 'Judaai'. Poonam's films 'Red Rose' and 'Nishana' were also Hindi remakes of Sridevi's notable movies in Tamil and Telugu languages. Opening up about her experience working with the late star, Poonam shared, "I've always been an admirer of her work. I have worked with her in a couple of she was a subdued person." Sridevi breathed her last on February 24, 2018, in Dubai. (ANI)

'It was the name of my company': Poonam Dhillon recalls introducing Vanity vans to Bollywood
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 30 (ANI): Actor Poonam Dhillon, famed for films like 'Trishul', 'Kaala Pathar' and 'Dard' among others, is credited with introducing a game-changing concept to the Indian movie industry- the Vanity Vans. The makeup van or artiste trailer is now considered a stape of film shoots with most Bollywood celebrities flaunting the lavish vehicles that provide a space for actors to relax, change their costumes and do so much more within its confines. However, once these luxury rooms were a rarity, compelling actors to sometimes travel back to their hotel rooms from their sets just for a costume change! In an interview with ANI, the Poonam Dhillon opened up on she launched her own company, which provided spacious mobile dressing rooms for actors and how such vehicles that were outfitted with facilties like air conditioning, makeup room, and toilet, came to be named as 'Vanities'! "Vanity was the name of my company," said the 'Teri Meherbaniyan' actor, adding, "You have to name your company something. So one of my friends who was a journalist... it was a were makeup vans. So it was a pun on the word van and vanity because you're the dressing thing.." Dhillon detailed how her friend suggested the name. "Meri ek bahut achi dost is no more, unfortunately. She was the editor of Stardust at that time. So when I was planning my whole thing, I said, I need to name my company, suggest some Prochi (Badshah)suggested vanity, besides all the other names which we were working on, and I thought that was a very good name. And today it's become a generic name for what a make-up van is aayi ki idhar laga dena..I said that was my company name. You could say make-up van idhar laga dena. But today they are called vanities." "I would say that on the set is also where you're getting to know each other or chit-chatting or comradeship happens. And if you become comfortable, then you share lunches even in makeup vans.." On the work front, Dhillon is best known for her 1979 film 'Noorie'. She also worked in 'Red Rose', 'Dard' 'Romance' , 'Sohni Mahiwal', 'Teri Meherbaniyan', 'Samundar', 'Karma', 'Naam' and 'Maalamaal'. Poonam made a special appearance in 'Judaai'. She also made a mark on TV and was seen as a contestant on Season 3 of 'Bigg Boss' aired in 2009. The veteran actor played the lead role in the serial 'Ekk Nayi Pehchaan'. (ANI)

Poonam Dhillon recalls how Rishi Kapoor could sing sad songs with a smile
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 30 (ANI): Late actor Rishi Kapoor left for his heavenly abode on April 30, 2020, but he continues to live on in our hearts, memories and the pages of Indian cinema's history through his magnificent work and charming personality. In an interview with ANI, veteran actress Poonam Dhillon took a stroll down memory lane, recalling her collaboration with Rishi Kapoor on yesteryear's films. While looking back at her work with Rishi Kapoor, Poonam highlighted how "Chintu" (Rishi Kapoor's nickname) added special magic to film songs in his special ways. She shared, "I've learnt a lot from him (Rishi Kapoor). I think Rishi Kapoor was probably the only actor who could sing a sad song with a smile. And later, when I saw a lot of Raj Kapoor films, I found out that Raj uncle (Raj Kapoor) also used to (lip sync the songs similarly)...those were unhappy songs, but he would have a smile on his face and the tragedy was still there." "It wasn't as if you're smiling and it's a happy smile. It was a sad smile, you know. So Rishi Kapoor had that quality that he could make you feel absolutely emotional just by a look and the way he sang songs. He used to look so endearing when he would be singing songs," Poonam added. During the interview, Poonam also recalled the Kapoor family's warm hospitality, sharing a funny anecdote from her dining experience at Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor's house. "The whole unit used to be pampered by the Kapoors' food. I remember I did one film with RK Banner, I mean, we were more interested in knowing what's there for lunch than the shooting. Raj uncle would be there in his cottage. And we did a lot of shooting in the RK studio. Be it Raj uncle or Dabboo (Randhir Kapoor) or Chintu (Rishi Kapoor), they treated everyone to warm hospitality. Proper Punjabi khana...I don't think they would ever serve pizzas in their house," she quipped. "They make a lot of effort. I remember that after late evening, even their eating manners would change. So I remember going to Rishiji's house, Neetu had made a plate for him and me. And I'm saying, 'Neetu, don't put so much dal. I'm not going to eat so much dal.' Chintu says, 'don't worry, I'll take.' And with his hand, he's taken the dal and put it on his plate. I said, 'Chintu, what are you doing? Who takes dal with their hand?' But, you know, so they were like that. Very informal," Poonam reminisced. Poonam and Rishi Kapoor were a popular pair in the eighties. They had worked together in films such as Zamana, Biwi O Biwi, Ek Chadar Maili Si, and Yeh Vaada Raha.
