NASCAR announces race on U.S. Naval base in Coronado scheduled for 2026

NASCAR is returning to Southern California, only its cars will be racing on the streets of Coronado and not on an oval in Fontana. The stock car racing circuit announced Wednesday it will be hosting a three-day series of races June 19-21, ending in a NASCAR Cup Series race on the U.S. Naval base in Coronado.
NASCAR did not race in Southern California last year for the first time since 1997, with the exception of 2021, when the schedule was hampered by the coronavirus pandemic. For much of that time, the races were held at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana but that track was torn down in 2023 to make room for a giant warehouse complex. NASCAR preserved part of the grandstand and had hoped to built a half-mile oval track on the site but that project has stalled and is unlikely to be revived.
NASCAR also raced on a temporary quarter-mile oval on the floor of the Coliseum but that event has also been abandoned.
Next summer's Coronado race, which came to fruition after years of careful negotiation, is the first NASCAR event to be run on an active military base, It is being timed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy and will feature a race weekend including an Xfinity Series race and a Craftsman Truck Series event.
NASCAR ran street course races in Chicago's Grant Park from 2023-25 but that event will not return in 2026, making the Coronado race the only street race on the schedule next year.
'NASCAR embodies the very best of the American spirit through speed, precision and an unyielding pursuit of excellence,' Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan said in a statement. 'Hosting a race aboard Naval Air Station North Island, the birthplace of naval aviation, it's not just a historic first, it's a powerful tribute to the values we share: grit, teamwork and love of country.
'We're proud to open our gates to the American people, honor those who wear the uniform, and inspire the next generation to step forward and serve something greater than themselves.'
Naval Base Coronado, known as the West Coast Quarterdeck, is a consortium of nine Navy installations stretching from San Clemente Island, 50 miles off the coast of Long Beach, to the Mountain Warfare Training Facility 50 miles east of San Diego.
'Hosting one of America's premier motorsports events on this historic base reflects our partnership with the local community and our shared pride in the nation's heritage,' said captain Loren Jacobi, commanding officer of Naval Base Coronado. 'We are privileged to showcase the dedication of our sailors alongside NASCAR's finest as we celebrate our 250th anniversary.'
The NASCAR San Diego logo features an F/A-18E/F Super Hornet, which is recognized as only being flown by the U.S. Navy. The three stars in the logo signify land, sea, and air, which represents the Navy as the only branch of the military to operate in all three spaces. The arch represents the mission-style architecture found in San Diego. The stripes at the bottom of the logo represent the four largest United States Armed Force branches: Air Force, U.S. Army, U.S. Marine Corps, and U.S. Navy.
Tickets for the 2026 NASCAR San Diego Weekend will go on-sale this fall.

Bryson DeChambeau's stunning 54-hole finish leaves him with major British Open regret

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland — Bryson DeChambeau looked like he'd played his way out of the British Open on Thursday, when he posted an opening-round 7-over 78. From there, though, he went on a tear, shooting 65 in the second round to make the cut on the number. That was followed by a third-round 68 and a final-round 64 on Sunday. It all added up to a stunning tie for 10th for DeChambeau. His total of 197 over the final 54 holes was the second-lowest ever in an Open. Only Henrik Stenson, en route to winning in 2016, bettered that with 196. 'It was a fun three days,' DeChambeau said. 'I was really proud of the way I turned it around and gave myself actually some hope. It was a very emotional week. I came in feeling like my game was right there, and all of sudden it was not there. 'I was able to hold myself together under the pressure and fight for every shot. I'm super proud of the round I played today. Just wish I could have that 78 back.' Harris English finished runner-up to Scottie Scheffler at 13-under, which was four shots out of the lead. It's the second time he's played bridesmaid to Scheffler in a major this year. English was tied for second at the PGA Championship, which Scheffler won in May. 'Losing to Scottie twice in two majors, the only guy to beat me at the PGA and this week,'' English said. 'I'm playing some good golf. Just need to clean it up a little bit. One of my two goals this year were to make it to the Tour Championship and make that Ryder Cup team, and hopefully I've moved myself a little bit closer to that, and hopefully I can get in that top six to lock up a spot.'' Rory McIlroy, of course, is bullish on Portrush because he's from Northern Ireland, but he raved about the venue. 'Honestly, I think Portrush has quickly turned into one of the best two or three venues that The Open goes to,' McIlroy said. 'Talk to every player this week, and they won't say one single bad thing about the golf course. Then I just think the way it sets up, from a logistical standpoint, I think the R&A have worked so well with the local government to make sure everything runs smoothly. 'It's only been six years since 2019. I'm not sure Portrush is going to have The Open every six years — that would be nice — but I would obviously love it to keep coming back.'

NASCAR reveals new street course race in San Diego for 2026

Two years ago, the NASCAR Cup Series made history with the sport's inaugural street course race through Chicago. Since the first race in 2023, the course's been a unique challenge for drivers on the grid. Next year, they'll have a new street course to prepare for. NASCAR officials announced that a new street course in San Diego will debut in the 2026 Cup Series season. The race will be held on Naval Base Coronado and replace the Chicago Street Course on the calendar. There will be three days of action from San Diego next year with the Craftsman Truck Series, Xfinity Series and Cup Series all competing in NASCAR's second-ever street course. It'll be a historic venue in its own right; this will be NASCAR's first race on a naval base. The race weekend will mark the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy. 'What a special way to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Navy, 250th anniversary of our country and put on what is going to be undoubtedly the most anticipated event of 2026,' NASCAR executive vice president Ben Kennedy said in a statement. 'And I'm bullish on it being the best sporting event of the year.' Lawsuit latest: Updates on 23XI Racing, Front Row Motorsports vs. NASCAR lawsuit Here's what we know about the event. When will NASCAR race in San Diego? NASCAR's race weekend in San Diego will be June 19-21, 2026, during Father's Day weekend. That weekend also coincides with the anniversary of the U.S. Navy and will take that weekend from the Pocono race from the 2025 calendar. NASCAR San Diego course The official course layout has yet to be released. NASCAR officials state that they're driving around the base in person and using the popular racing simulation video game iRacing to help iron out the layout. They used iRacing for both the Clash at the Los Angeles Coliseum and Chicago street race events. The course will likely use Naval Air Station North Island's streets as well as the runway tarmac. Officials expect the circuit will be roughly three miles in length. By comparison, the Chicago Street Course is 2.14 miles. 'It'll be a blend of traditional street racing in a way where we'll be winding our ways through some of the streets on the base,' Kennedy said in a statement. 'They'll be going past (aircraft) carriers. They'll eventually go out onto the tarmac, probably by some military aircraft, maybe a couple of F-18s out there, and then back towards the entrance to the base.' Why is NASCAR racing in San Diego? From 1997 through 2024, the Cup Series had a race in Southern California every year with one exception - 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions. The 2025 season is the first without a race in the area for no restricted reason since 1996. NASCAR's military ties, options for tarmac and street sections and the backdrop of downtown San Diego made the naval base a worthwhile venue. 'We contemplated a number of places, not just in San Diego, but the greater Southern California region,' Kennedy said. 'Naturally, I think we all started to gravitate towards the military base, seeing that we knew that the 250th anniversary was upcoming, our natural ties that we have to the military and then the location of it. I mean, you couldn't ask for a better location than Coronado, sitting between downtown San Diego, the Pacific Ocean and not far from Tijuana, either.' No specific number of events has been confirmed, but it's very likely San Diego will have at least three years, much like Chicago and Los Angeles Coliseum events. NASCAR's future in Chicago NASCAR confirmed it will not return to Chicago in 2026 but did not rule out a return in the future.
