NEW DELHI: The
Indian Navy
received Udaygiri, a new stealth frigate built under Project 17A on Tuesday, from Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. This is the second of seven ships being built under the project, with construction underway at MDL and GRSE in Kolkata.
Project 17A is an advanced version of the Shivalik-class frigates already in service. These warships are built for "blue water" operations and can handle both traditional and modern threats across India's maritime zone.
Udaygiri carries forward the legacy of the original INS Udaygiri, which served the nation for 31 years before being decommissioned in August 2007. The new ship comes with upgraded stealth features, modern weapons, and advanced sensors.
It represents a significant improvement over the earlier P17 class.
The ship has been designed by the Indian Navy's Warship Design Bureau and built using an 'Integrated Construction' method — a process that reduces build time by pre-fitting components in smaller sections. Thanks to this method, Udaygiri was delivered within 37 months of its launch.
Compared to the earlier version, the new P17A ships are 4.54% larger in hull size and have a sleeker, stealthier profile.

They are powered by a combination of diesel engine and gas turbine (CODOG setup), along with a Controllable Pitch Propeller on each shaft. An Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) runs onboard systems.
The ship's weapon suite includes supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, a 76mm gun, and close-range rapid-fire weapons.
The Defence Ministry said Udaygiri reflects the country's progress in self-reliant shipbuilding, with over 200 Indian MSMEs involved.
Most of the warship's major components, weapons, and sensors are sourced from local manufacturers.
The project has also created jobs — about 4,000 directly and over 10,000 through indirect and support roles. The remaining five ships of the P17A class are in different stages of construction and are expected to be delivered by the end of 2026.

Bengaluru founder's 'strict 72-hour workweek' to promote a 'building mindset' sparks online uproar: 'Make employees partners'

In a country already grappling with blurred work-life lines, a Bengaluru entrepreneur 's post about rigid office timings has ignited fresh debate on workplace expectations , the price of ambition, and the elusive dream of building a globally recognised product from India. 10 AM to 10 PM, 6 Days a Week Mohan Kumar, co-founder of mobile gaming startup Matiks , recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to proudly describe the work ethic of his team. His words, however, left the internet sharply divided. 'We have strict office timing of 10 am - 10 pm and 6 days a week. Still, our team members work beyond 10 and on Sundays as well,' Kumar wrote, triggering waves of responses from both supporters and critics. In his post, he acknowledged the anticipated backlash but stood firm in his belief that such dedication was necessary to build India's 'first global product.' Let's move out from job mindset to building mindset.' — themohment (@themohment) Beyond a Paycheck In a conversation with Hindustan Times , Kumar clarified that Matiks isn't just another tech startup — it's a movement. 'We don't look at our team as employees,' he said. 'We see them as founding members on a shared mission.' You Might Also Like: 'Work 70 hours a week for your bosses until you are replaced by AI': Shark Tank trolls working professionals According to Kumar, the company isn't built for survival or driven by monthly paychecks but is rather aiming to put India on the global product map. 'Of course, not everyone resonates with this mindset, and that's okay,' he added. 'But for those who do, this journey doesn't feel like a 'job.' It feels like chasing a dream.' Netizens React: 'Build or Burnout?' Kumar's post soon became a flashpoint for heated discussion around hustle culture and modern workplace values. Some applauded the startup's bold mission, calling for equity sharing to complement the commitment. 'I am 100% with this approach,' one user wrote. 'But if you want employees to move from job mindset to building mindset, make them partners in business.' Others, however, raised concern about sustainability and mental health . 'There is absolutely no loyalty,' said a user. 'Companies will let go of employees at the first sight of trouble… A good work-life balance is essential to success.' Another user added, 'Hard disagree, almost no one can sustain peak IQ bandwidth beyond 40-50 hours a week… Anything beyond that is slop.' You Might Also Like: Sudha Murthy on Narayana Murthy's 70-hour workweek remark: 'Success has no magic wand' Kumar tried to argue that work pressure isn't inherently bad — but only when one is passionate about the task at hand. 'Work pressure comes when you work for something that you don't like,' he replied. Kumar's statement has revived a lingering conversation about ambition versus wellbeing, particularly in India's fast-paced startup culture. While some admire the vision of creating a world-class product from Indian soil, others caution against celebrating overwork at the expense of long-term creativity and mental health.

The Defence Accounts Department (DAD) will host the Controllers' Conference 2025 from July 7 to 9 at the Dr SK Kothari Auditorium, DRDO Bhawan, New Delhi. The conference will be inaugurated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on July 7, in the presence of top military and civilian leadership including Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan , the three service chiefs, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, Financial Adviser (Defence Services), S G Dastidar, and Controller General of Defence Accounts Mayank Sharma, marking it as a key platform for shaping the future of India's defence financial architecture said Ministry of Defence. A flagship forum for policy dialogue, strategic review, and institutional innovation, the Controllers' Conference brings together top leadership from DAD, the civil service, academia, think tanks, and stakeholders across the defence and finance sectors. It serves as a vital platform for evaluating challenges, initiating reform, and advancing the role of financial governance in defence preparedness. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trekking pants for mountain sports and adventure travel Trek Kit India Shop Now Undo The theme of this year's conference, 'Transforming Financial Advice, Payment, Audit and Accounting through Defence Finance and Economics,' reflects a paradigm shift within the department, repositioning DAD from a finance & accounts body to a future-ready institution focused on Defence Finance and Economics. This transformation, guided by the strategic vision articulated by the Raksha Mantri on October 01, 2024, is internally driven, inclusive, and aligned with emerging national security imperatives. The transition is anchored in DAD's new mission statement and Motto 'Alert, Agile, Adaptive' which will be formally released during the event. Live Events The conference will feature eight high-level business sessions (Manan Satras), covering areas such as budget and accounts reform, internal audit restructuring, collaborative research, pricing innovation, and capacity building. These sessions will explore the evolving role of Integrated Financial Advisors (IFAs) in balancing fiscal prudence with strategic support for a competitive and self-reliant defence industry. Managing a defence budget of Rs 26.8 lakh crore, including Rs 1.7 lakh crore dedicated to pensions, DAD plays a pivotal role in payroll, pension disbursement, audit, procurement pricing, and strategic financial advice. The MoD statement stated that over the past year, the department has made significant strides in digital transformation, with flagship reforms such as 'SAMPURNA': an AI-driven, end-to-end automation system for defence procurement and payments, which enhances transparency and agility. 'SPARSH' is now serving over 32 lakh pensioners. This digital platform has redefined pension delivery with transparency and accessibility. 'SPARSH VAN', a mobile outreach innovation launched in Tamil Nadu , delivering pension services directly to veterans' doorsteps and 'e-Raksha Awaas': Automated recovery of over Rs 500 crore in rent, generating Rs 2,700+ crore in rent bills. Defence Travel System (DTS) and AI-based procurement tools: Building a smarter, data-centric financial network for defence Since the last Controllers' Conference, DAD has conducted 206 outreach programmes and established over 200 service centres across India strengthening last-mile delivery and stakeholder engagement. Training and upskilling remain central to the transformation, with institutions like NADFM Pune and CENTRAD Delhi driving officer education in defence economics, data analytics, and digital resource management. DAD's audit functions are also evolving into advanced Management Information Systems (MIS) that provide early risk indicators, performance benchmarks, and decision-support frameworks. Aligned with the MoD's declaration of 2025 as the Year of Reform, the conference is expected to yield actionable outcomes that will fortify India's defence financial architecture--driven by Atmanirbhar Bharat and committed to maximum governance with minimum government. The deliberations will lay a robust fiscal foundation to strengthen national defence capabilities and ensure that financial systems are agile, responsive, and strategically aligned with India's long-term security goals.
