Dusty winds subside as weather improves in Greater Cairo and northern Egypt - Society

Al-Ahram Weekly30-04-2025

The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) announced Wednesday a noticeable decrease in wind intensity and airborne dust over Greater Cairo and the northern regions of Egypt, bringing the first signs of weather improvement after turbulent conditions.
The Khamasin storm, which had swept across large parts of the country carrying strong winds and dust, is now gradually shifting eastward towards Sinai, according to the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA).
However, northern Upper Egypt, including governorates such as Asyut, Minya, and Beni Suef, remains under the influence of stirred-up dust and sand despite the situation easing later in the day compared to earlier.
According to the EMA, the dust storm impacted several areas, particularly in the south and along major routes such as the Suez Road.
Media reports indicated that Helwan and 6 October City, which experienced strong winds and reduced visibility, were among the areas most affected by the storm, unlike many districts in Cairo, where conditions remained relatively calm.
The EMA had issued prior warnings, urging citizens to remain indoors and avoid travel unless necessary.
In response, the Ministry of Education and Technical Education announced the closure of all schools across the country on Wednesday in anticipation of the severe weather brought by the storm.
The recent storm forms part of the seasonal Khamasin phenomenon, which typically brings dry, dusty winds from the desert, especially during the spring.
Further improvements in weather conditions are expected on Thursday, with clearer skies anticipated across more regions.

Heatwave continues across Egypt on Sunday

A member of the Egyptian Meteorological Authority's (EMA) media center, Manar Ghanem, said that the country is currently experiencing a rise in temperatures of two degrees Celsius above the normal average for this time of year. During a phone interview with TV host Amr Adib on the 'al-Hekaya' (The Story) on MBC Masr on Saturday, Ghanem added that the current perceived temperature in Cairo on Sunday is 40C. She explained that the extension of the Indian monsoon low is the main reason behind this heatwave, in addition to the continued high humidity levels further increasing the feeling of heat. Maximum temperatures will record a slight drop on Monday, reaching 36C in Cairo, she added, with very hot weather continuing, especially in the inland governorates. Coastal areas meanwhile will see a relative drop in temperatures due to the influence of the sea. The expert noted that humidity levels will rise significantly during the night, increasing the feeling of heat, especially in enclosed and poorly ventilated spaces. Ghanem warned against direct exposure to the sun during the midday hours, especially between 12 pm and three pm, stressing the importance of wearing hats and sunglasses, and keeping well-hydrated. Heatwave strikes Egypt on Saturday as Indian monsoon depression arrives

The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) warned of rising temperatures expected over the next 72 hours. The EMA explained that the country is currently being impacted by Indian monsoon depression, which it said is the main cause behind the high humidity during most summer days in Egypt, the Gulf states, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Levant. It advised avoiding direct exposure to the sun, especially during the afternoon. When going out, it further advised to wear a head covering to protect from the sun's rays and to avoid standing in the sun for long periods. The EMA anticipates Saturday's weather to be very hot and humid across most parts of the country during the day, with moderate temperatures on the northern coasts. The weather will be relatively hot at night and in the early morning. The authority noted that winds will be intermittently active in parts of the western part of the country with expected increases in humidity levels, causing temperatures to rise slightly compared to last week.
