BELLY fat increases your risk of the skin condition psoriasis, a study warns.
Psoriasis, which affects one in 50 people - including reality TV star Kim Kardashian - causes scaly patches of skin usually around the scalp, knees and elbows.

The 44-year-old has previously opened up about her struggle with the condition she described as 'painful'.
Model Cara Delevingne and singer Cyndi Lauper are also sufferers.
Researchers at King's College London analysed data from over 330,000 Brits, including more than 9,000 people with psoriasis.
They found that abdominal fat was strongly linked to someone's likelihood of having the condition, particularly for women.

Study author Dr Ravi Ramessur said: 'Our research shows that where fat is stored in the body matters when it comes to psoriasis risk.
'Central fat, especially around the waist, seems to play a key role.
'This has important implications for how we identify individuals who may be more likely to develop psoriasis or experience more severe disease, and how we approach prevention and treatment strategies.'
Psoriasis typically begins in someone's 20s or 50s.
It's not known what causes the incurable, and therefore chronic, condition.

It is thought that a problem with the immune system causes the skin cells to replace faster than they should. It is therefore sometimes referred to as an autoimmune disorder.
Dr Ramessur says: "The observed links between central body fat and psoriasis suggest that there may be underlying biological mechanisms contributing to the disease that are not yet fully understood and which warrant further investigation."

In light of the new findings, experts said Ozempic-style fat jabs, such as Wegovy and Mounjaro, also known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, may help people with psoriasis.
Dr Joel Gelfand, Department of Dermatology and Center for Clinical Sciences in Dermatology, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, wrote in an accompanying editorial: 'The strong relationship between psoriasis and obesity, and the emerging promise of GLP-1 RAs, is a call to action for clinical trials.'
Dr Catherine Smith, senior author, said: 'As rates of obesity continue to rise globally, understanding how different patterns of body fat influence chronic inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis is important."
How to get rid of belly fat
Most of us have tried to shift belly fat at some point - it can be stubborn and takes some hard work.
Personal trainer Lucy Gornall previously shared with The Sun her non-negotiables if your goal is to lose the extra chub around your middle.
These include:
1. Fill your plate with as many coloured fruits and vegetables as you can.
"These are the fruits and vegetables which pack in nutrients and fibre, but contain very few calories," Lucy says.
Fibre fills you up and therefore prevents overeating.
2. Don't overdo the cardio.
"Going hard on runs, cycles and other types of cardio, is NOT the best way to burn belly fat," says Lucy.
"It will leave you tired (you'll be turning to high sugar snacks for energy), it will leave you sore, and it will leave you very hungry."
3. Instead, lift weights.
"More muscle means more calories burnt at rest, meaning you burn off the food you eat easier than if you had less muscle," says Lucy.
"Aim to include three 30 to 45 minute resistance-based training sessions each week, ensuring that the weight is challenging and your form is correct."
4. Eat protein
Protein is the most filling food you can eat (over carbohydrates and fats) and helps with muscle recovery from all that weight training you'll be doing.
"Look to include a source of protein in every meal and you won't go too far wrong," says Lucy, noting chicken breast and lean turkey mince are good sources.
5. Move more generally.
Increase your NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) by doing things like taking the stairs over the lift and walking home from an earlier train or tube station.

Demi's life turned upside down in 2021, when doctors discovered she had thyroid cancer only a year after she starred on Love Island Demi Jones has spoken out about the main symptoms of thyroid cancer, four years after her own battle with the disease. The Love Islander's life turned upside down in 2021 when doctors found a cancerous lump in her neck. After two major surgeries and radioiodine therapy, Demi was fortunately given the all-clear that same year in December. Still, she reflected on the shock of discovering she had cancer after initially dismissing the malignant lump for some time. "I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer age 22, and this is my story," she said in a fresh Instagram post with beauty retailer, Boots. "Thyroid cancer is when abnormal cells in the thyroid gland start to divide and grow in an uncontrolled way. "Symptoms of thyroid cancer include hoarseness of the voice, a sore throat, difficulty swallowing and a lump. But, for me personally, I just had a lump on the side of my neck. I first discovered my lump back in 2019 when I was at uni, but I was too busy having fun. "I didn't take it seriously enough. It wasn't until I had messages from strangers and my followers telling me that they could see this lump on my neck, it was that [which] then pushed me to get a doctor's appointment." Demi, 27, explained that doctors initially performed an ultrasound and a blood test before draining some of the lump's fluid. Two weeks later, she was then called back and urged to go for surgery 'almost immediately'. "At this point, I felt really uncertain. I went straight into surgery where they removed half of my thyroid and the lump to test if it was cancerous," she continued. "A couple of weeks later, the doctor called me in. As soon as they said the word 'cancer', I just went into shock. So, I then had to go back in for a second surgery where they removed the rest of my thyroid." Although it's now been four years since Demi's cancer battle, the star said she continues to wear her scar 'very proudly' and is still keen to raise awareness of the disease. In a final plea to fans, she urged: "If you think you have any symptoms of thyroid cancer, please speak to your GP." Other symptoms of thyroid cancer Besides the three key red flags outlined by Demi, the NHS also acknowledges several other common symptoms of thyroid cancer. These may include: Difficulty swallowing or breathing Pain in the front of the neck/feeling like something is pushing against it Red face/flushing Softer poos or diarrhoea Weight loss Persistent coughing However, current guidance warns: "These symptoms are very common and can be caused by many different conditions. Having them does not definitely mean you have thyroid cancer. But it's important to get them checked by a GP. "This is because if they're caused by cancer, finding it early may mean it's easier to treat."

Experts identify speech pattern that could hint at cognitive decline

They then analysed the recordings using AI, to look details such as the speed of talking, the duration of pauses between words and the range of words used. The participants also had to complete tests to measure their concentration, thinking speed and their ability to plan and carry out tasks (Picture: Getty) The researchers also used a picture-word interference task, designed to separate the two steps to name an object – finding the right word and instructing the mouth on how to say it. The participants were shown pictures of everyday objects while the researchers played an audio clip of a word either related in meaning or which sounds similar (Picture: Getty) They found that the natural speech speed of older adults was related to their quickness in naming pictures. They say that this could indicate a general slowdown in processing could couple with broader cognitive and linguistic changes with age, rather than a specific issue of recalling words.
