Villagers plant paddy on muddy road in Madhya Pradesh village to protest delay in road construction

Time of India13-07-2025
BHOPAL: Frustrated by the dilapidated condition of a village road, residents in Papoundh village under Beohari janpad panchayat in Shahdol district adopted a unique mode of protest by planting paddy saplings on the muddy stretch.
The demonstration aimed to draw attention to their long-pending demand for road construction.
The protest comes in the wake of a similar viral video from Sidhi district, where locals took to symbolic gestures to highlight civic neglect. In Papoundh, villagers said they requested authorities for years to repair or construct the road, but their appeals were repeatedly ignored.
Another villager claimed that not a single trolley of gravel was laid on the road since Independence.
Residents said the poor condition of the road makes daily travel extremely difficult, especially for schoolchildren.
They warned that if their demands continue to go unheard, they will intensify their protest and take their message to the ballot box in the upcoming elections.
'I was trying to get the gravel road built for quite some time. The construction of gravel roads was stopped by the govt for nearly a year. Now the process of sanctioning such roads has started, but the sanction is done at district level and monsoon has already started,' Papound village panchayat Sarpanch, Vineet Kumar Chaturvedi, told

Gehlot slams Shah in Kanhaiya murder case

Veteran Congress leader Ashok Gehlot said Union Home Minister Amit Shah should clarify the delay in taking the Kanhaiya Lal murder case to conclusion in court. He said the case was taken over by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on the night of the incident three years ago. Still, the central agency has not been able to even get statements recorded in the case, the former chief minister claimed. Kanhaiya Lal Sahu, a tailor, was murdered by two cleaver wielding men in Udaipur in June 2022. Gehlot was the chief minister at the time. 'Our police had apprehended the accused within four hours of the incident. NIA took over the case in the night... but even after all this time, they have failed to make any headway,' Gehlot said at a press conference at his residence. 'In many cases, decisions are made within six months but this case is still pending. The lack of action has made people question the effectiveness of the government,' he added. Gehlot also accused the BJP of making false accusations and using the incident as a political tool during election campaigns. 'We gave government jobs to both sons (of Kanhaiya Lal) and provided a compensation package worth Rs 50 lakh. This was the largest compensation package given to anyone post-Independence,' he said. '(However) they falsely claimed that Kanhaiya Lal's family received only Rs 5 lakh while a Muslim family was given a compensation of Rs 50 lakh. They created Hindu-Muslim narrative and it contributed significantly to our defeat (in 2023 Rajasthan Assembly elections).' Targeting the Bhajanlal Sharma government, Gehlot alleged that law and order was deteriorating under the BJP's rule. 'Recently, a Dalit boy was kidnapped, stripped naked and taken from Alwar to Bundi. This is an indication of the growing fearlessness among criminals, and it is a worrying sign for the people of Rajasthan,' the former chief minister said. He said there was widespread criticism about the government's performance.

Madurai Bench of Madras HC raps collector, police for inaction over caste discrimination in temple

MADURAI: Shocked that even after 75 years of Independence, people are still being denied entry into temples over their caste, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, while hearing two petitions related to such an incident at a Mariyamman temple in Chinna Dharapuram, Karur, directed the HR&CE department, Karur collector and SP to file separate reports on the current situation, reason for the temple's closure, and steps taken to ensure joint worship. Justice B Pugalendhi criticised authorities for keeping the temple closed since 2018 due to communal tension. 'The closure of a public temple, not for days or weeks but for years, under the guise of law and order, is a dereliction of constitutional duty,' he said. 'Stopping everyone from entering is not the way to maintain peace. The law cannot treat the oppressor and the oppressed as equals. The government must remember that peace built by denying rights is not real peace, it is surrender,' he added, slamming the collector and police for inaction. The judge stressed that it is the duty of the HR&CE department and the state to ensure that no caste-based exclusion takes place in any temple. Citing the Kandadevi temple festival in Sivaganga, successfully conducted last year after a 17-year halt due to communal tension, he said it was possible only because the government took proactive steps, deployed adequate police force, engaged with communities, and ensured the participation of Scheduled Caste devotees.

Schedule finalised; 6 lakh workers to carry out Census 2027 in UP

Lucknow: The schedule to carry out the population Census-2027, including the first caste census since Independence, has been finalised. The on-ground work of enumeration will take place in two phases: listing and counting of houses in 30 days from May to June 2026, and then counting of people in 20 days from Feb 9 to 28, 2027. The final revision will take place from March 1 to 5, 2027, and the reference date for the Census will be March 1, 2027. The counting of homeless people across the country will be carried out in a simultaneous exercise after sunset on Feb 28, 2027. Uttar Pradesh is estimated to have a population of 25.70 crore currently. To carry out the census exercise, 6 lakh workers will be deployed, which include 5 lakh enumerators, 84,000 supervisors, and 12,000 state and district level officers. The state is divided into 18 divisions, 75 districts, 350 tehsils, 17 urban bodies, 21 cantonments, 57,694 panchayats, and 1.04 lakh revenue villages. The caste details of each member of every household will be collected during the second phase of the census in 2027. Another first for this census is the facility to capture and store data digitally. For this, an easy-to-use mobile app has been created. Enumerators will download this app on their phones and capture data on it. They will be paid an honorarium for this work. The option of self-enumeration has also been provided to the general public for the first time, and a special publicity campaign for this will be undertaken by the govt. A Census Management and Monitoring System portal has been developed to operate, manage, and monitor census-related activities in real time. This will allow monitoring of all works going on at the village or urban level from the state level itself. This will be the 15th census after the process was initiated in 1872, and the 8th after Independence.
