Thar coal, renewables make Sindh energy basket of Pakistan: CM Murad

KARACHI: With one of the largest indigenous coal reserves in Thar and significant renewable energy potential, Sindh is the energy basket of Pakistan and can lead national progress through its diverse energy sources.
Speaking at the Sindh Energy Diversity Conference organized by Energy Update in collaboration with the Government of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, Chief Minister Sindh, highlighted that Thar's coal deposits are equivalent to the energy reserves of Saudi Arabia, Iran and Kuwait.
Chief Minister Shah shared that the Thar coal project was initially conceived in the 1990s under the leadership of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and was eventually realized through one of the most successful public-private partnerships of Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) in Thar Block II. This pioneering initiative disproved the myth that Thar coal, being lower-grade lignite, cannot be used to produce electricity.
He added that Thar coal is now generating 1320MW of low-cost electricity in Block-II, powering households and industries across Pakistan. Moreover, an inclusive development approach has been followed, where almost every household in Thar Block-II is now solarized in line with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's vision that the people of Thar must benefit first from this progress.
Nasir Hussain Shah, Sindh Minister for Energy and Planning & Development, pointed out that coal gasification plans are underway to expand Thar coal utilization to other key sectors, such as fertilizer and cement, which will reduce pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Higher domestic production of fertilizers will help ensure an abundant and affordable supply of urea for farmers, ensuring greater food security for Pakistan.
The Sindh government remains focused on supporting industries and delivering solar home systems to underserved communities, Minister Nasir said.
Commending the Government of Sindh for its continued support, Amir Iqbal, CEO of SECMC, said that the Thar Block-II development served as a proof of concept and successfully marked six years of commercial operations on July 10 this year. He noted that 'SECMC supplies coal to three Independent Power Producers (IPPs), energizing over 3 million households and contributing to foreign exchange savings of around US$1.6 billion since inception. These plants consistently rank among the highest on the merit order, reaffirming Thar coal as the most cost-effective baseload fuel.'
Amir added that Phase-III mine expansion is underway to make coal even cheaper and add another 660 MW power plant based on Thar coal. He also highlighted SECMC's community investments of providing quality education to over 5000 students with 35% female enrolment, free healthcare access to more than 350,000 patients since inception, and support for the Government of Sindh's solarization efforts covering 3,150 households in Thar Block-II.

Nvidia to resume China chip sales amid shifting US export policy

Nvidia has confirmed it is filing applications to restart sales of its H20 artificial intelligence chips to China, following months of shifting US export rules. The move, confirmed through a blog post on Nvidia's website, comes after the Trump administration reversed restrictions imposed earlier this year, opening the door for resumed trade. The company expects to secure US government licences soon and begin deliveries shortly after. It has also announced a new chip, the 'RTX Pro,' designed specifically for the Chinese market and said to comply fully with current export regulations. Nvidia describes the chip as optimised for digital manufacturing, including logistics and smart factory systems. Though not its most advanced processor, the H20 is the most powerful chip Nvidia can legally sell to China under existing rules. Built for inference tasks (the operation of trained AI models) the chip is favoured for its superior memory bandwidth and seamless integration with Nvidia's established software ecosystem. The company's stock also skyrocketed, surging to a new record after the announcement was made. BREAKING: Nvidia stock, $NVDA, surges to a record $170/share in overnight trading after announcing H20 chip sales to China will resume. Nvidia also announces a fully compliant GPU for China. This company just keeps on evolving. — The Kobeissi Letter (@KobeissiLetter) July 15, 2025 Chinese technology firms including ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent had stockpiled the H20 in early 2025 amid fears of impending restrictions, according to GuruFocus. The chip's popularity, coupled with its performance, meant Nvidia stood to lose as much as $16 billion in revenue when the initial ban was enforced in April. The reversal came weeks after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang attended a $1 million-per-seat fundraising dinner at former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort. According to NPR, the White House softened its stance following Huang's commitment to invest heavily in US-based infrastructure. Nvidia subsequently announced a plan to build domestic AI data centres worth up to $500 billion over four years, in partnership with TSMC. Critics in Washington have questioned the consistency of US policy, warning that easing restrictions could erode efforts to limit China's AI capabilities. Concerns have grown following breakthroughs by Chinese startups like DeepSeek, which trained an advanced AI model earlier this year using Nvidia's H800 chips — a product banned since 2023 but still reportedly reaching China through alternative channels. In the blog post, Nvidia spokesperson Hector Marinez said Huang had been engaging with officials in both Washington and Beijing to highlight the benefits of AI for industry and society. The episode illustrates the competing pressures facing US policymakers as they navigate national security concerns and economic interests. With geopolitical tensions continuing to shape the tech landscape, further shifts in policy appear likely.

Punjab information minister steps up criticism of KP govt

LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Information and Culture, Azma Zahid Bokhari, has strongly responded to Barrister Saif's recent remarks, saying that the current state of affairs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa speaks for itself and needs no survey to expose the truth. She said, 'The harsh realities of KP are evident in the daily lives of its people. The latest Gallup survey is a resounding slap on the face of the so-called 12-year 'fake change' in KP. The same people who once celebrated Gallup surveys are now unable to digest the bitter truth about their government.' Citing the survey, Bokhari stated that 73% of the people of KP have expressed a lack of confidence in the current government, particularly in the leadership of Ali Amin Gandapur, while 71% demand transparent investigations into alleged corruption in mega projects. She further remarked that even PTI's voters have acknowledged that development funds in KP have been swallowed by corruption. 'Ali Amin Gandapur has now emerged as the de facto Chairman of the Loot Association,' she quipped. 'Ironically, his cabinet members, while travelling on GT Road, have themselves witnessed the progress and prosperity unfolding in Punjab.' Highlighting Punjab's governance, Azma Bokhari praised Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, stating that she has established a practical model of merit, transparency, and good governance in the province. 'Every small and large project in Punjab is being completed with complete transparency, and no one can raise a finger on Maryam Nawaz's development agenda,' she said.
