Wife's reaction says it all as Djokovic incident sends shivvers through Wimbledon

Yahoo2 days ago
Novak Djokovic admits his body is not what it once was after a 'nasty' incident in his Wimbledon quarter-final win that left wife Jelena horrified and sparked huge concerns for the Serb. Djokovic set up a blockbuster clash against World No.1 Jannik Sinner in the last-four after ending the fairytale run of Italian young gun Flavio Cobolli, 6-7 (6-8) 6-2 7-5 6-4.
But the seven-time champion suffered a frightening late fall on the Centre Court grass that saw him scream in pain and left him sprawled out behind the baseline. The sickening scenes came while Djokovic held a second match point, having come back from dropping the opening set to stand on the cusp of victory.
Cobolli was trying desperately to stay in the contest and his shot from the opposite baseline wrong-footed Djokovic, who stretched to try and retrieve the ball but ended up doing the splits. The 38-year-old let out an audible scream, before ending up lying face-down on the grass as Cobolli and chair umpire Eva Asderaki-Moore both came over to check on the stricken Serb.
Thankfully, the 24-time major winner was able to gingerly get back to his feet, before winning the next two points to book a place in his 14th Wimbledon grand slam semi-final. That sees the 38-year-old surpass Roger Federer's record of 13 appearances in the last-four and makes him the oldest men's semi-finalist since Aussie tennis legend Ken Rosewall in 1974.
Djokovic admitted afterwards that his trademark slides can be risky on the Wimbledon grass but was hopeful he'd avoided any significant injury before his semi-final clash with Sinner. "It was a nasty slip and that's what happens when you play on the grass. You expect to fall with the way I move and slide on the grass," said Djokovic.
"It came at an awkward moment but I managed to close it out. I will visit this subject with my physio and hopefully it will be fine in two days." But he later admitted in his post-match press conference: 'Obviously (my) body is not the same today like it was before, so I guess the real impact or effect of what happened, I will feel tomorrow. So let's see."

Djokovic's victory keeps his quest for a record 25th grand slam title alive and sets up a mouthwatering semi-final clash with World No.1 Sinner, who beat American 10th seed Ben Shelton 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 6-4 in their last-eight clash. It will be the 10th time Djokovic and Sinner have faced off, with the Italian holding a 5-4 career record over Djokovic.

The Serb has won their only two previous matches at Wimbledon though, beating Sinner in the semi-finals in 2023 and the quarter-finals in 2022. Sinner was fortunate to progress to the quarters after trailing Grigor Dimitrov by two-sets-to-love in their last-16 clash before the Bulgarian had to retire with a torn pec in heartbreaking scenes.
Sinner also injured his elbow in a fall during that match and was sporting a white sleeve on his racquet arm to protect it during the quarter-final win over Shelton. There was a brief moment of concern for the Italian when he clutched at the elbow after trying to return a booming serve from the American, but it was an otherwise ruthless straight-set victory for the three-time major winner.
"When you are in a match with a lot of tension, you try to not think about it," said Sinner, who has reached his fourth straight grand slam semi-final. "It has improved a lot from yesterday to today." The winner of Sinner's semi-final with Djokovic will play either two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or American fifth seed Taylor Fritz in the Wimbledon final.

Aryna Sabalenka's Millionaire Boyfriend Goes Viral At Wimbledon

Aryna Sabalenka's Millionaire Boyfriend Goes Viral At Wimbledon originally appeared on The Spun. Aryna Sabalenka is facing an uphill climb to win this year's championship at Wimbledon. The world No. 1 ranked player has her hands full against American tennis star Amanda Anisimova. Advertisement Sabalenka suffered a scare at Centre Court during the quarterfinals, defeating Laura Siegemund 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Following her win over Siegemund, she told reporters that she learned from her meltdown against Coco Gauff at the French Open. "I think there's a big possibility that I would have lost this match if I didn't learn that lesson at the French Open," Sabalenka said. "In some moments I just ... kept reminding myself, 'Come on, it's the quarterfinal of Wimbledon, you cannot give up, you cannot let the emotions just take over you and lose another match.'" While the spotlight will be firmly on Sabalenka throughout the Wimbledon Championships, it appears her boyfriend has everyone's attention this Thursday. Sabalenka's boyfriend, entrepreneur Georgios Frangulis, has been by her side since April of 2024. Last summer, he celebrated her victory at the US Open. Advertisement "There was a really tough period where I was really happy to have him by my side, always cheering me up, always making sure that we are doing some fun stuff," Sabalenka said. Frangulis is the founder of Oakberry, a global açaí brand that originated in his home country of Brazil. Even though Frangulis has generated millions of dollars through Oakberry, he showed up to the Wimbledon semifinals in a pretty odd outfit. During the first set of Sabalenka's match, he was spotted in her box wearing a blank tank top. Fans usually dress their best at Wimbledon. After all, it's one of the most prestigious tournaments in all of sports. Advertisement That being said, Frangulis is getting ripped on social media for his lackluster outfit. If Sabalenka advances to the final, Frangulis may want to go with a different look for that match. Tennis Fans Call Out Aryna Sabalenka For Hypocritical Behavior

Tennis Fans Call Out Aryna Sabalenka For Hypocritical Behavior originally appeared on The Spun. Aryna Sabalenka's hopes of winning her first Wimbledon title were crushed on Thursday by Amanda Anisimova. Advertisement Anisimova defeated Sabalenka in a three-set thriller, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. It was a really impressive performance for the American, especially considering where she was just a year ago. She took a break from the sport due to mental health concerns. Fast forward to the present day, and she's playing the best tennis of her career. "To be honest, if you told me I would be in the final at Wimbledon, I would not believe you," Anisimova said following her win over Sabalenka. "At least not this soon, because I mean, it's been a year turnaround since coming back and to be in this spot, I mean, it's not easy. And so many people dream of competing on this incredible court. It's been such a privilege to compete here, and to be in the final is just indescribable." While Anisimova expressed gratitude for her win, Sabalenka made it clear she wasn't thrilled about the loss. During her media availability on Thursday night, the three-time Grand Slam champion called out Anisimova for celebrating early during a point in the second set. Sabalenka asked the chair umpire to penalize Anisimova for hindrance. Advertisement "I was just trying to chase the ball. She was already celebrating it. I was like 'I mean, that's a bit too early.' She kind of pissed me off like saying 'That's what she does all the time.' But I was grateful and thankful that she said that because I was like, it actually helped me to keep fighting. I was like ok, now I'm gonna show you the tennis," Sabalenka told reporters. "I came back because I got really angry in that moment. Probably in the 3rd set I should've remembered and probably it would've helped. But it is what it is." Jul 8, 2025; Wimbledon, United Kingdom; Aryna Sabalenka at her post match interview after winning her match against Laura Siegemund of Germany on day nine at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Mullane-Imagn Images. Not only did fans hate these post-match remarks from Sabalenka, they found them to be hypocritical. Advertisement For as great as Sabalenka is, she expressed herself on the court more than any other player. She probably shouldn't be judging others for doing the same. "I hope this is satire. Sabalenka rapidly becoming one of the more unlikeable players on tour because she'll do anything but credit her opponent," one fan said. "She's clearly not aware of how much obnoxious she is all over her matches," a second fan replied. "This woman just cannot lose gracefully," a third fan wrote on X. "Aryna complaining about hindrance is crazy," another fan said. This is the second Grand Slam tournament in a row that Sabalenka has been accused of being a sore loser. Following her loss to Coco Gauff in the French Open final, she made a pretty ridiculous comment that grabbed everyone's attention. Advertisement "If Iga had beaten me the other day, I think she'd come out today and get the win," Sabalenka said. Hopefully, Sabalenka can learn from her mistakes at Wimbledon. If not, fans will continue to get on her case.
