KGMU performs partial knee replacement using microplasty technique

The microplasty targets only the damaged portion of the knee, preserving healthy tissue and bone. Based on modern computer navigation, it allows for precise alignment and faster recovery with minimal cuts and reduced blood loss.
The surgery was conducted by senior orthopaedic surgeon Prof Shailendra Singh on a 52-year-old woman from Sultanpur earlier this week. The patient was operated on under the Ayushman scheme of the govt.
Prof Shailendra Singh said, "This is the future of knee surgery. Instead of replacing the entire joint, we now fix only the damaged part. Recovery is faster, pain is less, and the results are long-lasting." It will cost around Rs 80,000-Rs 90,000.
He added that patients can often begin walking within 24 to 48 hours after surgery.
"For carefully selected individuals, implants may last over 15 years, with many returning to regular physical activity or sports in a short time," he said.
This technique is especially suited for individuals with localised medial compartment osteoarthritis, intact ligaments and stable joints—typically those who remain active even beyond the age of 40.
The surgery involved a small incision of around 6-8 cm, guided instrumentation for accurate placement and the use of the Oxford Knee implant—a proven device developed by Oxford University in partnership with Zimmer Biomet.

The implant's hallmark is a mobile bearing design that mimics natural knee movement and allows most patients to begin walking within 24 to 48 hours.
HoD orthopaedics department Prof Ashish Kumar said: "KGMU plans to expand the use of microplasty as a preferred treatment option in early-stage osteoarthritis, particularly among younger, active individuals. The university is also preparing to organise workshops and clinical sessions to train surgeons in this advancing technique."
The surgery team included anaesthesiologists Prof Vineeta Singh and Prof Manoj Chaurasia, as well as orthopaedic colleagues Prof Ravindra Mohan, Dr Deepak Chawda and Dr Ankur Maan.

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling has highlighted the state's performance under the Ayushman Bharat and Gopabandhu Jana Arogya Yojana schemes, saying more than 2.6 lakh people have received treatment since April 11. He said Odisha ranks second in the country in terms of enrolment under Ayushman Bharat and accused the opposition of spreading misinformation about the scheme's performance. According to the National Health Authority, Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY is the largest health assurance scheme in the world, which aims at providing a health cover of Rs five lakhs per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation to over 12 crores poor and vulnerable families (approximately 55 crore beneficiaries) that form the bottom 40 per cent of the Indian population. Last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Odisha government's flagship 'Subhadra' scheme in Bhubaneswar. Under this scheme, eligible women in Odisha aged 21 to 60 years will receive Rs 50,000 over five years, from 2024-25 to 2028-29. The amount will be disbursed as Rs 10,000 annually in two equal installments, directly credited to Aadhaar-linked, DBT-enabled bank accounts.

Govt must compensate for sudden deaths: Samajwadi Party MP
New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) Raising concern over the rising number of 'sudden deaths' among people across age groups, Samajwadi Party MP Ramashankar Rajbhar on Wednesday called on the Centre to establish a mechanism to document such fatalities and compensate the affected families. Speaking during the Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Salempur MP Rajbhar alleged that several people in his parliamentary constituency, ranging from children to the elderly, had died abruptly. 'A cricketer hit a six and collapsed; a man dancing at his nephew's wedding died on the spot. A schoolgirl fainted and died. A driver suffered a heart attack while driving and died. Whether it is brain haemorrhage or cardiac arrest — these sudden deaths are happening without warning," he said. Criticising the absence of official documentation, he said, 'There's no post-mortem, no survey, and no official record of these sudden deaths. We cannot leave these families to fend for themselves in despair." He urged the central government to investigate the incidents and provide compensation. 'The government must find a solution to this — a way to monitor and address such sudden deaths. I demand that families of the deceased be given a compensation of Rs 10 lakh," Rajbhar said. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Increases Honorarium For ASHA, Mamta Workers
Bihar: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a significant hike in the honorarium for ASHA and Mamta workers in recognition of their contribution to improving rural health services. ASHA Workers' honorarium was increased from ₹1,000 to ₹3,000, while Mamata Workers' honorarium was increased from ₹300 to ₹600 per delivery. Stressing the state government's commitment to strengthening healthcare since 2005, Mr Kumar said the increased incentives will boost the morale of frontline workers and further enhance health services in villages. In his X post, the Chief Minister said, "Since the formation of the government in November 2005, we have worked extensively to improve health services. ASHA and Mamta workers have played a significant role in enhancing health services in rural areas. Keeping this in mind and honouring the important contribution of ASHA and Mamta workers in strengthening health services in rural areas, a decision has been made to increase their honorarium. ASHA workers will now be provided with an incentive amount of 3,000 rupees instead of 1,000 rupees.
