Stephen Colbert spoofs Coldplay concert 'Kiss Cam' with Seth Meyers, Jimmy Fallon

Late-night hosts are rallying around Stephen Colbert – and spoofing the most infamous concert moment of the summer.
Colbert returned to "The Late Show" on Monday, July 21, for the first time since announcing that CBS has canceled his late-night program. After addressing the network's decision in his monologue, the comedian introduced performers Lin-Manuel Miranda and "Weird Al" Yankovic to sing a song that would "cheer up" the audience.
The duo jumped into the Coldplay song "Viva la Vida" as Miranda directed the show's camera operators to scan the audience – in a move mimicking the viral jumbotron reveal of the embracing Astronomer couple at the July 18 Coldplay concert.
"The Late Show" jumbotron "couples" on display featured CNN's Anderson Cooper and Bravo's Andy Cohen; fellow late night hosts Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers; "Happy Gilmore 2" stars Adam Sandler and Christopher McDonald as well as a middle-finger-waving John Oliver of HBO's "Last Week Tonight" with Jon Stewart of "The Daily Show."

The final couple was a cartoon President Donald Trump hugging a Paramount logo. Colbert then interrupted Yankovic and Miranda to tell them, "I just got this note from corporate. Your song has been canceled. It says here, 'This is a purely financial decision.'"
John Oliver speaks out about 'sad' Stephen Colbert 'Late Show' cancellation
"Tell me this has nothing to do with who we just put a spotlight on," Miranda protested. But Colbert insisted, "This is out of my hands."
The end of the bit was a reference to claims that CBS canceled "The Late Show" to appease Trump. The network's parent company, Paramount Global, has maintained the move was "purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night," which was not "related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount."
Earlier in the July 21 episode of the "Late Show," Colbert thanked everyone who has reached out to offer their support following the cancellation news. "Over the weekend, it sunk in that they're killing off our show, but they made one mistake: They left me alive," he quipped.
But Colbert reassured his audience that his show's cancellation is not a "sign of something truly dire," telling viewers, "We here at the 'Late Show' never saw our job as changing anything other than how you felt at the end of the day, which I think is a worthy goal."

‘Happy Gilmore 2' Review - Insanely Silly And Heartwarming Fun

Take this with a grain of salt, but upon closer analysis, Netflix's Happy Gilmore 2 reveals a comedy that is smarter than it seems. For one, the original Happy Gilmore was about challenging the elitism of a stuffy, purist golf culture that needed a shake-up. A sort of lowbrow Caddyshack—if such a thing is possible—it was a blue-collar redemption story where talent and heart mattered more than etiquette. Which brings me to my point about Happy Gilmore 2: it revives that same working-class story in a setting the titular character once brought to golf—a world that has now gotten way, and I mean way, out of hand. Sandler is back with a sensibility only he can bring to the screen. This time, however, he has cleverly satirized commercialization and the modern evolution of golf. Particularly, the marketing of sports often clashes with tradition. Oh, and the movie happens to be funny, insanely silly, and heartwarming fun. The story picks up years after Happy Gilmore's (Adam Sandler) successful golf career. He's now married to the love of his life, Virginia (Modern Family's Julie Bowen, reprising her role from the original—a recurring theme in the film). They have five kids together, including four rough-and-tumble boys. Their youngest, Vienna (You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah's Sunny Sandler), is an aspiring ballet dancer. Oh, and John Daly hilariously lives in Happy's garage. Happy wants to retire, but Virginia believes he won't be—well, happy—without the game he loves. However, after a family tragedy, Happy quits golf, turns to drinking, and loses all his money. Happy now works at a grocery store to support his family (and apparently John Daly). That is, until Vienna accepts a prestigious ballet academy in Paris. Great, right? Well, hold on, because the tuition bill of over $300,000 is too much for them to afford. That is, until Frank Manatee (Benny Safdie—Sandler, rewarding him for directing Uncut Gems) approaches Happy with the deal of a lifetime. The CEO of Maxi Energy Drink wants to sponsor a new kind of game: Maxi Golf. The vision resembles characters from a Mad Max movie, and the courses resemble gigantic mini golf on steroids. Frank wants to make Happy the face of his brand of chaos in a gentleman's game. The real question is whether Happy will be able to find his stroke again to make his daughter's dreams come true. Happy Gilmore 2 was directed by Kyle Newacheck (What We Do in the Shadows). Working from a script from Sandler and Tim Herlihy, who cowrote such golden-age Sandler comedies as Billy Madison, The Waterboy, and The Wedding Singer. The movie tells a sweet story about family while honoring the original in multiple ways. For instance, all Happy's Boys do the same shtick he did on the job when he was on the golf course. An underlying theme is the love for his wife, Virginia, showing the performer's growth as a storyteller. Many will point to an overemphasis on nods to the original and star cameos. However, new ones like Bad Bunny, John Daly, and Travis Kelce steal the scenes they are in. Also, Ben Stiller and Christopher McDonald are comedic gems reprising their roles. However, Sandler always makes his films a family affair. He brings in relatives of members who have passed away, while also using special effects to create poignant cameos for those who have passed on. That is what makes Happy Gilmore 2 worth watching for the nostalgia factor alone, with Sandler bringing back everyone in some shape or form. For one, he returns to his comedic style, but also demonstrates his maturity by honoring those who gave him a helping hand. Not to mention the audience that always lent their support. The movie is a legacy sequel that is so much fun, you forget the controlled comedic chaos of it all, let go, and enjoy the experience for what it is. Happy Gilmore 2 is now available to stream exclusively on Netflix.

David Letterman calls Paramount 'gutless' for canceling Stephen Colbert's 'Late Show'

David Letterman is questioning the motivations behind the shock cancellation of his former CBS home, "The Late Show." Speaking with former "Late Night with David Letterman" colleagues Barbara Gaines and Mary Barclay in a July 25 clip from "The Barbara Gaines Show" on Letterman's YouTube channel, the 78-year-old comedian did not hold back. He threw barbs at CBS parent company Paramount Global and David Ellison, who's slated to become CEO after Paramount merges with his Skydance Media in an $8.4 billion deal. "It's all very strange. It's very complicated, but it was a bit of a surprise, wasn't it?" Letterman said. As the 14-minute Zoom conversation continued, he eventually called Paramount pulling the plug on Stephen Colbert's show "pure cowardice" and "gutless." Letterman hosted the show from 1993 until 2015, at which point Colbert took over post-"Colbert Report." After Colbert announced on July 17 that "The Late Show" would be ending in May after more than 30 years, Paramount released a statement that called the move "purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night." The media company also maintained: "It is not related in any way to the show's performance, content, or other matters happening at Paramount." While Colbert's show is the top rated at 11:30 p.m. ET/PT, it was losing a reported $40 million a year. David Letterman blasts explanation that 'Late Show' was canceled for financial reasons Letterman speculated that Paramount is capitulating to Ellison, who might not "want any trouble from that guy," referring to Colbert, long known for his political satire and criticism of President Donald Trump. "Not only are we going to get rid of that guy, we're going to get rid of the whole franchise so you don't have to worry about another guy," Letterman said in an impersonation of Paramount executives. "It's gone, buddy!" "I think it's sad, but what this indicates also is (Ellison doesn't) want any trouble along the lines of freedom of the press or free speech or freedom of expression," Letterman surmised. "They don't want to get their hands dirty; they don't want the government going after them." He also cast doubt on the explanation that the "Late Show" cancellation was "purely a financial decision." "I don't think it was money. I think it was all to make sure (Ellison was) solid spending dad's (Larry Ellison's) money," he said. "You're telling me losing this kind of money happened yesterday?" he said. "I bet they were losing this kind of money a month ago. I'll bet they were losing this kind of money six weeks ago, or they have never been losing money. "Take a look at the CBS News. It's still in business, and I'm not certain that that's a profit center," he continued. What Letterman said before: The ex-host's subtle jab at CBS amid Colbert 'Late Show' cancellation 'We've all got to kiss Stephen Colbert's ring' Letterman, who was complimentary of Colbert and the work he's done since taking over Letterman's show, went on to excoriate Paramount's treatment of its star talent. "They did not do the correct thing. They did not handle Stephen Colbert, the face of that network, in the way he deserves to have been handled," he said. Letterman went on to declare that those who decided the fate of "The Late Show" would regret the move. "One day, if not today, the people at CBS who have manipulated and handled this are going to be embarrassed because this is gutless," Letterman said. "Now we've all got to kiss Stephen Colbert's ring now," he added, joking that he's a "martyr" for his firing.
