Pakistan's Imam-ul-Haq replaces Ruturaj Gaikwad at Yorkshire for County Championship
The development follows after Gaikwad backed out of the County deal that he had signed up for with the club last month. The Chennai Super Kings captain was due to appear for his debut on Tuesday, but has now opted out of the deal due to personal reasons.
'Unfortunately, Gaikwad's not coming now for personal reasons,' said Yorkshire head coach Anthony McGrath. 'We're not going to have him for Scarborough or for the rest of the season. So that's disappointing. I can't tell you anything about the reasons why, but we hope that everything's ok.'
Imam has previously represented Somerset in the County Championship in 2022. He will join the Yorkshire squad ahead of its clash with Surrey at Scarborough.
'We're delighted that Imam has joined us and that he will be available immediately,' Gavin Hamilton, Yorkshire's general manager of cricket, said on Monday. 'Whilst we were naturally disappointed that Ruturaj couldn't join up with the squad, in Imam, we have an exceptional player of proven international quality.
Earlier, Yorkshire went into panic mode after Gaikwad's last-minute decision.
'We've literally just found out. We're working behind the scenes on what we can do. But it's only two or three days away, so I'm not sure what we can do at the moment. We're working to try and get a possible replacement, but time pressure is the issue. I can't give you anything more than that at the moment,' McGrath had said on Saturday.
The Maharashtra batter had been out of action since April 8 after suffering a fractured elbow while leading Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2025 season. Recovering from the injury, Gaikwad was named in the India A squad for the England tour. However, he was benched for both matches against the England Lions.
Despite his impressive white-ball aggregates, Gaikwad has not had the best of runs in First-Class cricket, averaging 41.77 for 2632 runs in 38 matches. Gaikwad had a torrid run during the India A tour to Australia last year, scoring only 20 runs in four outings.
In the 2024-25 domestic season in India, Gaikwad tallied 571 runs in 12 innings with a solitary century.

Women's Premier League: Abhishek Nayar, ex-India assistant coach, takes charge of UP Warriorz
Abhishek Nayar speaks to his players during an India Men's Test Squad training session in December 2024 in Australia (Photo by) Mumbai : UP Warriorz (UPW) on Friday appointed former India allrounder Abhishek Nayar as their head coach for the upcoming season of the Women's Premier League (WPL). Nayar's appointment comes after the franchise parted ways with their former head coach Jon Lewis, who was at the helm for the last three seasons. A seasoned coach, Nayar has been the assistant coach of the Indian team and is currently also the assistant coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders. He was the assistant coach of KKR when they clinched their third IPL title in 2024. A stalwart of Mumbai cricket who scored 5749 runs and took 173 wickets in 103 first-class matches between 2005-18, Nayar played three ODIs for India in 2009. After his retirement in 2019, the 41-year-old has taken up various roles into coaching and has also mentored and guided several top cricketers like India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik. While Rohit credited him for his return to form in IPL 2025, Karthik praised him for his T20 resurgence, which enabled him to make an India comeback. Rahul seeks out Nayar for batting sessions around grounds in Mumbai. He was the head coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders academy in 2018 and then joined the KKR support staff as assistant coach. He was also the Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) head coach in CPL in 2022. In July 2024, Nayar joined Team India as assistant coach, but had to quit less than a year into the job. He was subsequently immediately recruited by KKR as their assistant coach for IPL 2025, having played the same role from 2018 to 2024 and also run the KKR academy. Nayar was also the mentor of Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals, the winners of T20 Mumbai League this year. Talking about Nayar's appointment, Kshemal Waingankar, COO and director of cricket UPW, told TOI, "Bringing Abhishek Nayar on board as head coach feels like a natural and exciting step forward for the UP Warriorz. When someone of Abhishek's calibre became available, it was a no-brainer. Few in Indian cricket bring the same depth of experience when it comes to shaping players and shaping winning cultures. He's played a pivotal role in the journeys of the likes of Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik, and KL Rahul, as well as promising young talents like Angkrish Raghuvanshi. In just the past 18 months alone, Abhishek has been part of three championship-winning campaigns—each in a different role, each leaving a lasting impact." "We're thrilled to have him lead a Warriorz side that's united, fearless, and hungry to grow. With Abhishek at the helm, we believe this group can do something truly special," he added. This is the first time that Nayar will take charge of a women's team, though he conducted a week-long off-season camp with UPW in August 2023 in Bengaluru. Poll Do you think Abhishek Nayar will be able to lead UP Warriorz to their first WPL title? Yes, definitely Maybe, it depends on the team's performance UPW are yet to win the WPL title-a wait that they will hope Nayar helps them end. The Lucknow-based side made it to the playoffs in the inaugural season in 2023, where they lost to eventual champions Mumbai Indians in the eliminator. However, they ended up at the second last and last of the five teams in the WPL in 2024 and 2025 respectively. UPW were led by India's ace allrounder Deepti Sharma in WPL 2025, after Australian captain Alyssa Healy was ruled out of the tournament due to injury. Joe Root Creates History, Becomes First Player In The World To...
Root, who is England's leading run getter in Test cricket, completes 1000 Test runs at Old Trafford. He is the first batter in the world to score 1000 Test runs in Manchester. Joe Root is arguably England's best batter of all time, and on Friday (July 25), during the third day's play of the ongoing fourth India-England Test at Old Trafford in Manchester, he entered his name in the history books by becoming the first cricketer in the world to score 1000 Test runs at Old Trafford. The fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy is Root's 12th red-ball match in Manchester. Root needed 22 runs to join the 1000-run club, and he achieved the objective during the 53rd over of England's first innings bowled by Jasprit Bumrah. Most Test runs in Manchester Root has one century and seven half-centuries to his name in 12 Test matches played so far at Old Trafford, and the right-handed batter from Yorkshire would like to come up with another big show. If Root, who tops the ICC Test batter's rankings, manages to score at least 31 runs in the first innings, then he will overtake Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis and become third highest run getter in Test cricket. Dravid finished his Test career with 13,288 runs and Kallis amassed a total of 13,289 runs. The overall record of scoring the most runs in Test cricket is in the name of Sachin Tendulkar. The legendary right-handed batter played 200 red-ball matches for India from 1989 to 2013 and scored 15,921 runs. Australia's Ricky Ponting is in 2nd place with 13,378 runs to his credit. Root needs to score at least 120 runs in the Manchester Test to break Ponting's record and become the second leading run getter in the five-day format of the game. Apart from closing the gap with Tendulkar in the list of batters with the most runs in Test cricket, Root will also have the chance to equal Tendulkar's record of scoring the most 50s in Test cricket. Tendulkar finished his career with 68 fifties, whereas Root, who is playing his 157th Test for England these days, has 66 half-centuries to his credit. If Root manages to score a century in the fourth Test, then he will become the first player in the world to score 12 Test centuries against India. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 16:02 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
