Shohei Ohtani Aims to Break Dodgers' Consecutive HR Record as Team Hits the Road
Ohtani gave the Dodgers an early advantage with a solo shot to left-center field in the first inning on a sun-soaked day at Dodger Stadium for his National League-leading 37th homer of the season.
The Japanese slugger became the first MLB player to hit home runs in five consecutive games since Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees achieved the feat last season.
He also matched the Dodgers' franchise record for consecutive games with a home run, a milestone reached five times previously, most recently by Max Muncy in 2019.
The fear Ohtani puts in the hearts of opposing teams was laid bare when the Twins intentionally walked him with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, moving Mookie Betts into scoring position and Ohtani to first, where he represented the game-winning run.
Esteury Ruiz followed with a walk to load the bases, and Freddie Freeman lined a single to left field that got under the glove of the diving Harrison Bader, sealing the win and snapping the Dodgers' recent slump.
'How we got here today, showing the fight and willing ourselves to get Freddie an at-bat to win a game like that, I'd like to think that is momentum building,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters.
Ohtani, who signed a 10-year, $700 million deal with Los Angeles prior to last season, is the frontrunner for a second consecutive NL MVP award and fourth overall.
After becoming the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season last year, Ohtani continues to produce at the plate, leading the NL in runs scored, slugging percentage and OPS.
He returned to the mound last month for the first time since August 2023 following a second surgery on his right elbow.
Roberts has limited Ohtani's workload, with the two-way star pitching six times for a total of 12 innings this season as the NL West-leading Dodgers pursue a second consecutive World Series title.
The Dodgers open their road trip against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Friday.

Baseball: Veteran pitcher Maeda signs minor league deal with Yankees
NEW YORK (Kyodo) -- Veteran Japanese pitcher Kenta Maeda said Sunday he has signed a minor league contract with the New York Yankees. "I'm moving to the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate," the 37-year-old right-hander said in an Instagram post, just after the Iowa Cubs released him. In his 10th year in the United States, Maeda made the Detroit Tigers' Opening Day roster but was designated for assignment on May 1 after struggling to a 7.88 ERA in seven relief appearances. The Chicago Cubs then signed him to a minor league contract in mid-May. The former Hiroshima Carp ace has a 68-56 career record with six saves and a 4.20 ERA in the majors.

Miyu Yamashita Wins Women's Open for First Major Title
Miyu Yamashita turned 24 on Saturday, but the real celebration began a day later as she became the third Japanese golfer to win the Women's Open, following in the footsteps of Ayako Okamoto and Hinako Shibuno. Holding a three-shot lead through the midway point of the tournament, Yamashita saw her advantage narrowed to a single shot going into the final day of action at Royal Porthcawl in the UK. A two-under round of 70, though, was enough to seal the victory. Early in her final round, the Japanese player briefly shared the lead with Kim A-lim. However, the South Korean fell down the leaderboard following two consecutive bogeys. The biggest threat then came from Great Britain's Charley Hull, who cut Yamashita's lead to one shot with three holes to play. She carded an impressive three-under 69 but ultimately fell short after two bogeys on the 16th and 17th. Japan's Minami Katsu birdied the 18th to share second place with Hull. Miyu Yamashita Holds Her Nerve Approaching the final hole, Yamashita knew a bogey would be enough to win the tournament. Despite hitting the rough with her first two shots, she held her nerve with a nice chip to the green, before tapping in for par to finish on 11-under, two shots ahead of Hull and Katsu. It secured Yamashita her first major trophy. Her previous best was tying for second at the 2024 Women's PGA Championship. 'I'm so happy to have been able to achieve my goal of winning a major tournament,' said Yamashita. 'It's been a long journey. So many people have supported me. All the hard work I've put in has paid off.' She admitted to feeling the pressure but decided to stick to what she had been doing beforehand. 'That helped me make some long par putts, and I was able to hang in there on the 15th and 16th holes,' she added. Japan's Golden Era Yamashita is the fourth Japanese golfer to win an LPGA major title over the last two seasons. Yuka Saso became a U.S. Women's Open champion for the second time after a delightful performance at Pennsylvania's Lancaster Country Club in June 2024. The following month, Ayaka Furue lifted the Evian Championship trophy in France. That was her first major. There was also a maiden triumph for Mao Saigo earlier this year.
