Mattel's ‘Jurassic Park' SDCC Exclusive Is a Goofy Love Letter to Comic Cons
The shot of the T. Rex bringing down the 'When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth' banner is one of the most legendary in all of Jurassic Park, a moment that defines the franchise. Now, Mattel is putting a suitably goofy spin on it for an amazing exclusive at this year's San Diego Comic-Con.
This morning Mattel revealed the crowning glory of its batch of exclusives for SDCC this year: the Hammond Collection T. Rex Convention Crasher set, which takes the T. Rex's banner-crashing moment and transposes it out of Jurassic Park… and into a comic convention.
The set itself comes with, of course, a T. Rex—inspired by the appearance of Buck the T. Rex in The Lost World, who infamously rampaged through San Diego itself in the climax of the film. But it also comes with a human figure to menace in the form of a convention staple at this point: someone dressed in an inflatable T. Rex costume! The human figure includes swappable face to depict either a male or female con-goer, as well as a giant convention swag bag to hoist on their back. The bag even houses some removable swag, including a figure-scaled box of the T. Rex Convention Crasher set itself! Very meta.
Buck himself doesn't really need any accessories as a T. Rex, save for one important one: a fabric 'When Fans Ruled the Earth' banner to drape down over him in the chaos. If that wasn't enough, even the packaging itself is a fun twist: a sleeve for the set showcases Buck's rampage in San Diego from The Lost World, but once that's removed, the packaging itself is designed to look like it's a ruined version of the San Diego Convention Center's exterior, revealing a Jurassic Park con within that Buck has laid waste to.
The Hammond Collection T. Rex Convention Crasher set will cost $85, and will be available at Mattel's booth at SDCC when the convention begins July 24. Select items from Mattel's SDCC offerings this year will also be available to order online from the Mattel Creations website on the same date.

Debuting the character on Season 3 of Sex and the City in 2000, Trey is a cardiologist who is seemingly Charlotte's perfect match, quickly getting married and starting their life together on the Upper East Side. But their marriage soon starts to unravel due to Trey's erectile dysfunction, his overbearing mother's surprise pop-ins and Charlotte's infidelity. As for what Trey would be up to during And Just Like That…, which premiered in 2021, MacLachlan has some ideas. 'It'd be very interesting,' he said. 'I had suggested that Trey has maybe moved to Napa and has a very successful winery and label there — you can see where I'm going with this. But no, I actually haven't said anything yet. Regardless, the show's doing great. They're all lovely. And I adore them.' Davis previously admitted on her Are You a Charlotte? podcast that she 'was kind of mad' at MacLachlan for passing on the writers' idea, which she felt symbolized Charlotte's 'unfinished feeling' about their divorce. 'She really wants to see him, and I, Kristin, also feel that way,' she added. 'So I'm hoping that we can kind of revisit a 'maybe they run into each other just at an event or a restaurant or something like that.'' Davis said, 'I did give him a hard time the other day, and then he explained his point of view and I did understand it. When you have played such a wonderful part in the past that people have such a great memory of, and it was so special as a work experience, you want it to kind of stay in this glorious place, and I think he just didn't want there to be kind of a sad note to the end. Can you believe that the first iPhone launched exactly 18 years ago on June 29? Do you remember what you were doing that day? Oh hang on, maybe you weren't even born then. The late Steve Jobs, then Apple's CEO, had unveiled the revolutionary smartphone five months earlier, in January 2007. In the intervening months, the company created enough hype to encourage hordes of people to descend upon Apple Stores in the U.S. and beyond to purchase the device that was to truly transform the fortunes of the California-based tech company. Recommended Videos An old ABC News clip about the iPhone's launch day features tech writer Steven Levy, now editor-at-large at Wired, summing up the level of excitement that surrounded the iPhone's launch. 'There's been nothing like this in my memory,' Levy tells ABC News reporter John Berman. 'I've been covering technology for over 20 years and I can't recall the anticipation for a product like this has.' Berman, meanwhile, has clearly been bedazzled by Apple's ad campaign, telling Levy: 'I consider myself at least of average intelligence, but they're in my head. Apple is in my head. Must get iPhone. Must get iPhone.' Levy responds with a comment that's aged well: 'Apple has always, throughout its history, struck a chord among people who like technology, and like it done really really well … it's a religion almost, for some people.' An unnamed contributor then takes up the religious theme: 'Steve Jobs — master marketer,' she says. 'The guy is incredible at bringing the Mac faithful to a fever pitch, and then those early adopters, those high-end geeks, go forth and spread the gospel of Apple.' Jessica, a woman waiting in line outside an Apple Store in New York City on iPhone launch day, offered her own take, telling Berman: 'Steve Jobs is an innovator, he always comes up with new creative things before anybody thinks of them.' She adds that everything Jobs comes up with is 'top notch,' prompting the reporter to mention the Apple Lisa, the failed PC launched by the company in 1983. But Jessica has never heard of it. Next, we see the Apple Store opening and the first customers heading inside to collect their brand new iPhone. Jessica buys two of them — one for her sister — and is shown counting out more than a thousand bucks for her purchase. 'I feel like I won the Olympic gold medal,' she says. The original iPhone featured a tiny 3.5-inch display and a basic 2-megapixel camera and went on sale for $499 (4GB) and $599 (8GB). The iPhone has been an astonishing success for Apple, generating around $1.5 trillion for the company over the years. 'Supernatural' Star Was Nearly Cast as Superman
'Supernatural' Star Was Nearly Cast as Superman originally appeared on Parade. Actor Jensen Ackles, best known for his roles in Supernatural and The Boys, is opening up about his decades-long career in the entertainment industry. While speaking to Collider for a June 25 interview, Ackles shared he was nearly cast as Clark Kent, AKA Superman, for the teen drama Smallville, which ran for 10 seasons until 2011. Ultimately, the iconic role went to Tom Welling. 'I would shock you if I told you how many jobs I didn't get compared to the ones I did get," said Ackles to the publication. 'I never felt discouraged by the ones that I didn't get. Again, this kind of goes back to lessons that I learned from the veterans. There was a multitude of people who told me that every audition, every meeting, every time you get into a room is a learning experience. So, even though you might not get the role, you learn from it. You try to make an impression on those people.' Ackles also noted that he was eventually cast as Clark's high school football coach, Jason Teague, during the show's 4th season. 'They brought me in after [Smallville] Season 3 and said, 'We've been trying to think of a way to incorporate you into the show, and we're just thankful you're still available,'" said Ackles during the interview. Welling spoke about Ackles nearly being cast as Clark during a July 2022 episode of his podcast, Talk Ville. "It was me and Jensen [for Clark]. I remember going in for the actual audition. I went in and there was a wonderfully handsome guy. And I was like, 'I think this guy is a real actor.' It was Jensen. Who ended up being Clark's football coach," said Welling on his podcast. While recording a March 2024 interview on the Talk Ville podcast, Kristin Kreuk, who played Lana Lang, spoke about being Ackles' on-screen love interest during Smallville Season 4. "It was so fun. I was watching it now and Jensen has such an easy kind of chill, like, he's just so cool. And so his performances are really free and natural. And I think that was nice for me to engage with," said the actress.
