A British-Australian engineer, Henry Deane was responsible for converting Sydney's original horse-drawn and steam-powered trams to electric power in the 1890s. It's also the name of the classy cocktail lounge perched above the Millers Point pub, Hotel Palisade – named in honour of Deane's whopping big contribution to Sydney. You can really appreciate the beauty of our Harbour City from the top floor of this rooftop bar. It's got the kind of views that make you feel proud as punch to live here – spanning the Harbour Bridge, city skyline, the beginnings of the Parramatta River and even Barangaroo below. And while Mr Deane lives on in the history books, we reckon this would've been one of his favourite spots for a cold one, too.

This year, the swish cocktail bar turns ten – and to celebrate, the team has launched a fresh food and cocktail menu, complete with Vegemite-laced tipples.
Classic cocktails are available – and they're done well, too. But why not try the Miss Marshie – made with Ketel One vodka, toasted marshmallow, fizz and pineapple foam – it's fancy and a little bit sweet. For something that tastes like a holiday, go for the Circa 1915, featuring Hotel Palisade Portside gin, coconut, mandarin and makrut lime. Feeling brave? Try the Home Slice, a grown-up riff on an Aussie breakfast staple, made with sourdough bread-soaked vodka, verjuice, charcoal-activated vanilla syrup and Vegemite. It's subtle, elegant and well-balanced.
The share-style food menu changes with the seasons – but you can always count on it complementing the cocktails. Kick things off with a finger-like golden potato hash topped with a squiggle of abalone sauce and finished with smoked pork dust. Fresh chopped prawns come with a butter bean dip, fermented honey and a hint of chilli; and marinated grilled chicken is paired with a punchy green sauce and preserved lemon.
Next time you've got a friend visiting from Melbourne, or you wanna score a brownie point or two on a first date, head up to the rooftop and order a cocktail at Henry Deane. Promise they're anything but watery.

WHEN I decided to move to Portugal in 2020, I had been living in London - one of the most pricey cities in the world, let alone the UK - for just under a decade. However, I was amazed by how costs in my new base, Lisbon, were less than I had experienced even in many parts of the UK, making it an overall more affordable place to live. 5 5 From dining out to getting around, I have been amazed how my money has been able to go further compared to back home. Having said that, rising costs have affected Portugal, like they have in other parts of Europe in the past few years - and it's worth noting that the minimum wage here is significantly lower than the UK. There has been particular resentment among locals about soaring rents and house prices, believed to be driven by expats and tourists. However, the prices of many everyday things has remained rather affordable - as I'm reminded every time I pop back to the UK - and these are some of the impressive savings that can be made... Booze for less than a fiver Just like us Brits, the Portuguese are passionate about their beer - namely Super Bock, produced in the north, and Sagres, which comes from the south. A bottle of the lager-style duo - which is slightly smaller than a British pint - will often cost just a couple of euros each. Another alcoholic beverage prevalent in Portugal is wine, and the country has many delicious varieties that are low in price for the very reason they are home-grown. At many bars, restaurants and quiosques, you can still purchase a top-quality house white or red for just a few euros. Coffee for a quid The Portuguese love of coffee is strong, to the point where most homes will have an espresso machine in the kitchen and seeing a packet of the instant stuff is rare. However, when they are getting their caffeine fix in a traditional café, you'll usually see locals stood up at the counter quickly sipping on an espresso. Explore Algarve with The Sun's Best of Beaches It will probably have set them back between 50 and 80 cents, although that might tip over the one euro mark (around 80p) if you sit down at a table. If an espresso is not to your taste, then coffee with milk - called a 'galão' - will usually come in at under two euros. Affordable beach luxury While other European coastal destinations might charge you a small fortune to enjoy the finer aspects of beach life, in Portugal it is comparatively cheap. Many sandy spots will have traditional cafés selling competitively priced seafood - usually fresh and caught locally. 5 It is also possible to rent a sunlounger at the beach for less than a tenner, based on two people sharing a pair of beds with an umbrella for shade. Surfing your thing? Portugal has some of the best waves in Europe, and you can rent a surfboard and wetsuit in many places for less than €20 (£17) a day. Dining out for less Portugal is famed for its delicious food, which include authentic just-out-the-oven pastel de nata for a couple of euros. However, it's going to a restaurant for lunch or dinner where the savings really become apparent. 5 The typical Portuguese way to dine is to share several dishes in a group in the style of 'petiscos' - their version of tapas - which makes dining out for £10 to £20, minus drinks, a regular occurrence. When you receive the bill, it's common for there to be no 12.5 per cent service charge automatically added to the total - so it's at your discretion, and very much appreciated by staff, if you do want to tip. Cheaper to get around Many Portuguese locals choose to get from A to B in cars or on motorbikes. However, taking public transport can allow you to better enjoy the scenery - and it will save you a fortune too. A ride on a regional train service - such as from the 40 minutes from Lisbon to Caiscais - will set you back only a couple of euros. Meanwhile, the monthly 'Navegante' travel pass gives you unlimited use of public transport - including the famous trams - in the capital area for less than £30 per month.

The government brought in tough new rules earlier this year to tackle an outbreak of a serious disease spreading across Europe. This means that anyone coming back from affected regions including Spain, France, Italy and Greece must make sure they don't have any forbidden items in their luggage. It continues to be banned for visitors from all EU countries entering Great Britain to bring items such as sandwiches, cheese, cured meats, raw meats or milk into the country, reports Bristol Live. This applies regardless of whether the products are wrapped or packaged, or whether they were bought at duty-free shops. Officials said that those found with these products will be required to either surrender them at the border or have them seized and destroyed. "In serious cases, those found with these items run the risk of incurring fines of up to £5,000 in England." The Government has put measures in place to prevent the spread of foot and mouth disease (FMD) following a rising number of cases throughout Europe. In a bid to safeguard the health of British livestock, the livelihoods of farmers, and the nation's food security, travellers are now barred from bringing in meat from cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs, as well as dairy products, from EU countries into Great Britain for personal use. While Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) poses no threat to humans, it is a highly infectious viral disease that affects cattle, sheep, pigs, and other cloven-hoofed animals such as wild boar, deer, llamas, and alpacas. Despite there being no current cases in the UK, the outbreak on the continent presents a significant risk to farm businesses and livestock. The disease can lead to substantial economic losses due to decreased productivity in affected animals, as well as loss of access to international markets for animals, meat, and dairy. In light of confirmed FMD outbreaks in Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria earlier this year, the Government has already prohibited personal imports of meat from cattle, sheep, and other ruminants, as well as pig meat and dairy products from these countries. These new restrictions apply solely to travellers arriving in Great Britain, with no imposition on personal imports arriving from Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man. Farming Minister Daniel Zeichner, at the time of the launch, stated: "This government will do whatever it takes to protect British farmers from foot and mouth. That is why we are further strengthening protections by introducing restrictions on personal meat and dairy imports to prevent the spread of the disease and protect Britain's food Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer for international and trade affairs Dr Jorge Martin-Almagro said: ". This biosecurity measure combined with all others we have implemented are critical to limit the risk of FMD incursion. I would urge livestock keepers to continue exercising the upmost vigilance for signs of disease, ensure scrupulous biosecurity is maintained and to report any suspicion of disease immediately to the Animal and Plant Health Agency." However, there are still certain exemptions to these regulations. Small quantities of baby formula, medicinal foods and specific composite items such as chocolate, sweets, bread, cakes, biscuits and pasta are still permitted.

The 31-year-old was out for an early morning walk along the coast when the tide was out, when he spotted what he calls 'danger pancakes' blending into the sand. ‌ 'Jellyfish are already dead by the time you find one. They're 95% water and dehydrate within minutes of washing ashore. They're basically a digestive system with some tentacles. They don't have a brain. But they can still sting. Seeing the jellyfish and their sizes really surprised me," he said. The arrival of the jellyfish comes as locals in Spain grapple with a giant rat invasion of their beach. ‌ Joel said he didn't even spot the larger ones at first because he thought they were rocks. The beachgoer seems to have stumbled across several different types of jellyfish. The species with straight lines running from its peak down to its edge appears to be a compass jellyfish. "With brown markings reminiscent of a compass, this jellyfish is really quite distinctive. A summer visitor to our shores, the compass jellyfish feeds on small fish, crabs and even other jellyfish. They give a nasty sting, so if you spot them during a visit to the beach – look, but don't touch! Once they have stung something, jellyfish often leave the tentacle behind and can continue to sting using it even when not connected to their body," the Wildlife Trust explains. ‌ The purple jellyfish, on the other hand, seem to be either blue jellyfish or mauve stingers. "This beautiful jellyfish is often seen around the UK coastline in summer and autumn. They are attracted inshore by blooms of plankton that provide a plentiful supply of food. The blue jellyfish can drift along, easily capturing prey with its dense array of stinging tentacles," the Wildlife Trust continues. ‌ If it turns out to be a mauve stinger, then paddlers may be wise to watch out a little more carefully. "The mauve stinger is a small jellyfish, but it certainly packs a powerful punch, with long tentacles and warty structures on its 'bell' full of stinging cells. Small crustaceans known as amphipods hang out inside the ring of tentacles and are able to survive unharmed. The mauve stinger likes to feed on other small jellyfish and oceanic sea squirts, also known as ascidians," the Wildlife Trust adds. The third, translucent species may well be a moon jellyfish. These are typically found throughout the world's oceans and are around the size of a plate. They are recognisable by the four circles visible through the translucent white bell. After sharing pictures of his find online, Joel sparked a flurry of amazed commentary. One user joked: 'Free hats.' Another added: 'Jellyfish are so unsettling, as are mushrooms. I'm convinced they both must have arrived on a meteor or something.' One person said: 'In my experience, Wales is crazy for jellyfish.' Another commenter wrote: 'Christ, I didn't realise we had jellyfish in the UK and that they can be so big and stingy! Adding this to the list of reasons I'm scared of the sea.'
