Taiwan accuses China of endangering aviation safety with illegal flight corridor
According to Focus Taiwan, China announced on Sunday the opening of the northwest-to-southeast W121 route, linking Dongshan in Zhejiang Province to the M503 flight path in the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) immediately criticized the move as provocative, warning it undermines aviation safety and regional stability.
Taiwan's Civil Aviation Administration echoed MAC's concerns, describing the decision as 'regrettable' and vowing to monitor the situation to ensure flight safety. The agency stressed that China's failure to coordinate with Taiwan on such a significant adjustment violates ICAO standards, which mandate prior consultation with affected parties.
As per Taipei Times, this is not the first time China has acted unilaterally, citing previous route launches like W122 and W123, which were introduced alongside the eastward shift of the M503 in early 2024. Countries including the United States, Canada, Japan, Sweden, and the Netherlands had previously expressed concern over similar actions by Beijing.
Focus Taiwan noted that Taiwan will again leverage the upcoming 42nd ICAO Assembly in Montreal to challenge Beijing's actions and press for greater inclusion in international aviation forums.
Despite protests, W122 and W123 remain active, underscoring that diplomatic pressure alone may not be enough to compel Beijing to comply with ICAO norms.
Taiwan, which last attended an ICAO assembly in 2013, remains excluded due to pressure from Beijing. The government reiterated its call to be included in ICAO to help safeguard global aviation safety.
Taiwanese authorities emphasized that exclusion from ICAO not only marginalizes Taiwan but also undermines global aviation safety by leaving a critical player out of essential coordination.
As China continues to bypass established norms, Taipei warned that unchecked unilateral actions could escalate regional instability. Taiwan reaffirmed its commitment to working with international partners to uphold safety, transparency, and rule-based order in the skies. (ANI)

New Delhi [India], 25 July (ANI): Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman honoured several Income Tax officers for their exceptional contributions to the department during the celebration of the 166th Income Tax Day, recognising decades of service in modernising India's tax administration. The ceremony, held on Thursday, highlighted the transformation of the Income Tax Department from manual processes to AI-driven systems, with the Finance Minister acknowledging officers who have been instrumental in driving these changes across their careers spanning over two decades. Chief Commissioner Surbhi Ahluwalia received special recognition for her remarkable three-decade career that has set new benchmarks in tax administration. Her leadership spans multiple critical areas including field operations, policy reform, complex litigation management, and innovative taxpayer outreach initiatives. Ahluwalia's most notable contribution has been her groundbreaking work in modernising the department's communication strategy. As the longest-serving media coordinator of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), she pioneered and led the department's strategic foray into structured social media usage, transforming how the Income Tax Department engages with taxpayers and addresses their grievances. Her leadership in official language cadre reforms has also been instrumental in making tax processes more accessible to diverse linguistic communities across India. Chief Commissioner Anurag Sahai received the Certificate of Meritorious Service for his outstanding contributions to administrative and infrastructure reforms. His achievements include developing and establishing the Central Processing Centre in Bengaluru and strengthening preventive vigilance as Chief Vigilance Officer of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. Sahai also executed India's first equalisation levy survey in international taxation, modernised exemption processes, and represented India at international anti-corruption and tax forums. Director General Investigation Manoj Pandey was recognised for his diverse contributions across the Income Tax Department, UPSC, Department of Expenditure, and Competition Commission of India. His notable achievements include establishing the Income Tax Office in Gandhinagar within two months of posting and conducting successful search and seizure operations while contributing significantly to antitrust case investigations. The Finance Minister specially felicitated the team behind the groundbreaking nudge campaign that boosted voluntary compliance on foreign assets and income. The team included Sitesh Varma (Joint Commissioner, CBDT Delhi), Harshit Bansal (Joint Commissioner, Karnal), and Avnish Giri (Income Tax Inspector, CBDT Delhi). Through their data-driven, non-intrusive outreach approach, the team successfully encouraged over 30,000 taxpayers to voluntarily declare foreign assets and income worth more than Rs 1,089 crore--an achievement previously recognised by the Finance Minister in the Parliament. In addition to these prominent recognitions, numerous other officers across various ranks were also awarded for their exemplary work and dedication to the department's mission. 'The Tax Administration has not just responded to change--we have driven it,' Ravi Agarwal, Chairman, CBDT stated, highlighting the shift from manual files to AI-driven insights, physical scrutiny to faceless assessments, and basic enforcement to a trust-based system. The nudge campaign exemplifies this transformation, using behavioral insights and transactional data to detect discrepancies in undisclosed income, incorrect deductions, or high-risk claims. Rather than launching complex compliance measures immediately, the system enables taxpayers to voluntarily review and update their filings. 'This is enforcement with empathy, reflecting the department's evolving mindset to trust first,' Agarwal explained. The Chairman revealed that work is underway on the new Income Tax Bill 2025, developed entirely in-house without external consultants. The department is currently drafting rules, forms, and procedures that will define how the new law functions in practice. 'Just like the bill, these will reflect our shared commitment to clarity, simplicity, and taxpayer convenience,' Agarwal assured. Operating across 583 stations nationwide--from small districts to major metros--the department's officers and staff have consistently delivered despite infrastructure challenges and limited resources in many areas. At 50-year diplomatic milestone, EU slams China's repression in Tibet, cites Dalai Lama succession interference
Brussels [Belgium], July 25 (ANI): At the 25th EU-China Summit held in Beijing on July 24, 2025, the European Union raised strong concerns regarding the worsening human rights situation in Tibet, marking yet another clear signal that Tibet remains a key point of contention in EU-China relations, the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) reported. The summit, which also commemorated 50 years of EU-China diplomatic ties, brought together top-level leaders, including European Council President Antonio Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas, and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Despite a focus on a range of bilateral and global issues, the EU ensured that Tibet remained firmly on the agenda, citing systemic rights abuses and interference in religious freedoms. According to the CTA, the EU referenced its June 2025 Human Rights Dialogue in Brussels, where it had already expressed concerns about China's actions in Tibet, particularly the CCP's interference in the succession of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The EU underscored that this spiritual process must be determined solely by Tibetan Buddhist traditions, free from political manipulation. In the July 24 summit, the EU also highlighted the repression of Tibetan human rights defenders and the widespread curtailment of freedoms of expression, religion, and movement across Tibet. Specific individual cases involving detained or disappeared Tibetan figures were also raised, reinforcing the EU's position that such violations must cease. The CTA reported that while the summit was framed by diplomatic gestures, the inclusion of Tibet once again illustrated the persistence of moral and political divides between Brussels and Beijing. Representative Rigzin Genkhang of the Office of Tibet in Brussels welcomed the attention, noting, 'This acknowledgement is important, but we must now push for concrete benchmarks to ensure accountability.' The CTA emphasised that the EU's continued engagement on Tibetan issues is a critical tool for amplifying Tibetan voices on the international stage, especially as China tightens its grip inside occupied Tibet. India open to sharing AI models with Global South: S Krishnan, MeitY Secretary
New Delhi [India], July 25 (ANI): India is open to sharing its artificial intelligence models with the Global South, S Krishnan, Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, said at FICCI's conference Bhashantara 2025 on Friday. Speaking at the conference, the secretary emphasised that India's Language Technology ecosystem is so diverse that it has the potential to lead global AI development, stating, 'If you can do it in India, you can do it practically anywhere else in the world.' India's intent to share AI models with the Global South stems from discussions with UN officials, who expressed interest in the country's collaborative approach to artificial intelligence development. It positions India as a potential alternative to other AI ecosystems, offering solutions designed explicitly for multilingual, resource-constrained environments. The government's India AI Mission has established AI Kosh, a data repository containing more than 400 databases, designed to support researchers and entrepreneurs developing multilingual AI solutions. Krishnan highlighted Mission Bhashini and Anuvadini as key programmes advancing language technology, with particular emphasis on capturing regional dialects rather than just major languages. India is also digitising traditional knowledge, including Ayurvedic texts and historical manuscripts, to create comprehensive datasets for global healthcare and research communities. Unlike other nations that rely solely on state or private funding, India's approach encourages multi-stakeholder participation across academia, industry and research institutions. Industry leaders at the conference outlined specific requirements to accelerate India's multilingual AI capabilities whilst committing to enhanced private sector contributions. Harsh Dhand, Research and AI Partnerships APAC lead at Google and Co-Chair of FICCI's Multilingual Internet Committee, presented three key requests to government: unlocking historical data from institutions like Prasar Bharathi and All India Radio, broadening the definition of 'Make in India' to 'Made in India by India for India,' and, connecting research entities to prevent duplication of efforts and better resource utilization. Dhand also outlined that the industry must contribute through access to technology, seed funding for startups and academia, and skilling. The conference highlighted India's progress in democratising internet access through local language domain names, with Ajay Data, Chairman of FICCI's Multilingual Internet and Universal Acceptance Committee, noting that domain names are now available in all official Indian languages. With more than 6 billion people globally not speaking English as their primary language and India home to 19,500 languages and dialects, Data emphasised the vast commercial opportunities that lay ahead. Sandeep Nulkar, Co-Chair of FICCI's Multilingual Internet Committee and Founder of BITS Technologies, emphasised the conference's significance in concluding remarks: 'We are no longer debating the possibility of a multilingual internet. We are actually mobilising around its urgency, not only in an academic manner, but also in a demographic and development and economic perspective.' (ANI)
