Autorickshaw union plans to launch app to tackle refusal menace in Mumbai

Time of India2 days ago
The
Mumbai Rickshawmen's Union
on Sunday announced its plan to launch an app aimed at combating the refusal menace. The app will assure commuters of a ride and allow autorickshaw bookings while ensuring payment is made only by the RTO-approved meter.
Union leader Thampy Kurien, who proposed the idea to the
transport department
, is set to demonstrate it to officials at Mantralaya this week.
"Unlike Ola and Uber, our app will not calculate fares that are low, very high, or dynamic in nature. It will merely book an auto and ensure pickup from your doorstep or wherever you are waiting. After the pickup, the driver will flag down the meter and take you to the destination, collecting the actual fare as per the meter, " Kurien told TOI.
The union is also considering introducing a convenience charge, potentially a nominal Rs 5 per trip for app usage. It will seek MMRTA approval for any fare above the RTO-approved meter fare, said Kurien.
He explained that the app's necessity arises after a series of refusals by auto drivers. Police statistics indicate there were nearly 4.7 lakh challans in 2024 for refusals by autos and taxis, with auto refusals accounting for over 70%.
A senior transport official said they will review the app and, if it proves beneficial to commuters and auto drivers, there should be no issue in granting clearance.
Kurien further indicated that he plans to challenge Ola and Uber autorickshaws operations in the city in Bombay high court. These vehicles do not operate by the meter despite drivers possessing state badges and permits, which require that vehicles function "only by the meter". Uber and Ola officials were unavailable for comment.
Kurien also plans to petition the transport department to regulate autorickshaw operations outside railway stations. "At present, there are three different groups of autos – one which stands in queue and picks up passengers with no questions asked, the other which picks up while on the go, and a third group of cartel which parks autos at a distance and demands hefty share fares for popular destinations such as Linking Road, beaches, waterfronts, promenades, etc," he said.
"We want govt to have a single queue outside all railway stations. If autorickshaws do not want to join this queue, they will have to drop passengers and leave the station precincts immediately. Those in queue should observe discipline and ferry all passengers – short or long distance," he added.

CAG pulls up steel maker SAIL for over-consumption of imported coal

Steel maker SAIL consumed imported coal more than the permitted levels between 2016 and 2023, resulting in additional expenditure to the extent of Rs 2,539.68 crore, a CAG report has said. CAG also flagged that Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) had not fixed any benchmark for inventory carrying cost per tonne of raw material, semi-finished material and finished goods. This happened despite the fact that on an average, SAIL had an inventory of Rs 21,698 crore during 2016-17 to 2022-23, constituting about 67 per cent of its current assets, the CAG report said. As per the report titled 'Inventory Management in SAIL', the company's "steel plants consumed imported coal more than the norms fixed by the management". "Higher consumption of imported coal which was costlier than the indigenous coal resulted in potential additional expenditure to the extent of Rs 2,539.68 crore during 2016-2023," the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report said. The report of the CAG of India on Performance Audit on 'Inventory Management in SAIL' (Audit Report No. 10 of 2025) was presented in Parliament on Tuesday. SAIL failed to maintain stock levels of raw materials like iron ore, coke, sinter due to which blast furnace was put under off-blast state resulting in inability to produce hot metal of 9.32 lakh tonnes and to earn potential revenue of Rs 1,231.52 crore at Rourkela, Bokaro, and Durgapur Steel Plants, as per the report. SAIL could not maintain the norms for non-moving inventory, it said, adding that total non-moving inventory of stores and spares at SAIL plants increased from Rs 137.40 crore in 2016-17 to Rs 212.57 crore in 2022-23, registering an increase of Rs 75.17 crore (55 per cent). Excess procurement of inventory without considering the requirement resulted in blocking-up of capital in non-moving items. SAIL plants took more days than the stipulated time of six months (186 days) between raising of indent by the department concerned and placement of purchase order in 9.71 per cent cases during 2016-2023. Five integrated steel plants of SAIL could produce 106.15 million tonnes (89 per cent) of the production target of 119.66 million tonne of saleable steel envisaged in the annual business plan for 2016-2023. The capacity utilisation by these steel plants was between 77 per cent (2020-21) and 89 per cent (2022-23). As against total production of 106.15 million tonne of saleable steel and orders booked by central marketing organisation for 121.86 million tonne, despatches from plants were only 93.75 million tonne, i.e. 77 per cent of orders booked, the report said. Lower despatch of materials than the requirement of customers led to delay in liquidation of stock and increase in inventory carrying cost on the stock lying at steel plants, it added.

Hyundai Q1 FY26 profit down 8.1% amid weak demand, macro headwinds

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) on Wednesday reported an 8.1 per cent year-on-year decline in consolidated net profit to Rs 1,362.3 crore in the first quarter of FY26, impacted by sluggish domestic demand, weak hatchback sales, a tense geopolitical situation and macroeconomic uncertainty. Hyundai also noted a structural shift in consumer preference towards compact SUVs over entry-level hatchbacks, which has affected segment volumes. Despite cost pressures, HMIL managed to maintain an EBITDA margin of 13.3 per cent, supported by a rise in exports, higher CNG penetration, and disciplined pricing. 'The prolonged softness in demand, driven by macro challenges and global uncertainties, continued to weigh on market sentiment,' said Unsoo Kim, managing director, HMIL. 'However, we remained focused on expanding our rural presence, updating our product line-up, and enhancing brand competitiveness,' he added. Rural markets accounted for 23 per cent of Hyundai's domestic volumes during the quarter — the company's highest-ever rural penetration. 'The hatchback segment is shrinking — it has dropped from 46 per cent of the passenger vehicle market in FY21 to just 21 per cent in Q1,' said Tarun Garg, chief operating officer, HMIL. 'What we're seeing is a clear shift. Instead of small cars, buyers are opting for entry-level SUVs like the Exter. These offer better space, stronger road presence, and align with evolving customer aspirations,' he noted. Garg added that the share of first-time buyers in Hyundai's sales continues to rise, and the contribution of SUVs in rural areas also mirrors the national trend. 'Even in rural markets, SUVs account for 68 per cent of our sales. The myth that rural customers prefer only small cars is changing.' Hyundai's discount levels during the quarter stood at 3.4 per cent — below the industry average. 'We don't see discounts going up,' said Garg. 'In fact, depending on the festive momentum, they may hold or come down.' Hyundai said that while macroeconomic concerns — including the Indo-Pak situation, the Iran-Israel conflict, and tariff uncertainties — had not directly impacted sales, the overall environment remained volatile. He expressed optimism about the second half of the fiscal year. 'We are entering the festive season early this year, with Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi. The impact of recent RBI rate cuts and income tax relief will likely be visible in H2, as salaried customers plan their spending,' he said. 'Forty-four per cent of our buyers are salaried, and we expect the benefits to start reflecting in demand.' On the export front, Hyundai saw a 13 per cent increase in volumes, with exports accounting for 27 per cent of its overall sales mix. The company said it has seen broad-based growth across emerging markets, reinforcing India's role as a global manufacturing hub. 'We are not facing any shortage of rare earth magnets,' said K S Hariharan, head of investor relations, HMIL, during the earnings conference call. 'We continue to work with our vendors to ensure supply continuity,' Hariharan added. Hyundai has also commenced engine production at its newly acquired Pune facility, which will support both Pune and Chennai operations and improve production efficiency. The company will host its first Investor Day on October 15, where it plans to detail its product roadmap, including 26 new launches by FY30 and its strategy for powertrain diversification. SUVs accounted for 68 per cent of Hyundai's total domestic sales during the quarter — significantly higher than the industry average of 54 per cent. The Creta retained its leadership in the mid-size SUV segment, supported in part by the introduction of its EV variant.
