You Can Dig for Diamonds at This State Park—and You Can Keep What You Find
Crater of Diamonds is located on a former volcanic crater, and in 1906, a local farmer named John Huddleston found diamonds here. Since then, over 35,000 diamonds have been unearthed from the mineral-rich soil, the largest diamond ever discovered in the United States, the 40-carat 'Uncle Sam." In 1972, the property became a state park, and now, visitors can try their luck and dig for diamonds in the park's 37-acre field. Any gems, rocks, or minerals that you find—diamonds, or otherwise—are yours to keep.
The park primarily has three types of diamonds: white, yellow, and brown. You can view the diamond hunters' "Hall of Fame," at the park's Diamond Discovery Center, which showcases the most impressive gems unearthed at the park. As recently as May 2025, a visitor to the park from Minnesota found a 3.81-carat brown diamond, the largest found so far this year. However, there are other stones and gems that can be found on-site, including quartz, agate, garnet, and jasper.
If you're looking to find a treasure for yourself, the best time to go is after rain, says park superintendent Waymon Cox.
'Many of the park's largest diamonds are found on top of the ground," Cox says. "As rain falls in the search area, it washes away the dirt and uncovers heavy rocks, minerals, and diamonds near the surface.'
Admission for diamond hunting is $15 for adults and $7 for children. Aspiring rock hunters can bring their own tools or rent equipment from the park. Crater of Diamonds has things like shovels, screens, wagons, sarucas (a bowl-shaped screen covered with a fine mesh), and buckets on hand. Local stores in town also sell gem-hunting gear such as Lovejoy Diamond Screens and Murfreesboro Hardware. If you do find something, you can get it certified by the park rangers. However, Cox recommends not getting too caught up in the quest to find diamonds—there's much to appreciate at the park.
'Though most guests don't find a diamond on their first visit, there are lots of other unique and beautiful rocks and minerals to collect,' says Cox.
If you're not interested in diamond digging, Crater of Diamonds also has a seasonal water park, miles of hiking trails, and, because of its location, prime stargazing unaffected by city lights. You can spend the night (especially if you plan on spending several days mining) at the shaded campground. It has 47 sites with full hookups for RVs and tents, plus five more basic tent sites, all with access to the two bathhouses.

The family, having already taken the monorail in the morning, opted to take a ferry. On board, the family split up: Deanna took one daughter to the upper deck while her husband and their other daughter stayed down below. Although it was both 'dark' and 'rainy,' Deanna claims she was still able to see the incoming transit hub as they motored across the Seven Seas Lagoon. As the boat made its approach, Deanna kept her daughter seated while she stood up. But then the unexpected happened. 'The boat hit with full speed, I mean, it went full speed into this barrier,' Deanna tells PEOPLE. She describes her feelings in that moment as "just pure terror. It was like being on the frickin' Titanic… People were thinking the boat was going down, a pregnant woman fell down, there were kids at the front of the boat when it happened and got crushed into the railing.' Deanna claims there was no warning before the passengers were jolted forward and no response from the crew afterwards. 'Absolutely nothing was said,' she claims. 'No apologies, nothing." Instead, Deanna says the other passengers on the boat were helping one another to safety. One woman hugged and comforted Deanna's daughter during the ordeal. 'I had a small child, literally screaming because she was scared. She wasn't hurt, but she was just absolutely terrified,' she says. 'As a parent, it sends you into this fight or flight. I'm still shaking thinking about it.' After the family got off the boat, she remembers seeing cop cars 'everywhere' and a 'handful' of ambulances. She says emergency service personnel from the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD) and Orange and Osceola Counties were on site. Representatives for the Orange County Fire and Rescue Department and Osceola Fire Rescue confirmed to PEOPLE that officials responded to the incident as part of a mutual aid agreement with CFTOD (Walt Disney World's special jurisdiction). The 'District' did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. While shaken, the family still visited Animal Kingdom the following day for their final day in the parks. Deanna, who says she experienced a rope burn while trying to grab something during her fall on the boat, requested an evaluation at the park's medical office. The medic 'did mention that there was heavy bruising on my hand and it had a lack of mobility. Unfortunately, all she could do was give me Ibuprofen and some ice,' Deanna remembers. Additionally, Deanna claims her foot suffered an injury as she struggled to walk and was unable to work on Aug. 1. 'I've been going to Disney for 25 years and I can't see myself going back because now I'm horrified,' the Florida resident says. Deanna first recounted the incident on TikTok on Aug. 1. However, she claims she needed to make it 'friends only' because of the "belittling" comments of some other uses. The comments have since been deleted and/or removed.A representative for Disney World did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. A lot of people screaming and really hurt bad…Not only was there no announcement on what to do when injured, they just had us get off the boat.' A visa to the land of the free may soon cost you $15,000. The State Department issued a notice Monday saying that it will require bonds of up to $15,000 to secure some tourist and business visas. The high bond fees, which would be kept as insurance and then refunded when visitors leave the country, will be levied against tourists from countries with high rates of overstays, according to the notice. The administration has not yet specified what those countries will be. The 12-month pilot program is set to go into effect this month, and joins other recent visa restrictions, such as the reinstatement of in-person interviews. Donald Trump tried this once before: In 2020, during the final months of his presidency, he instituted visa bonds for travelers from a number of African countries. However, the Covid-19 pandemic dampened travel so severely that it didn't have much impact and the measure was struck down by President Joe Biden when he took office. This move will likely make travel to the U.S. unaffordable for many at a time when the number of international visits to the U.S. is already plummeting. Forbes projected that Trump's policies will cost the U.S. up to $29 billion in lost tourism and put millions of jobs at risk—and that's without visa bonds.
