‘Looteri Dulhan' cons Alwar family, decamps with cash, jewellery soon after wedding; 7 held

Time of India08-06-2025
Prayagraj: The dreams of an Alwar-based family, who solemnised the wedding of their son in Sangam City on Thursday, turned into a nightmare on the same evening. What began as a celebration of love and new beginnings quickly spiralled into a chilling tale of betrayal, deception and theft.
The bride vanished hours after the ceremony, with cash and jewellery.
On Thursday, during the return of baraat to Alwar from the city, the bride stepped out of the car on the pretext of attending nature's call near a petrol pump and escaped. The groom and family searched for the bride and later approached Khuldabad police to lodge a complaint. However, when the family of the groom showed documents, including the Aadhaar card of the bride, to the police, all of them were found to be fake.
Khuldabad police inspector Surendra Verma told TOI, "Akbarpur (Alwar) based Gopal Gujar approached the police on Friday and narrated that he had solemnised his son's marriage at a local temple in Prayagraj and the bride went missing on same day during the return of the baraat."
He also complained that the family of the bride had taken Rs 1.75 lakh from him on the pretext of arranging marriage and gave fake documents, including Aadhaar card.
After lodging the FIR under the appropriate sections of BNS, cops were stunned to know that the 'looteri dulhan', was a mother of four kids and had a list of fake relatives.
The SHO claimed that the groom's family also paid Rs 20,000 to a Rajasthan-based broker who facilitated the match, claiming the bride came from a poor background and needed help with wedding expenses. The marriage was held at a local temple in the city with full fanfare, with all traditional customs and rituals.
Investigations helped the police to bust an interstate 'looteri dulhan' gang and arrest seven of its members, including four 'looteri dulhans', near Ghanshyam Nagar railway crossing on Saturday evening while planning to escape.
Police also seized six fake Aadhaar cards and Rs 35,000 from them.
The arrested persons were identified as Shahana (32) of Tulsi Nagar, Nisha (35) of Peepalgav, Mamta Bhartiya (30) of Jhunsi, Preeti Devi (34) of Peepalgav, Aashif Khan (27) of Shahganj, Mohd Junail (56) of Darashah Ajmal, and Shri Ram Gurjar (31) of Alwar.
The SHO said Shri Ram Gurjar was the broker who brought family to Prayagraj for marriage of Gopal Gurjar's son.
He showed the photo of Shahana, a widow and mother of four kids, and told the family her name was Preeti. When cops checked the details of the Aadhaar card given by the bride, she was found to be Shahana, wife of the late Gulam Nabi. She managed to get a fake Aadhaar card in the name of Preeti.
When cops dealt with Shahana strictly, she spilled the beans and exposed the entire racket, admitting to cheating more than 20 men.
Interestingly, after the 'bidai' of the bride was done, the gang members used to chase the car of the bride and managed to take her back whenever vehicles stopped at a petrol pump for refuelling or the bride asked to attend a nature's call. If this modus operandi failed, they would reach the groom's house within two days of the wedding and insist on 'bidai'.
The racketeers were perfect in playing their roles and responsibilities. While 56-year-old Mohd Zunail used to play the role of the father, Ashrif was assigned the role of the brother. Similarly, Shahana, Nisha, Mamta, and Preeti (who were already married) used to play the role of brides. Investigations also revealed that all racketeers had fake Aadhaar cards, and the relatives who attended the wedding as her maternal uncle and aunt were impostors.
Cops, however, suspect the involvement of a larger gang operating similar cons and are now pursuing leads to identify and apprehend the culprits.

Staged gun attack for police cover backfires, four held in Sangrur

In a bizarre incident, a Sangrur man allegedly staged an attack on himself with the help of his brother-in-law and three hired 'shooters' to gain police protection and flaunt influence, only for the stunt to backfire and land his accomplices behind the bars. The mastermind, Milanjot Singh, a preacher and resident of Sherpur, is still on the run, police said. (HT) The mastermind, Milanjot Singh, a preacher and resident of Sherpur, is still on the run, police said. Sangrur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Sartaj Singh Chahal said on July 29, Milanjot filed a complaint, stating that around 9 pm the previous night, he and his brother-in-law Jaswinder Singh were returning home from Mohali in separate cars. Meanwhile, a Maruti Suzuki Ciaz car started following them. As they reached home and parked their cars, three unidentified individuals in the Ciaz fired at Jaswinder's car, before fleeing, Milanjot alleged. Following his complaint, police had lodged an FIR under Section 324 (4) (mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant sections of the Arms Act. However, as the probe deepened, police discovered that Milanjot and Jaswinder concocted a fake attack, planning and executing the entire incident. They allegedly paid the three 'shooters' ₹1.20 lakh to carry out the firing. Cracking the case, police arrested the 'shooters', along with Jaswinder, while Milanjot, the primary conspirator, is absconding. Police also recovered a .32-bore pistol, two live cartridges, one empty shell casing, the Ciaz car used in the incident, and ₹50,000 in cash. Following the revelations, police added Sections 217 (false information), 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 25, 26 (act not intended to cause death, done by consent in good faith for person's benefit) and 61 (2) (criminal conspiracy) of the BNS to the FIR. Deputy superintendent of police Devinder Attri said the four arrested men were on police remand, and efforts were on to recover the pending amount and arrest Milanjot.

Corrupt officials misplace records to evade law: Lokayukta special court

BENGALURU: Corrupt public servants of local bodies are deliberately misplacing original records of the scams they are involved in to escape the clutches of law, stated the special court for Lokayukta cases while rejecting the anticipatory bail petition filed by a former assistant executive engineer (AEE), Karnataka Housing Board (KHB), B Sector, Yelahanka Upanagar in the city. The accused No. 1, Syed Azgar, who was with the KHB Planning Division, has been booked by the Lokayukta police for his alleged involvement in the illegal sale of KHB sites and causing losses of crores of rupees to the exchequer. 'In the recent past, the officials from various local bodies like the KHB have been involved in such illegalities without bearing the minimum responsibilities of their position, existing rules, regulations and the law for their own reasons with the help of mediators, anti-social elements and other stakeholders. Most unfortunate are the acts of corrupt public servants in deliberately misplacing the original records after committing such illegalities (as in this case) so as to escape their criminal liabilities,' said Judge KM Radhakrishna. He said a similar fraud committed in respect of site No. 239, HIG in B Sector strengthens the involvement not only of this accused, but also of other officers from KHB in the scam. The accused, apprehending arrest by the Lokayukta police, contended before the special court that his higher officials, after having misplaced the original record, are attempting to shift the blame upon him. The Lokayukta police have registered a case based on a complaint filed by social worker KS Chandrashekar Azad against Azgar and two others. He alleged that the residential site No.271, MIG, A Sector at Yelahanka Upanagar, was allotted to Satish Harini, the third accused. Azgar, having joined hands with Govindaiah, the second accused, created fake documents with the intention of wrongful gain. Based on those documents, he sold and illegally executed the sale deed of the site on October 23, 2020, in favour of Govindaiah and caused Rs 10 lakh loss to KHB, Azad stated. Opposing bail, the prosecution contended that the material on record exposes the direct involvement of the petitioner along with others and demanded his custodial interrogation.

ED raids against Bengaluru group in homebuyers ‘fraud' case

Bengaluru: The Enforcement Directorate on Friday conducted searches against a Bengaluru-based real estate company and its promoters who are accused of duping home buyers worth crores of rupees in the name of selling them flats in their residential project, official sources said. At least ten premises of Ozone Urbana Developers Pvt. Ltd. and its key management personnel were raided in Bangalore and Mumbai under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said. The main promoter of the group is Satyamoorthi Vasudevan. The company and its promoters were booked by the ED after taking cognisance of multiple police FIRs registered against them related to a residential project named Ozone Urbana in Devanahalli Taluk of Bengaluru. The integrated township project was to be handed over to buyers in 2018. However, till 2024, only 49 per cent of the project was completed, the sources said. The company 'failed' to hand over the project and has neither returned the money to the buyers, they claimed. It is alleged that the accused company and its key management personnel 'cheated' gullible home buyers by promising to pay their bank EMIs (taken for purchase of homes) until completion of the project. The company also promised many buyers 'huge' discounts, if they pay full amount in advance against the bookings and it also allegedly lured them with a 'buyback scheme'. It is alleged that the directors of the said company cheated its buyers collectively to the tune of hundreds of crores and misappropriated the funds, the ED sources said.
