Aravind Eye Hospital founder Dr Namperumalsamy dies at 85
Born in an agricultural family in 1940, Dr Namperumalsamy started his career at Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai. In 1967, he established India's first Low Vision Aid Clinic. He specialised in vitreous surgery in the USA. In 1979, Dr Namperumalsamy started the Retina Vitreous Clinic at Aravind Eye Hospital.
He also founded the GOVEL Trust which runs Aravind Eye Hospital & Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology. He launched Aravind Eye Hospital with a mission to eliminate blindness by providing high-quality, compassionate and affordable eye care to all. Dr Namperumalsamy was conferred the Padma Shri in 2007.
Governor R N Ravi, Chief Minister M K Stalin and several leaders expressed condolences over the passing of Dr Namperumalsamy.
Governor Ravi said Dr Namperumalsamy was a visionary whose profound contributions to clinical excellence, academic scholarship and philanthropy illuminated countless lives.
CM Stalin, in his message, said, 'Dr Namperumalsamy dedicated his life to restoring vision to lakhs of people. His passing is a great loss not only to the field of medicine but also to the people of Madurai.'
AIADMK general secretary Edapapdi K Palaniswami, PMK 'president' Anbumani Ramadoss and AMMK general secretary TTV Dhinakaran also condoled the death.

‘Nalam Kaakkum Stalin' health screening camps inaugurated in Tirunelveli, Tenkasi districts
Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu on Saturday inaugurated the 'Nalam Kaakkum Stalin' health screening camp at Thisaiyanvilai in the presence of Collector R. Sukumar. Speaking on the occasion, he said the upper middle class families and the rich could afford to spend every year anywhere between ₹5,000 and ₹15,000 for the 'Master Health Check-Up' to check their health parameters and take medical treatment appropriately, which would save them from serious ailments. However, the middle and lower middle class and the poor families could not spend so much to take care of their health. Hence, the Tamil Nadu Government had introduced 'Nalam Kaakkum Stalin' health screening camps across Tamil Nadu. Physicians and surgeons from the Departments of General Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pediatrics, Cardiology, Neurology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Pulmonology, Psychiatry, Physiotherapy and Indian Medicine were present in the camp to screen the patients. Special emphasis would be given to screen patients for diabetes, hypertension, ECG and blood analysis. 'Since prevalence of cancer due to pollution and lifestyle has become common, oncologists have also been posted in the camps to check a range of cancers, particularly cervical and breast cancer,' the Speaker said. Moreover, arrangements had been made to clinically screen the visitors and give certificates to the differently-abled, identity card for Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. 'The results of the investigations will be handed over to the patients immediately,' he said. Mr. Sukumar said 30 'Nalam Kaakkum Stalin' camps would be organised in Tirunelveli district every Saturday. Patients requiring further treatment would be referred to the nearby government hospital or the Government Medical College Hospital for specialised treatment. For instance, Samuthira Pandi, a patient from Thisaiyanvilai showed significant variations during ECG tests and was immediately taken to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital in an ambulance along with his nephew Esakki for further investigation and appropriate treatment. District Revenue Officer M. Suganya was present. In Tenkasi district, Collector A.K. Kamal Kishore inaugurated the 'Nalam Kaakkum Stalin' programme in Government Higher Secondary School at Melaneelithanallur near Sankarankovil in the presence of MP Rani Srikumar. 'The camp will be held at 10 places in Tenkasi district every Saturday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.' Mr. Kamal Kishore said. District Health Officer Govindan, Joint Director of Health Services Premalatha and others participated in the camp.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is a girlish spright in her steps as she sashays into the thick, verdant spread surrounding her mud house, the insides of which reflect a deeply earthy aesthetic — smoking stoves, dim interiors, and a clustered room brimming with mementoes and accolades she has earned over the years. At 81, Lakshmikutty Amma takes pride in all that she has achieved, especially the Padma Shri, which reached her from Delhi to the remote, reclusive stretch of land nestled in Ponmudi's Kallar forest range. She remains passionately engaged in her vocation, one handed down through generations of her tribe, the Kani, known for their intrinsic knowledge of the Western Ghats. 'I have two people coming tomorrow for treatment,' Lakshmi exclaims, adding that people seek her help for relief from migraines, rheumatoid arthritis, and lifestyle ailments related to diabetes or blood pressure. 'But my forte is vishavaidyam, that is treating poisoning from bites of snakes or other reptiles.' Both Ayurvedic and allopathic practitioners come to learn from her — a Class 8 dropout. 'But remember, Class 8 in my youth was a hefty education for tribespeople,' she smiles. Though Lakshmi is the most well-known, the stretch of forest is home to several such traditional physicians from the Kani clan who continue to practise tribal medicine. Mallan Kani and his son Ashok are one such duo, running a clinic near the main road leading to Ponmudi.

Two specialists each in all taluk hospitals soon: DGR
Mangaluru: The health department plans to ensure that all taluk hospitals across the state will have at least two each of gynaecologists, anaesthetists, and paediatricians. Minister for health and family welfare Dinesh Gundu Rao told reporters on Friday that many hospitals face a shortage of specialists, while some have more postings than the actual requirement. To sort out this issue, the department will begin the process of reallocating doctors. Accordingly, specialists working in hospitals and CHCs with fewer inpatients will be deputed to the taluk hospitals, the minister said. He was speaking at a meeting of the Arogya Raksha Samiti of the Government Wenlock District Hospital on Friday. "When we ensure guaranteed services, people will visit govt hospitals. We want to make this possible in all taluk hospitals in the state," he said. While discussing Wenlock District Hospital, the minister suggested that a master plan needs to be prepared for the comprehensive development of the facility. He directed officials to discuss with the deputy commissioner and experts to prepare a master plan for Wenlock Hospital. The Minister said the govt will sanction funds required for the additional requirements at the Wenlock hospital. A foundation stone laying ceremony may be conducted during Kannada Rajyotsava celebration on Nov 1, he said. Superintendent of Wenlock hospital, Dr DS Shivaprakash, explained about a month-long celebration to commemorate the 175th anniversary of Wenlock hospital. He said that the Wenlock, Lady Goschen, and KMC old students association are preparing to hold celebrations from Sept 14 to Nov 9, inviting chief minister Siddaramaiah for the valedictory. The minister suggested holding a preliminary meeting with the deputy commissioner regarding the celebrations.
