Pandemonium in Bristol with record-breaking 10 tries in first half
Sets were being adjusted, punters were chaotically checking that it was not April 1, but in the end the Bears prevailed, consolidating a top-two spot in the Premiership table. Does anyone know of any cool, dark rooms in Bristol? I need a lie down.
There are days when defence coaches watch from behind the sofa and then there was this. Ninety points in total and 14 tries, nine of which came inside the first half an hour – bonus points sewn up for both teams too – with five-point scores reducing in value as rapidly as Deutsch Marks in the Weimar Republic. Tackling was not optional; it became kryptonite. Ellis Genge, dropping out of the Bristol 23 on the morning of the match to welcome the birth of his daughter, his third child, must have been sitting at home wondering what on Earth was unfolding in his absence.

After the carnage between these two at Sandy Park last October – Bristol scored 28 points in the final 14 minutes to overturn a 20-point deficit – this sort of carry-on was written in the stars. The aggregate score between the two sides this season now reads an extraordinary 92-73 to Bristol.
The Bears, staggeringly, had their own try bonus point wrapped up in 15 minutes. It took slowcoaches Exeter a further 14 to secure their bonus. Keep up, lads. In the thick of Bristol bedlam, picking out shining lights was tough but Benhard Janse van Rensburg and James Williams in the midfield looked a cut above.
The madness began when Christ Tshiunza dropped the kick-off. From then, it took Bristol less than 90 seconds to get the ball on the try-line, the efficiency of which set the tone for the afternoon. Kalaveti Ravouvou caused the Chiefs problems down the left and when the ball was recycled, Jack Bates was there to dot down.

Tom Cairns's sumptuous timing of the pass sent Martin Moloney through close to a Bristol ruck as Exeter responded, but Joe Owens caught the ensuing restart and Williams was under the sticks in the blink of an eye.

Again, Exeter replied. Ben Coen, fresh out of a leading role with England's under-20s during their own Six Nations, found Josh Hodge with a cross-field kick and the wing offloaded neatly for Henry Slade to score.
It was already silly, but following Slade's score, Janse van Rensburg caught Bristol's own restart and scooted away untouched for a try of his own. Bristol had their lead back and when Williams added a second after more good work from Ravouvou and Viliame Mata, that was the Bears' bonus point secured with, astonishingly, just over a quarter of an hour played.
This is unbelievable 😮

Exeter, after their Premiership Rugby Cup final defeat to Bath last Sunday, played their part in a spectacle with which the Chiefs might not have been traditionally associated. Paul Brown-Bampoe came close before Dafydd Jenkins, the Wales lock, muscled over from close range. In the build-up, Mata marmelised Slade (legally) with one of the hits of the season but moments later Santiago Grondona got it very wrong on Martin Moloney (illegally), with a clumsy head-on-head tackle. Grondona correctly saw red in what was a routine call for referee Karl Dickson.

By the time that Bristol were reduced to 14 – wing Ravouvou was also sacrificed for Steven Luatua to mitigate the back-row loss – Exeter had cut the deficit to nine thanks to an impressive solo try from Hodge cancelling out Bates's second. Hodge's scoring pass, fired by Coen, looked a metre forward but it would not really have been in the spirit of things to have called it back, would it?
Randall darted from the base to score the 10th try of the first half and give the Bears a 16-point half-time cushion after the wackiest half in this – or, probably, any – Premiership season.
Ten first-half tries, what is happening here?!

Luatua crossed for Bristol's seventh before Bates sealed his hat-trick in his 50th game for the club; the Bears' third score with no reply while down to 14 players. Jack Yeandle and Will Rigg addressed Exeter's second-half try drought late on but Bristol make merry in the madness and were always going to hold their nutty nerve.
The red card hasn't dampened @BristolBears ' attacking intent.

Russell Martin reveals John Beaton apologised for Rangers handball decision and Ibrox boss met it with sorry of his own
Martin said it was all amicable between himself and the whistler despite being sent to the stand Russell Martin apologised to John Beaton after being sent off in the friendly draw with Middlesbrough - but insists he's no fears over a touchline ban ahead of the Premiership kick-off. Rangers warmed up for Wednesday's Champions League crunch with Panathinaikos by fighting back for a 2-2 draw with the Championship side. But the match was overshadowed by the new boss being ordered to the stands by Beaton for taking his protests over the non-award of a spot kick too far. Martin admits he overstepped the mark as he was forced to watch his side's second half fight back to draw 2-2 from the stands and revealed Beaton also apologised to him over the incident that saw Luke Ayling escape a handball in his own box. The Ibrox boss admits he'll need to get used to how Scottish football works to avoid any more run-ins with officials. But Martin - who admitted he faces a couple of big selection of headaches ahead of Wednesday night - insists he is not sweating over a ban. He said: 'Me, after that? No, I don't think so, no. I'd be surprised. 'We shook hands and had a chat after and they accepted my apology and he apologised about the decision as well. So, yeah, hopefully it's all just done and dusted. 'It's probably just frustration at a bit of the performance as well in the first half, because I can always accept if the intensity is there, the courage is there, and we're not quite there tactically, we need to fix a few things. But I didn't like the energy or the body language of too many on the pitch in the first 20, 25 minutes. 'Then I think we should have had a penalty. 'We should have had a fourth official, who would definitely help the officials. And then I'm a passionate guy and I probably overstepped the mark. And then I enjoyed watching the game in the stand the second half. It was a good view! 'I hope not to spend too long up there. But no, seriously, I went and apologised to the official and I need to get used to how it works up here compared to down the road as well. 'I've apologised and hopefully we can we can all move on. I got a good view of the game and he got peace and quiet for 45 minutes.' Summer signing Thelo Aasgaard again sat out as he nurses a niggle while Hamza Igamane was also missing from the match day squad after picking up a knock in Tuesday's 2-0 first leg victory over the Greeks. And Martin said: 'I think we're always open to surprise and change, but we have a couple of big decisions to make on Wednesday. It will depend on the fitness of people as well and how people are. So yeah, we will wait and see. 'Hamza picked up a little injury on Tuesday night. He missed a lot of pre-season, and he's been really trying hard to catch up fitness wise. 'He's got himself to a good place and then the other night, the intensity of the game coming on to that is not easy, but he's not going to be out for a long time. He's a big, strong boy and we hope to have him back on Wednesday night. It would have been madness to risk him today, really. "Thelo's the same as Hamza. We could have rushed both back to try and be involved today, but I think the our eyes are on Wednesday right now. And so with Thelo, he's recovering really well, he's athletically really, really good. But we'll just have to wait and see.' Robin Propper completed his move back to FC Twente hours before the game. And Martin insists others will soon follow as he streamlines his bloated squad in a bid to add further fresh faces. Ridvan Yilmaz has been linked with a move back to Besiktas while Jose Cifuentes, Ben Davies and Rabbi Matondo remain out the picture. Martin said: 'Yeah, I think they have to. Robin goes with everyone's best wishes. So the way he's dealt with being told he's not going to be part of things, training separately from the group with a few others, he's been incredible. "I think we have interest in a fair few of the players, but as and when they go, I don't know. 'Whilst they're here, they'll be treated with care and respect and professionalism. And it might not always be on the terms they want or like, but I think if we're honest with each other and we respect each other and they respect the group, there's not going to be a problem."

Lennon Miller transfer latest as appearance vs Rangers 'not ruled out' with Serie A duo primed amid £5m demand
Miller is hot property and Udinese and Bologna are taking a keen interest but no fresh bids have arrived Udinese and Bologna are yet to make the first move in the summer race for Lennon Miller. The Serie A rivals are both keen on Well's £5m-rated teen ace. But neither has yet submitted a bid this window - and manager Jens Berthel Askou could hand the playmaker a first appearance of the season in the Premiership opener against Rangers next Saturday. Miller has sat out the four Premier Sports Cup group games so far and again wasn't involved in Friday's friendly draw with Hertha Berlin at Fir Park. And Askou said: 'I don't expect his situation to be resolved in the next few days. 'There's nothing new on Lennon Miller so right now he's still our player and he's back in little bit of training and I look forward to seeing him on Monday. 'There is a possibility of him playing against Rangers but again we will have to get some answers next week. It's not ruled out.' Miller has entered the final year of his contract in Lanarkshire and Well are demanding a record fee for the academy product. Udinese had a £2.5m bid rejected in January but are weighing up a fresh offer. Bologna too are long term admirers of the midfielder who made his Scotland debut in last month's friendly double header against Iceland and Luxembourg. Celtic too have been keeping tabs on the 18-year-old while there's been interest in Germany and England. But so far no fresh offers have been tabled this window. Miller's dad Lee, the former Aberdeen, Hearts and Falkirk striker, admitted last month that a move abroad was his son's preferred option. Coppa Italia champions Bologna, captained by Miller's Scotland team mate Lewis Ferguson, return to competitive action on August 23 with a Serie A opener away to Roma. Udinese, who finished 12th last season, are back in action five days earlier in a Coppa Italia first round meeting with Carrarese.
