Wynns hits sacrifice fly in the 10th as A's hand Rays 3rd-straight loss 4-3
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Austin Wynns hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning and the Athletics handed the Tampa Bay Rays a 4-3 loss on Tuesday night, their third straight. The Rays' last three-game skid came against the the Phillies at home in early May and they have now lost four of five to last-place teams. Advertisement Colby Thomas, who got his first career hit earlier, started the 10th on second base and was sacrificed to third by Denzel Clarke. No. 9 hitter Max Schuemann, who was starting in place of Jacob Wilson, the second-leading hitter in the majors who was a late scratch with a sore right hamstring, worked Mason Montgomery (1-2) for a walk ahead of pinch-hitter Wynns. Michael Kelly (2-0) got the win despite allowing two singles and throwing a wild pitch in the ninth. Mason Miller earned his 17th save, although he intentionally walked Jonathan Aranda with two outs and then threw a wild pitch to advance the runners before striking out Brandon Lowe. Max Muncy hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Shea Langeliers had a solo shot in the sixth for the A's. Christopher Morel, Lowe and Danny Jansen homered for the Rays. Advertisement Tampa Bay starter Shane Baz went seven innings, allowing five hits and matching his career high 11 strikeouts with just one walk. Key moment José Caballero, who stole his 30th base in the second inning, singled to lead off the ninth but was thrown out at second by Langeliers on the next pitch. Key stat With wins in the first two games of the three-game series, the A's have won a series against the Rays for the first time since April 2022. Tampa Bay had won eight-straight home series. Up next Tampa Bay RHP Ryan Pepiot (5-6, 3.36 ERA) is scheduled to start on Wednesday against the Athletics' RHP Mitch Spence (2-3, 3.83). ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press

J.C. Escarra shoulders burden for costly Yankees catcher's interference
Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free TORONTO — Yankees catchers are among the best in the game at stealing strikes and framing pitches. But the potential downside of that skill came back to bite them Tuesday for a second straight game as J.C. Escarra's catcher's interference loomed large in a 12-5 loss to the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. With runners on first and second and one out in a tie game in the bottom of the seventh, Luke Weaver thought he had a called third strike on Addison Barger. But as the pinch hitter checked his swing on a full count, his bat hit Escarra's glove, which led the Blue Jays to call for a challenge that they won to load the bases in what became a five-run rally. 'He wasn't going to swing, but at the end of the day, I shouldn't have been too close like that,' Escarra said. 'Going forward, I've really got to make it a priority to not get too deep in there.' To help frame pitches, Escarra — starting a second straight game for Austin Wells as he recovered from invasive testing for a lack of circulation in his finger — gets close to the plate and tries to catch the ball before it gets too deep. J.C. Escarra of the New York Yankees reaches for a wild pitch during the sixth inning of their MLB game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre on June 30, 2025 Getty Images But that can sometimes lead to interfering with swings, which he did on Tuesday for the third time this season, tying him for the major league lead. 'We're incredibly diligent on trying to eliminate that as much as possible,' manager Aaron Boone said. 'It is something we lean into every hitter — who are we vulnerable with, who are we not — and we do that accordingly with our catchers. … It's something we continue to lean into and try to eliminate as much as we can while also trying to leverage the strike zone as much as we can.' That said, the Yankees had something of a bone to pick on this one because it came on a check swing. Barger was not actually offering on the pitch, but hit Escarra's glove, awarding him first base instead of a strikeout looking. 'Should probably be something looked into where a check swing can't get you beat like that,' Boone said. Weaver called it a 'confusing one' because he did not see it in real time and thought he had a big second out. Toronto Blue Jays' Vladimir Guerrero Jr. douses teammate George Springer with water after their victory over the New York Yankees in a baseball game in Toronto on Tuesday, July 1, 2025. AP 'It's pretty devastating, honestly,' Weaver said. 'I feel like that's a really unfortunate part of our game and I don't personally think that belongs in our game. I think there should be some type of discretion to it. 'I understand that there are moments where it's very egregious and they hit the ball on a full swing. You feel like you earned something there and it was taken from you. That's out of my control at that point. But just a real silly thing to happen.'

Cardinals' Contreras sustains left hand contusion when hit by pitch from Pirates ace Skenes
PITTSBURGH — St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Willson Contreras sustained a left hand contusion after being hit by a pitch by Pittsburgh ace Paul Skenes while leading off the fourth inning of Tuesday night's 1-0 loss to the Pirates . Contreras stayed in the game to run the bases and was thrown out at home plate by Pirates left fielder Tommy Pham to end the inning while trying to score from second base on Pedro Pages' single. Contreras had X-rays on the hand, and they came back negative. He and Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said it is doubtful that the three-time All-Star will play in the teams' series finale on Wednesday. Contreas was replaced in the bottom of the fourth by Alec Burleson, who shifted from left field. Garrett Hampson took over in left. Contreras is hitting .248 in 82 games with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs. The 33-year-old Contreras sustained a season-ending fractured left middle finger last Aug. 24 when he was hit by a pitch. 'When I get hit in the arm or hand, I get a little worried,' Contreras said. 'I think I'm going to be OK, just a day or two (off).' The Cardinals are off Thursday before opening a three-game series Friday in Chicago against the Cubs. ___ AP MLB:
