Kabul: Afghan security forces have seized 1,000 kg of illicit drugs and arrested two alleged drug smugglers in southern Afghanistan's Zabul province, the Ministry of Interior Affairs said in a statement on Thursday.
The opium was concealed inside a truck and discovered during a counter-narcotic operation in Shahjoy district, the ministry said, Xinhua news agency reported.
Two individuals were arrested in connection with the drug trafficking, and their dossiers were referred to the judiciary for further investigation, the statement said.
The Afghan national army thwarted attempts to smuggle drugs and detained three alleged drug smugglers in the southern Afghanistan Helmand province, said an army spokesman in the region, Jawed Agha, on Tuesday.
The contraband, which included 730 kg of opium poppy and was placed in the cavities of a vehicle, was identified and confiscated by the army personnel, the official added.
They have also discovered two assault rifles and two satellite phones from the possession of the arrested and handed them to concerned bodies for further investigation, the official said.
In a similar incident, police set on fire more than half a tonne of illegal drugs in the southern Afghanistan Kandahar province on Sunday.
The contraband, which included 130 kg of opium poppy, 480 kg of methamphetamine and 660 pieces of stimulant tablets, had been collected over the past two months and was burned publicly, the official added.
Police won't allow anyone to produce, process or traffic illegal drugs, the official further said.
In a similar operation, the Afghan security forces dismantled two drug processing labs and discovered more than 580 kg of illicit drugs in western Afghanistan's Farah province on Sunday, the office of the Deputy Minister of Interior for Counter-Narcotics said in a statement.
According to the statement, counter-narcotic police launched separate operations on the outskirts of the Bakwa district, where they destroyed two drug labs and confiscated 589 kg of illicit substances. Nine suspected drug smugglers were detained.
The Afghan interim government has stepped up its crackdown on illicit drugs and those involved in the business.

'Terror can never succeed' : Farooq Abdullah on neutralization of Pahalgam attackers

Srinagar, July 29 (UNI) National Conference President Farooq Abdullah today said that if the terrorists neutralized in an encounter with security forces on the outskirts of Srinagar yesterday were indeed the same individuals responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack, it sends a strong message that terrorism will never succeed. Dr Abdullah was responding to a question from reporters regarding Union Home Minister Amit Shah's statement in Parliament that the three terrorists killed in Srinagar yesterday were involved in the April 22 Pahalgam attack. 'I have not seen them. I do not know who they were. Only those who have seen them can identify who they were. If they were really the same terrorists, then it is a very good thing. It is a good thing that they have learned that terrorists can never be successful,' Abdullah said. Union Home Minister Amit Shah today said the three terrorists killed in gunbattle in Srinagar yesterday were identified as Suleiman alias Faisal, Afghan and Jibran and said they were behind the Pahalgam terror attack. How Op Mahadev unfolded: A day-by-day account of how the net closed in on Pahalgam terrorists

Security forces cordoned off the entire area and started sweeping the forest inch by inch, closing in from multiple directions. Meanwhile, the intelligence agencies worked on every possible source. Immediately after the attack, the Army had put in place a wide net to ensure the terrorists did not escape into Pakistan. So, according to security sources, the only option left to the terrorists was to move deeper into the Valley. And Dachigam forest, with its heavy foliage and difficult terrain, was the perfect hiding spot. New Delhi: The killing of the three LeT terrorists behind the Pahalgam massacre was the culmination of an operation that started immediately after the attack. Finally, it was on 22 May that the Intelligence Bureau (IB)—which was among the several agencies tracking the movement of the Pahalgam terrorists—got a credible input about their presence in the general area of the Dachigam forest near Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. On 22 May, the IB analysed what they had and decided that the human intelligence they had received was credible enough for them to focus on a particular area. Sources say that the information was shared with the Centre and a multi-agency coordinated operation was launched—Operation Mahadev. Sources say the operation was named after a hilltop in the area, Mahadev. 'Three terrorists were killed in a joint operation of the Indian Army, CRPF and Jammu and Kashmir Police (on 28 July). One of the terrorists, Suleiman, was a Grade A category commander of LeT (Lashkar-e-Taiba), and our agencies have ample evidence of his involvement in the Pahalgam and Gagangir terrorist attacks. Both Afghan and Jibran were Grade A category terrorists,' Home Minister Amit Shah told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. 'All three terrorists behind the Pahalgam terror attack have now been killed,' he added. Giving details of the operation, Shah said that from May 22 to July 22, continuous efforts were made to verify the human intelligence generated by the IB. He said that officers from the IB, Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and the CRPF kept patrolling in the cold at high altitudes to pick up the communication signals of the terrorists. The tactical part of the operation was being led by 4 Para, an elite unit of the Indian Army. As reported by ThePrint earlier, the terrorists were using a specialised communication system that was difficult to track. However, specialised interception systems were used by the forces and eventually they managed to track down the group of terrorists while they were communicating—a major success. On 22 July, the joint team was able to pinpoint the location of the terrorists to a much smaller area. Based on this, security forces threw a multi-tier security ring to ensure that the terrorists could not escape. Finally, a crack team of the 4 Para managed to get to the terrorists and the Indian Army announced their killing in Operation Mahadev on 28 July. 'We received a successful confirmation from sensors on 22 July. Then, a joint team of CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Police, led by jawans from 4 Para of the Indian Army, encircled the terrorists. The five human (intelligence) assets were also sent for operation, and the three terrorists were killed in the operation,' Shah told Lok Sabha. He said that further identification of the terrorists was done once the bodies were taken to Srinagar. 'NIA earlier arrested those who sheltered these terrorists. When their bodies were brought to Srinagar, we got them to identify the bodies.' Shah said. Shah added that the forces also matched the bullet casings from the Pahalgam massacre site to the weapons found on the terrorists to establish that the same weapons were used. 'After these terrorists were killed, their rifles were seized. One was an M9, the other two were AK-47s. We got these rifles flown to Chandigarh central FSL (forensic science laboratory) on a special plane,' Shah said, adding that these rifles were then fired to get empty bullet shells. 'These were then matched with those found in Pahalgam by the FSL personnel who worked through the night. It was then confirmed that these three rifles were used to murder our innocent civilians,' Shah said. 'I have the ballistic report, which has been cross-checked by six experts who confirmed on a video call at 4.46 am today that the rifles recovered from the terrorists are the same used in Pahalgam,' Shah added. Low On Supplies & Water, Fear Of Exposure: How Pahalgam Terrorists Were Traced, Tracked, Killed

Last Updated: Intelligence inputs revealed that the terrorists were receiving logistical support—including food and supplies—from local sympathisers who have since been intercepted After the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, since May, multiple units of the Indian Army, Rashtriya Rifles, CRPF, and Jammu & Kashmir Police have been deployed to high-altitude areas ranging from 5,000 to 13,000 feet. There were several instances where groups of terrorists were detected through intercepted communication sets. However, these sets often went silent before security forces could act on them effectively. To intensify the operation, Tactical Operating Bases (TOBs) were established across various strategic locations. Senior-level officers were stationed at these bases to coordinate and oversee the efforts until the region was cleared of terrorists hiding in the upper reaches of J&K. According to sources, specialised teams were formed, combining manual efforts with advanced technical surveillance systems to trace, track, and intercept terrorist movements. A senior intelligence officer was appointed to lead the input coordination, as confirmed by top sources in the intelligence community. Intelligence inputs revealed that the terrorists were receiving logistical support—including food and supplies—from local sympathisers who have since been intercepted. Security forces also identified and restricted access to water sources being used by the terrorists. One particular area around Dachigam was cordoned off by security forces, who began collecting more detailed intelligence regarding the terrorists' weapons, food supplies, and movement patterns. It was noticed that the terrorists were low on supplies, afraid of moving out, and under pressure to expose themselves. Several of their communication sets were successfully intercepted during this period. Roughly a week ago, the Intelligence Bureau (IB) received a critical tip-off from its cultivated assets indicating that a group of terrorists was hiding in the Dachigam area. Their identities were confirmed through both technical and human intelligence inputs. Based on intercepted communications, the search zone was narrowed down to a 1-kilometre radius. Ultimately, a surgical operation led by Para Special Forces neutralised three top terrorists: Suleman, alias Faizal Bhatt, Jibran, and Afghan. Suleman was a senior operative affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). All three were classified as A-grade terrorists. 'In joint Operation Mahadev, the Indian Army, CRPF, and J&K Police have neutralised three terrorists who were involved in the Pahalgam terror attack," union home minister Amit Shah said in Parliament on Tuesday. 'We have their voter ID numbers. The rifles and cartridges used were made in Pakistan." Providing more details, he said, 'All three terrorists—Suleman, Afghan, and Jibran—were killed in yesterday's operation. The people who used to supply food to them were detained earlier. Once the bodies of these terrorists were brought to Srinagar, they were identified by those who were kept detained by our agencies." view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
