AAP pushing Punjab into financial ruin, says Congress leader Bajwa
Chandigarh: Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, on Tuesday accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government of pushing the state into financial ruin. Bajwa highlighted the government's reliance on heavy borrowing, warning that the state is on the brink of bankruptcy. 'The AAP government has drowned Punjab in debt over its three-year tenure. It now plans to borrow Rs 8,500 crore in the second quarter (July-September) of this fiscal year -- Rs 2,000 crore in July, Rs 3,000 crore in August, and Rs 3,500 crore in September. This reckless borrowing shows no regard for the state's financial health,' Bajwa said in a statement. He pointed out that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has appointed former IMF senior economist Arbind Modi as Chief Advisor and former World Bank economist Sebastian James as Advisor (Fiscal Affairs) to revive Punjab's struggling economy. However, Bajwa questioned the effectiveness of these appointments, stating, 'Is this the expertise that globally renowned economists are offering the AAP government? Even AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, who often boasts about his revenue management skills, has failed to support Punjab in its hour of need.' Bajwa noted that when AAP assumed power in 2022, Punjab's outstanding debt stood at Rs 281,773 crore. By the end of 2025-26, the debt is projected to reach Rs 400,000 crore, with economists estimating it could climb to Rs 450,000 crore by 2026-27, the final year of the AAP's term. 'The people of Punjab will bear the burden of this massive debt through heavy taxation. The AAP government will vanish from Punjab long before the next Assembly elections,' Bajwa warned. Contrary to the Congress leader's assertions, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema claimed that Punjab has seen a record-breaking 44.44 per cent growth in net Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections for June 2025 and a substantial 27.01 per cent growth for the first quarter of this fiscal, marking the highest-ever GST revenue growth in a fiscal quarter and for June in the state's history. He said the state has outpaced the national average in GST growth, firmly positioning itself among the top-performing states in tax mobilisation despite facing national and geopolitical challenges, including border-related tensions.

Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation sets record with Rs 522-crore property tax collection in 90 days
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has registered a record revenue collection by netting Rs 522.72 crore in property tax within the first quarter (April 1 to June 30) of the 2025–26 financial year. This is the first time the PCMC has crossed the Rs 500-crore mark in just 90 days, officials said on Tuesday. The significant rise in early payments was driven by a host of well-planned incentives and robust outreach. To encourage timely compliance, PCMC had announced multiple rebates valid up to June 30, including a 10 per cent concession on general tax for online payers. Over 4.12 lakh property owners availed of these benefits, resulting in record-breaking revenue, the property tax department said. A major contributor to this success was the PCMC's City Hub for Data Communication (CHDC) initiative, which enabled data-driven planning, real-time analysis of defaulters, and area-specific tax response patterns. 'This milestone is not just about revenue numbers—it reflects the growing trust and cooperation of Pimpri Chinchwad citizens. Strategic planning by the tax department, use of data through CHDC, door-to-door delivery of bills via self-help groups, and effective public communication have all contributed to crossing the Rs 522-crore mark in record time. I congratulate our tax-paying citizens, dedicated staff, officers, and the SHG women for this collective success,' Shekhar Singh, Municipal Commissioner, PCMC, said in a statement. Pradip Jambhale Patil, Additional Municipal Commissioner, PCMC, said the response to rebates announced until June 30 was phenomenal. 'Citizens were kept informed through tele-calling, digital messaging, and social media. The 10 per cent online rebate especially encouraged digital payments. We remain committed to further strengthening this momentum through transparent and citizen-friendly governance,' Patil added. Avinash Shinde, Assistant Commissioner (Tax), PCMC, said that the corporation had set a target to maximise tax collection in the first quarter. 'Along with outreach efforts, we mapped and followed up with defaulters from the past two years. Special arrangements were made to keep all 18 ward-level counters open even on public holidays in the last week of June. The collective effort of every team led to this remarkable outcome,' Shinde said. In FY 2021–22, the first-quarter collection stood at Rs 171.85 crore In FY 2022–23, it rose to Rs 253.65 crore In FY 2023–24, the figure surged to Rs 454 crore In FY 2024–25, it was at Rs 440 crore Now, in FY 2025–26, the collection has touched a new high of Rs 522.72 crore as of June 30 Women property owners: 17,459 Ex-servicemen: 4,023 Persons with disabilities: 1,897 Gallantry award recipients: 9 Environment-friendly properties: 24,869 Advance payers: 40,934 Online payers: 3,23,239 Wakad: 65.11 Thergaon: 47.52 Chikhali: 39.35 Kaspate Vasti: 37.60 Kiwale: 34.23 Bhosari : 33.95 Chinchwad: 33.03 Pimpri-Waghere: 32.84 Moshi: 30.53 PCMC headquarters : 28.22 Sangvi : 27.09 Akurdi: 24.33 Charholi: 16.37 Dighi-Bopkhel: 17.84 Talawade: 12.90 Nigdi Pradhikaran: 12.77 Fugewadi-Dapodi: 18.49 Pimpri Nagar: 4.24 Over Rs 380 crore collected through online payments Rs 30.63 crore via cash counters at 18 ward offices Rs 34.49 crore collected on June 30 alone Multiple modes such as RTGS, cheques, and cash
