
Feds issue urgent warning over risk of Boeing 737 Max engines leaking smoke into cabin, cockpit
Damage to the engine's oil system can cause smoke from hot oil to enter the airplane ventilation system and fill the cabin or cockpit – presenting an extreme danger of incapacitating the pilots, the National Transportation Safety Board wrote in a report released Wednesday.
The recommendations were inspired by two incidents on Southwest Airlines flights, when CFM International LEAP-1B engines malfunctioned after bird strikes and poured smoke into the cabins.

In December 2023, a Boeing 737-8 filled with 'acrid white smoke' shortly after takeoff from New Orleans, La. It was so thick that the captain struggled to see the instrument panel in the cockpit, the NTSB said.
An engine on another flight in March 2023 was similarly damaged by a bird strike, allowing fog to funnel into the passenger cabin shortly after departing Havana, Cuba.

Both flights required emergency landings, and there were no injuries, the safety agency said.
The NTSB is recommending modifications to the engines, which are used on Boeing 737 Max planes and Airbus A32 jets.
In an urgent notice, it is asking the Federal Aviation Administration to evaluate whether LEAP-1A and LEAP-1C engines have the potential for the same issue.
The NTSB also expressed concern that flight crews are unaware of the potential smoke hazard and won't know how to take action. The agency said it had urged the FAA to require operators like Boeing to alert crews of the smoke risk.

Boeing has already revised its flight manuals for pilots detailing what steps to take to prevent smoke from entering the cockpit or cabin, the NTSB said.
'CFM International and Boeing have been working on a software design update. We support the NTSB's recommendation,' Boeing told The Post in a statement.
GE Aerospace, which owns CFM International, told The Post it is also aligned with the NTSB's recommendations and 'the work is already underway.'

Why Ram had to revive its legendary Hemi V-8 engine
American pickup truck buyers are having some trouble adjusting to a new age of tightening emissions requirements and electrification. Stellantis — the parent company of brands like Ram Trucks, Jeep and Dodge — has been hit especially hard. The company briefly removed its popular gas-powered Hemi V-8 engine from much of its lineup, including from the Dodge Challenger and Charger, and the Ram 1500 half-ton pickup. Ram fans revolted. In an effort to revive the brand, recently installed CEO Antonio Filosa rehired company veteran Tim Kuniskis to run Ram. Kuniskis is also overseeing all the North American brands, including the reformed in-house performance shop Street and Racing Technology, or SRT. One of Kuniskis's first moves has been bringing the V-8 back to the 1500 pickup truck. Ram Truck sales had dropped every quarter since the company switched the engine in the 1500 to an inline-six-cylinder called the Hurricane. The Jeep and Ram brands are especially important to Stellantis. RBC Capital has estimated that about 50% of the automaker's profits come from those two brands. Kuniskis said dropping the Hemi would lose Ram at least 30,000 truck sales every year. "With loyalty running in 75% to 80% in the truck segment, you don't want to lose any of those customers," he said. Ed Kim, President and chief analyst at AutoPacific, a company that surveys car owners, said he had driven a vehicle with the new Hurricane engine. "It's a very nice engine," Kim said. "It's very refined. It's very smooth. On paper it's better in every way — well, better in many ways." But the Hemi had a certain brand name and reputation among Ram owners the Hurricane could not replace, he said. "Everybody, even if you don't know what Hemi is, you know, the term," Kuniskis said. "'Oh, it's got a Hemi.'" The decision to go "greener" — or use smaller engines and invest in electric vehicles — kicked into high gear when the Euro-American Fiat-Chrysler merged with France's Groupe PSA in 2019. PSA CEO Carlos Tavares took the helm of the newly formed Stellantis. Some of those changes alienated fans. "The wrong people were trying to guide America, American enthusiasts, in a direction they did not want to go and still don't want to go," said Mike Gresham, director of recruiting for Central Texas Mopars, a car club dedicated to cars in what is commonly considered the Chrysler or Mopar family of brands — Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, and Ram, along with defunct brands like Plymouth. "Americans associate truck performance with V-8 engines and Ram in particular," Kim said. "The Ram customer in particular, really, really, really loves the idea of having that big American V-8 under the hood." Kuniskis expects about 40% of Ram buyers sooner or later to settle on the Hemi engine. That's a lot higher than the Ford-150 V-8 take rate of about 25%, but slightly lower than General Motors — which Kuniskis attributed to the fact that, apart from a diesel, GM offers a choice of two V-8s or a four-cylinder. Ford F-150 buyers can swap in a V-8 for free on most versions of the truck. Ram buyers have to pay an extra $1,200 unless they get the high-end Limited or Longhorn trims. Kuniskis said he thinks a lot of people will choose the Hemi anyway. "Hemi is not really just a V-8. It's kind of a brand in and of itself. It's become a thing," he said. Boeing's very first jetliner, the 707, began commercial flights in 1958. A scant 10 years later, the demand for air travel was so great that Boeing unveiled its new 747 to the world, which held more than twice the number of passengers as the 707. Originally, the 747 was to be a double-decker configuration, but engineers struggled with freight capacity and the ability to rapidly evacuate passengers in the event of an emergency. Eventually, a compromise was reached where the double-deck height was still present at the front of the aircraft, creating the 747's unmistakable, signature hump. On cargo-carrying variants of the 747, this clever design facilitated placing the cockpit above and out of the way of the hinged front nose section for loading. The resulting upper-deck area behind the cockpit could be utilized for additional seating or a swinging lounge and bar area. Total passenger capacity depends on how each 747 is configured, but fitting 660 of your fellow humans onboard is possible in a dense layout of exclusively economy seats. For propulsion, the Boeing 747 relies on a brace of four turbofan engines that burn a whopping 3,500 to 3,800 gallons of fuel per hour at cruising speed. The exact fuel burn rate is dependent on the passenger capacity, as well as the particular make and model engines that are installed. Suffice to say, however, the average 747 burns about one gallon of fuel per second. Obviously, that insatiable thirst for kerosene-based Jet A-1 requires a massive fuel capacity to match. Its impressive cruising speed of 580 MPH means that one mile is covered every 6.2 seconds. Using the fuel burn rate provided by BBC's Future Planet, that equates to fuel economy of 0.18 miles per gallon. While that figure is certainly shocking, one must also consider that, unlike the latest Toyota Prius, the 747 is carrying hundreds of passengers over which to amortize the expenditure. In order to facilitate such high fuel consumption on the long-haul international routes that are typical of the Boeing 747, it carries approximately 48,400 gallons of fuel. That's enough to get you from, say, New York to London. However, longer routes like Los Angeles to Sydney require more fuel capacity still. Indeed, some variants like the 747-8i Intercontinental carry 63,034 gallons of fuel. So where does 50,000 to 60,000 gallons of fuel go? Primarily, the fuel tanks are located in the aircraft's wings, although select 747s are configured to store additional fuel in the plane's horizontal stabilizer at the tail. Over the years, aviation authorities worldwide relaxed rules that prohibited jets with two engines from operating long overwater flights. That ushered in the dominance of modern aircraft like the Airbus A330 and Boeing's own 777 which are more fuel efficient with only two engines. Nowadays, the 747 passenger jet is disappearing, but it's not altogether gone. Airlines are inspecting Boeing 787 fuel switches after the first Air India crash report put them in the spotlight
Numerous airlines are inspecting the fuel-cutoff switches on their Boeing planes after investigators released their initial findings into the tragedy of Air India Flight 171. On June 12, the London-bound Boeing 787 crashed 32 seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport in India. All but one of the 242 people on board were killed, as well as 19 on the ground. In a preliminary report published last Friday, India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau said that seconds after liftoff, the fuel was cut off to both engines, immediately shutting them down. The fuel-cutoff switches have a stop-lock mechanism that requires them to be pulled outward before they can be moved up or down, preventing accidental movement. Brackets also guard them from being mistakenly knocked. The report said cockpit audio showed one of the pilots asking the other why he had cut off the fuel, but he responded that he had not done so. Friday's report also references a 2018 bulletin from the Federal Aviation Administration. It advised inspections on several Boeing models, including the 787, after receiving reports that some 737s had fuel control switches installed with the locking feature disengaged. "If the locking feature is disengaged, the switch can be moved between the two positions without lifting the switch during transition," it said. "Inadvertent operation of the switch could result in an unintended consequence, such as an in-flight engine shutdown." Air India had not carried out inspections as the bulletin was advisory and not mandatory, the preliminary report said. Since Friday, numerous airlines have begun such inspections, but no issues have yet been found. A source familiar with the matter told Business Insider that Air India began carrying out voluntary checks of the fuel control switches on its 787s and 737s over the weekend. About half of the 787s and almost all of the 737s have been inspected so far, with no problems found, the person added. The checks are expected to be completed by Wednesday. India's aviation regulator on Monday ordered the country's airlines to inspect the fuel control locking feature in accordance with the 2018 advisory. A spokesperson for Germany's Lufthansa told BI that checks had been carried out on the fuel control switches on the Boeing 787s of Lufthansa and its subsidiary Austrian Airlines, "as a precautionary measure." "No findings were made," they added. United Airlines declined to comment on whether it was conducting inspections. Singapore Airlines and Japan Airlines told Reuters that they were carrying out precautionary checks on the switches. Neither immediately responded to requests for comment sent by BI outside local working hours. The news agency reported that South Korea's transport ministry ordered the country's airlines to inspect fuel control switches, in line with the FAA's 2018 bulletin. "At that time (2018), it was a recommended measure and was not fully inspected," the government's statement reportedly said. Several outlets also reported that the FAA issued a continued airworthiness notification to the international community (CANIC) late Friday, saying it does not believe its 2018 advisory means any planes are unsafe. Friday's preliminary report only establishes the known facts rather than analysing the cause. It did not issue any recommendations to operators of Boeing 787s or GE engines. In an internal memo obtained by several outlets, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said the report "provided both greater clarity and opened additional questions." A final report is expected within 12 months of the incident.
