Most Britons still prefer shopping in person
As many as two-thirds of UK consumers prefer to shop in physical stores rather than online, but online remains key as most of us do shop there and we get our inspiration there too — a quarter of us find inspiration for our wardrobes entirely on social media, influenced by platforms such as Instagram and TikTok via 'get ready with me content'.
That's according to a new study from outlet shopping destination Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet, which also said that data shows 'Gen Z lead in style confidence, [and] Manchester has been named the most fashionable city in the UK'.
The study was commissioned by Cheshire Oaks to mark its 30th anniversary and when asked to rank personal style on a scale from one to 10, Britons gave themselves an average score of five, with Gen Z (aged 18-24) 'being significantly more confident in their ability to create a 'fire outfit' and scoring themselves a far higher average of seven'.
Over 65s were the least self-assured in their fashion sense scoring just four out of 10.
Meanwhile, Manchester, London and Brighton residents rated themselves higher than the national average, with Mancunians taking top spot by rating themselves as a nine or even 10, higher than anywhere else in the UK.
Respondents said that on average they'd developed their personal style by the age of just 25.
As mentioned, social media was ranked as 'the key inspiration for sourcing stylish looks' but 64% of respondents said they prefer shopping in person. Leading reasons include the ability to try on items on (80%), to judge quality in person (70.4%), and avoid delivery issues (51%).
Older shoppers are most keen but for younger shoppers, the in-store experience remains relevant — 'especially when enhanced with entertainment, events, and hands-on discovery as reported by respondents aged 20-30'.
The outlet centre has reflected that in its anniversary year with a one-off, free live music gig this month. The line-up comprised a 'top secret' 2000s chart-topping headliner, The Sugababes, joined by DJ Howard Donald of Take That and event host, Hits Radio's Kimberly Wyatt.

Jesse Jenkins' courgette caviar and whipped ricotta on toast
Ingredients (for one large slice of toast and extra preserves) 1 kg courgettes (any color) 50 ml extra virgin olive oil (plus extra for storing) 200 g onions, thinly sliced 500 g tomatoes (ripe and ready) 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1 garlic clove 1 slice of toasted bread 100 g ricotta Juice and zest of one lemon 1 tablespoon olive oil Chopped chives or green onions to taste Salt and pepper to taste Preparation Use a mandoline to thinly slice the courgettes. You can halve them then cut them into half-moons or keep them in thin discs for more texture. If you're not using onions, just start with the courgettes. Put the oil and onions in a saucepan over a medium heat and cook for 10 minutes, or until soft and slightly browned. Add the courgettes and continue to cook over a medium heat for 20-30 minutes until they start to break down, stirring throughout. Grate all the tomatoes on a box grater, leaving only the skin behind. Add the grated tomato to the mix and continue to cook for another 30 minutes, stirring frequently. Add a little water if things begin to brown too much, though a little color here and there is a good thing. Add the vinegar, sugar and a generous pinch of salt and cook for another couple of minutes just to take the edge off the vinegar. Remove from the heat and, once cooled, place in sterilized jars and top off with extra virgin olive oil before sealing with a lid. Place the ricotta in a large bowl, add the olive oil, lemon juice and zest, salt and pepper, then whisk until smooth. Rub a little garlic on your toasted bread, spread the whipped ricotta, then top with the courgette caviar. Garnish with fresh lemon and chives or green onions. Once cooled, the remaining zucchini mixture can be stored in sterilized jars with extra virgin olive oil and kept in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator. Amazon tycoon Bezos says 'I do' in Venice as activists line the canals urging to 'Tax Billionaires'
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez tied the knot Friday, June 27, at a sumptuous ceremony with the rich and famous on an island in Venice's lagoon. "This city seems impossible! It can't exist and yet, here it is!" an enchanted Bezos told a La Repubblica journalist Thursday who got close to the magnate as he whizzed around the canals by boat. But protesters had a different view, wondering how long Venice can endure: While the billionaires party, activists say the fragile city is sinking, overrun by tourists, and a victim of depopulation as locals unable to pay soaring rents are forced out. "No Kings, No Bezos" read a sign in green neon projected on the St Mark's Campanile tower on Thursday night. "Tax Billionaires," read protest signs along the city's canals. "In the time it takes you to read this, Jeff Bezos's wealth has increased by more than your monthly salary," they read in English and Italian. Bezos and Sanchez, a former news anchor and entertainment reporter, celebrated their nuptials with guests including Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey and Orlando Bloom. The tech magnate, 61, and Sanchez, 55, are staying at the Aman hotel, a luxury 16th-century palazzo on the Grand Canal with a view of the Rialto bridge. Other A-list guests are staying at the Gritti Palace and the St. Regis. The couple exchanged vows at a black-tie ceremony on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore Friday afternoon, according to Italian and US media reports. The newlyweds were to be serenaded by Matteo Bocelli, son of the famed opera singer Andrea Bocelli, reports said. Michelin-starred chef Fabrizio Mellino prepared the wedding dinner, while the cake has been made by French pastry chef Cedric Grolet, the Corriere della Sera said. Sanchez is alleged to have prepared 27 outfits to wear during the festivities. Sanchez late Friday posted a photo on Instagram – under a new name, laurensanchezbezos – showing her in a long flowing white dress and Bezos in a black tux. Vogue, in a digital cover story featuring the bride, later posted that the gown was Dolce&Gabbana, "inspired by the one Sophia Loren wore in the 1958 film Houseboat." Mega yachts and dozens of jets Wedding guests snapped by paparazzi as they hopped into boats included Jordan's Queen Rania, French luxury goods executive Francois-Henri Pinault, American football player Tom Brady, US fashion designer Spencer Antle, the singer Usher, and Ivanka Trump, daughter of US President Donald Trump, and her husband, Jared Kushner. Bezos and Sanchez are donating three million euros ($3.5 million) to the city, according to Veneto's regional president Luca Zaia, and are employing historic Venetian artisans. Venice's oldest pastry maker Rosa Salva is baking 19th-century "fishermen's biscuits" for party bags that will also contain something by Laguna B, renowned for its handblown Murano glass. Help us improve Le Monde in English Dear reader, We'd love to hear your thoughts on Le Monde in English! Take this quick survey to help us improve it for you. Ivanka Trump and her family visited a glass-blowing workshop on the small island of Murano on Wednesday, according to the owner. "They were amazed and enchanted by the magic of glass," Massimiliano Schiavon told the Corriere della Sera, adding that the family had a go at blowing glass. Venice, home to the oldest film festival in the world, is used to VIPs whizzing around in speed boats, and happily hosted the star-studded nuptials of Hollywood actor George Clooney in 2014. Italy's tourism ministry said Friday it expected the wedding to bring the city nearly one billion euros, with about 895 million of that estimated to come from the "media visibility" generated. Environmental activists have also pointed to the carbon footprint of the mega yachts and dozens of private jets – at least 95 – bringing the rich and famous to the city. Meanwhile, Italy's health ministry has issued a red heat alert for Venice for the weekend, part of a heatwave affecting much of southern Europe.

Lorde kicks off Glastonbury festival with surprise set
Best known for hits including "Royals", "Green Light" and "Solar Power", the star's performance on the Woodsies stage coincided with the release of her much-anticipated fourth studio album which came out at midnight. Organisers shut off Woodsies field just before Lorde came on stage due to overcrowding as news of her appearance spread around the festival's sprawling Worthy Farm site. Headline acts this year include Neil Young and Olivia Rodrigo, with other highlights including Charli XCX and Rod Stewart. Scottish singer-songwriter Lewis Capaldi, meanwhile, was rumoured to be another of the TBAs who might perform a "secret set" at this year's festival. Capaldi wrote on Instagram "It's been a while..." as his new track "Survive" was released, marking his return to the music industry. Media reports speculated he could perform a slot scheduled for 4.55 pm (1555 GMT) on the festival's Pyramid Stage. The 28-year-old in 2023 announced that he was taking a break from performing, after struggling to finish his Glastonbury set days earlier. That year's Glastonbury was meant to be his comeback after he cancelled three weeks of shows due to the mental and physical effects of touring. He had previously spoken of his difficulties coping with fame and suffering panic attacks, while he has also been diagnosed with Tourette's Syndrome. In an Instagram post at the time, Capaldi thanked the crowd for helping him, adding that he "used to be able to enjoy every second of shows like this". "But the truth is I'm still learning to adjust to the impact of my Tourette's and on Saturday it became obvious that I need to spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order, so I can keep doing everything I love for a long time to come." He added: "I'll be back as soon as I possibly can." Tourette's is a neurological condition that causes a person to make involuntary sounds or movements called tics. Stress and anxiety are common triggers. The award-winning singer-songwriter, is best known for his 2019 hit "Someone You Loved", which was a number one in the UK and United States. But despite the best-selling single and a best-selling album, he has spoken of having imposter syndrome caused by anxiety. © 2025 AFP
