Slot sanguine after Liverpool exit in ‘best game of football I've ever been involved in'

The Guardian12-03-2025
Arne Slot described Liverpool's Champions League exit as the finest game of his career after Paris Saint‑Germain stunned Anfield with victory in a penalty shootout.
The Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma proved the decisive figure in the last-16 second leg with penalty saves from Darwin Núñez and Curtis Jones. The game had gone to extra time and penalties after Ousmane Dembélé's winner cancelled out Liverpool's first‑leg lead from Paris. PSG converted all four of their penalties in a flawless shootout display.
Slot admitted he was shocked by Liverpool's exit but could not have asked for more from his team. 'That was the best game of football I've ever been involved in,' the Liverpool head coach said. 'Two teams of an incredible level and intensity, it was unbelievable what we showed in the first 25 minutes. Over 90 minutes I don't think we deserved to lose. Over 180 minutes maybe it was deserved that it went to overtime and in overtime I thought maybe PSG were better than us. Then it comes down to penalties and they scored four.
'Of course it is shock but if you have to go out, go out the way we did against one of the best teams in Europe and by making such a fight of it. I hope every fan around the world was hoping this game wouldn't stop because it was incredible. For us it is so unlucky to finish No 1 in the group and then face PSG.'
Liverpool are likely to be without Trent Alexander-Arnold for the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle on Sunday after he was forced off with an injury. Ibrahima Konaté was also withdrawn but Slot confirmed that was due to fatigue.
Luis Enrique, the PSG head coach, hailed the victory as a momentous step for his team as they attempt to win the club's first Champions League title. 'I think it is really significant moment for us, for the players and the supporters,' he said.
'Either of the two teams could have gone through. We both deserved to go through but we deserved it slightly more, especially in the first game.
'We showed what sort of team we are. We have huge strength of character, personality, and we are a team who go out to play their own football.

'There were times when Liverpool had the upper hand and were slightly better than us but we never gave up attacking and we put in a top performance, which was what we needed to do. The first game belonged to Alisson, the second game belonged to Donnarumma.'

Rio Ferdinand tips Man Utd transfer flop to be 'like a new signing' this season

Rio Ferdinand is confident that one of Erik ten Hag's big-money signings will revive his Manchester United fortunes this season under Ruben Amorim. It has been another summer of rebuilding for the Red Devils after a dismal Premier League campaign which saw them finish a lowly 15th. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have arrived through the door to try and provide an attacking spark, while United are also hopeful of beating Newcastle United to the signing of Benjamin Sesko. But new signings alone will not be enough to inspire a turnaround at Old Trafford, and Amorim will have to get a better tune out of several players already at the club. And Ferdinand is hopeful that Mason Mount can step up and take on that responsibility after his latest impressive display in United's pre-season draw with Everton on Sunday. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. Mount started just 13 league games across his first two seasons at United in large part due to his consistent struggles with injury. But now, with a proper pre-season behind him, Ferdinand believes Mount could prove as good as a new signing for Amorim if he is able to put his injury woes behind him. 'I saw him out in Chicago and one of the things I said to him was, 'How are you feeling?' Ferdinand told talkSPORT. 'Because he's been robbed of any minutes really for injury. It's been really really disappointing to see. 'Being injured and in the shadows, I never had that at a new club. That is so depressing. It can take your soul away at times. 'I'm sure he's been in some dark moments. He will be like a new signing. I think this is no surprise. 'Whenever he's been fit in his career he's played, at Chelsea especially. Managers have played him when they won the Champions League. 'He was one of the most important players. He has the quality. He has the work ethic. He has the legs. 'He has the ability to be a really really good top player. I just hope he gets the time to play minutes to show himself.' More Trending Amorim was also keen to sing Mount's praises after his display against Everton, and is confident that the midfielder will hit the ground running in the new season. 'Yeah [Mount will carry this form],' Amorim said. 'Because he does everything 100%, every training, every game, he's always the same player. 'That is the only thing for you to maintain the consistency. He works a lot.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Benjamin Sesko transfer deadline emerges as Man Utd and Newcastle make huge bids

Slovenia star Benjamin Sesko is expected to make his preference for his next club clear later tonight as RB Leipzig receive almost matching offers from Premier League giants The coming hours are set to be decisive regarding the future of Benjamin Sesko with the RB Leipzig striker set to inform his current club whether he would prefer a move to Manchester United or Newcastle. ‌ Both Premier League clubs have been locked in a tug of war over the Slovenia centre forward and have submitted similar bids that Leipzig are evaluating. ‌ But latest reports suggest that the decision will ultimately come down to which club Sesko would rather turn out for this season - and Sesko is now expected to confirm his intentions by tonight. ‌ Earlier on Tuesday it emerged that United formally submitted a bid of £73.8m for the 22-year-old, speeding up the process that will see him leave the Bundesliga outfit. Newcastle were first to lodge a formal bid that was rejected. Following talks with the Bundesliga club, Eddie Howe's side submitted an improved offer of £69.5m plus £8.6m in add-ons on Monday. There are added considerations however that could also end up impacting Premier League champions Liverpool. Should Sesko decide to move to Old Trafford instead of St James' Park it would increase the chances of Alexander Isak remaining with the Toon despite expressing his desire to explore new opportunities amid interest from Anfield. Although the Toon's asking price remains some way higher than what the Premier League champions appear willing to pay having last week had a first bid rejected. Isak has not featured in pre-season for Newcastle with the club citing a thigh injury, though he has also taken himself to the facilities of former club Real Sociedad for a mini training camp. United, on the other hand, want to upgrade on Rasmus Hojlund, who's available for just £30m after two difficult seasons at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have already signed two forwards this summer, bringing in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo for a combined £133.5m from Wolves and Brentford. That is despite the club not being in Europe this season, while it remains unclear how motivated Sesko is around the chance of participating in this season's Champions League for Newcastle.
