Man who attempted to pervert course of justice after raping partner jailed for 10 years

has been jailed for 10 years.
The man (54), who cannot be named to protect the victim's identity, was found guilty by a jury of raping and sexually assaulting the woman on March 13th, 2024. He was also convicted of one count of assault causing harm on the same date.
The man pleaded guilty on a separate bill on June 18th this year to attempting to pervert the course of justice after he tried to halt the prosecution by calling the woman's friend from a prison landline to get the victim to withdraw her complaint.

heard he has 13 previous convictions including road-traffic offences and public-order breaches.

The court was told he had a problem with alcohol and, when questioned by gardaí, denied raping the victim and put the blame on her, saying she drank too much.
Sentencing the man on Tuesday, Ms Justice Mary Ellen Ring said that among the aggravating factors was his attitude when questioned.
'It is noted that the evidence of difficulty with alcohol is all at the door of [the accused] as confirmed by his previous convictions,' she said.
The shifting of blame, his untrue suggestion the two were planning to marry and breaching of court orders showed an unwillingness to take personal responsibility for his actions. They were are all aggravating features in the case, the judge said.
Garda Edward Hammond told the court the victim advertised for a lodger who would help with the rent.
The accused moved in and they formed an intimate relationship.
The victim said when she first met the man in July 2023 he was polite and courteous. He then changed and she suggested ending the relationship as alcohol appeared more frequently.
The accused was intoxicated and in March 2024 the victim asked him to leave. He refused and when she said she was leaving, he assaulted her and put his hand around her neck in a choking mechanism.
He brought her to the ground, kicked her in the legs and dragged her to a bedroom where he vaginally raped her. The court heard he also digitally penetrated her and he was shouting at and threatening her.
The court heard the victim does not have good English but late in the evening of March 18th she attended the Garda station.
The accused was arrested and he denied raping or sexually assaulting the victim. He told gardaí he and the woman were planning to get married and were also planning on holidaying together. He said she started drinking and this caused changes in her.
The victim did not want to attend court and made a victim-impact statement which Patrick Gageby SC, prosecuting, read.
She said he 'changed my life for the worse. I now live in constant fear for the sake of my life and my family.'

This man is accused of attacking a Garda with a two foot long samurai sword - and shouting: 'I will f*****g kill you all.' Zbigniew Pisula (45), with an address at Drimnagh Park, Ballyogan Road in Dublin, appeared before a special sitting of Dublin's District Court today charged with assaulting a Garda, possession of a samurai sword, and resisting arrest under the Public Order Act. The court heard how gardai were alerted via a 999 call to a man allegedly walking through a housing estate at Clay Farm in Ballyogan, with a large samurai sword in the early hours of Sunday morning. Click here to sign up and get it delivered to your inbox every week Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Detective Garda Shane Donovan of Blackrock Garda Station told the court that the accused man responded with the words 'not guilty' when charged with each alleged offence after caution. He further told the court that gardai were preparing a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions on the matter for direction. He told the court that the maximum sentence on conviction for the alleged section three assault is ten years imprisonment. In objecting to bail the Detective outlined the nature of the alleged incident to the court. He stated that officers immediately responded to a public 999 call and observed a man walking around the housing estate with a samurai sword. Detective Gda Donovan said unarmed gardai told the accused man to 'drop the sword' but he took a 'combative stance' and refused - allegedly brandishing the weapon 'in a menacing way' and swinging it towards an officer. A garda took evasive action, he said, and pepper spray was deployed but did not have any effect. Armed gardai were called to the incident and pursued the accused who is alleged to have fled on foot as officers shouted 'armed gardai' and 'drop the weapon' at him. The Detective told the court that the accused man ran across a green area into the front garden of a home of a family with a small child. He is alleged to have raised the sword, which was attached to a chord on his wrist, preventing him from being able to drop it. Armed gardai drew their firearms and made verbal demands to the accused to disarm himself - and he failed to do so, the Detective told the court. The accused man is alleged to have told officers at the scene 'I will f*****g kill you all,' and 'f*****g kill me. You will all f*****g die,' and 'shoot me.' He is alleged to have continued to say 'I will kill you,' before gardai swarmed him and made an effort to remove the sword. In making an effort to remove the sword one Garda received cuts to his hand from the weapon, the court heard - while the accused was trying to free himself and was 'actively resisting.' At this point in court the accused man, who was sitting in the dock dressed in a white t shirt shouted and said 'I can't hear my charges.' The presiding Judge intervened and told those present in court to be silent. Detective Gda Donovan said the samurai sword was seized - and that it is a two foot two long blade. He further stated that the alleged incident was captured on CCTV from a house across the road. The accused man was arrested and detained and interviewed in Dundrum Garda station, where he is alleged to have told officers he was doing 'Kung Fu' training in the Clay Farm area at the time. He stated he was defending himself when gardai approached him. Gardai objected to bail arguing there was a danger to the life and personal safety of the community - and that the accused allegedly admitted possession of the weapon. The alleged weapon was also shown in court by the Detective - who argued there had been a disregard for the safety of the public in what was a built up residential area - and that the accused waved the weapon at officers who were standing only a few feet away. Gardai had made numerous pleas for him to disarm himself, the Detective stated - and a Garda received a cut to his hand in what was a very volatile and dangerous situation. He further alleged that the accused man told Gardai he often trains with weapons in public. A solicitor for the accused argued for bail - stating that she did not believe the threshold under the act was met. The presiding Judge refused bail, pointing to Gardai stating the degree and seriousness of the alleged offence. He stated that the accused had been 'caught red handed' and was captured by Gardai committing the alleged offence. The court was satisfied, he said of the evidence and that the accused tried to evade Gardai and that his conduct amounted to a potential danger to life. The accused was remanded into custody - to appear again before a sitting of the court via video link on Wednesday. Veronica Guerin killer being granted day trips out of prison every few weeks
Veronica Guerin's killer Brian Meehan is being freed from jail every few weeks, we can reveal. Prison sources say the 58-year-old has been let out on temporary day release seven to eight times in recent months. The day trips have been sanctioned by the new Independent Parole Board in a bid to rehabilitate Meehan back into civilian life. It's understood he visits family and friends on each day of freedom and must return to Shelton Abbey Open Prison, Co Wicklow, where he is being detained by 7pm each evening. It is understood he is also looking for a job and would like to work in the gardening/horticultural sector. He is the only man convicted for the murder of journalist Veronica and has served 25 years behind bars. He was given a life sentence in July 1999. Holland shot her six times at point blank range as she sat at traffic lights in her car on the Naas dual carriageway. The hit was ordered by John Gilligan and neither he nor Holland were ever convicted of the murder. Holland later died in an English prison while serving a sentence for other offences. The Independent Parole Board has not given Meehan a date for his release yet. However, prison sources expect him to be freed by Christmas as his number of day releases increase. Veronica's heartbroken family are not happy about Meehan getting back out on the streets but privately accept there is very little they can do about it. They have continued to lobby both the Government and the Parole Board to stop it happening. A Government source said: 'The last thing we want is Brian Meehan being free and back on the streets but there is very little that we can do about it. 'He has done 25 years in jail and only the Independent Parole Board can decide when he gets out. The decision is out of our hands I'm afraid.' Meehan has been ordered not to have any contact with his former boss Gilligan or any other criminals. He now spends most of his days at Shelton Abbey playing golf on the small course at its site. The incident happened last night when officers tried to stop a vehicle outside Dundalk, Co Louth. Advertisement The driver refused to come to a halt and deliberately drove into them, damaging the patrol car. The officers involved were not physically harmed and an investigation is now under way. Cops are now appealing for witnesses to contact them. In a statement, they said: 'At approximately 8.30pm on Saturday, members of the Louth Roads Policing Unit were on patrol as part of our Bank Holiday weekend road safety operation, when they were involved in a serious incident. "When they attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver deliberately drove into and caused damage to the patrol car, showing a reckless disregard for garda safety.' Separately, a young man has been airlifted to hospital after he was seriously injured in a single-vehicle collision yesterday. Gardaí have carried out an examination of the scene and the road has now been reopened. In a statement this afternoon, a spokesperson for the force urged anyone who may have witnessed the collision to come forward.
