British and Irish Lions grind out a 21-10 win over Waratahs for a third win in 8 days
Big back-to-back wins over
Western Force
on Australia's west coast and
Queensland Reds
on the east coast followed a similar patterns where the Lions surged in the second half after arm-wrestles early with the local Super Rugby teams.
It was a different rhythm in Sydney, with a third different captain for the Lions and another re-arranged lineup with a view on the three-test tour.
Center Huw Jones scored close-range tries in the 12th and 35th minutes to give the Lions a 14-0 lead, although the Waratahs had a try overturned by the Television Match Official for a lineout obstruction in between.
The Waratahs scored from the second kick restart, sending the ball to the short side where winger Darby Lancaster beat some forward defenders, was knocked off balance by Hugo Keenan's attempted covering tackle before scrambling the last five meters to score in the left corner. That made it 14-5 at halftime.
The Lions hadn't conceded a point in the second half of their opening two wins but that run ended less than two minutes after the break, when Waratahs hooker Ethan Dobbins crashed over after a driving maul from a lineout, with two backs joining the maul.
Jack Bowen's conversion attempt hit the near upright, leaving the score at 14-10.
The Lions were denied an almost immediate try in response by some desperate cover defense before scrumhalf Alex Mitchell scored in the 55th, darting to the shortside from a ruck after sustained pressure from a scrum penalty and a stream of Waratahs errors.
Finn Smith converted to make it 21-10 and it appeared the Lions were starting to get on a roll again, particularly when Mitchell kicked a 50-22 to give the Lions another ideal attacking opportunity.
He then threw the last pass for replacement prop Ellis Genge to drive over on the hour, but the ball was lost in the tackle and the Waratahs held firm.
The Lions barged over again in the 76th but had a try disallowed for a lineout obstruction in the buildup, and weren't able to cross again in a scrappy, error-strewn encounter.
The Lions are now 3-0 since a 28-24
loss to Argentina
in a warmup in Dublin before the traveling to
Australia for a nine-game tour,
which includes three tests against the Wallabies on July 19, 26 and Aug. 2.
The British and Irish squad will next play the Canberra-based Brumbies on Wednesday.

Phillies' Ranger Suárez gets a shorter start as the ace left-hander's workload grows
Associated Press PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Ranger Suarez has piled up enough pitches and innings this season for the reigning NL East champion Philadelphia Phillies to fit the modern definition of a workhorse. On Saturday, it was time for a break. Or at least time to shorten the left-hander's outing against Cincinnati to give him some rest and try to prevent wear and tear on a body that broke down at the end of last season. Suárez was pulled after just five innings and 80 pitches, the fewest of each since his first start of the season in early May. Suárez earned a no-decision but did his part — along with home runs from Alec Bohm, Kyle Schwarber and Edmundo Sosa — to help the Phillies beat the Reds 5-1. Manger Rob Thomson said because of a recent heavy workload, Suárez entered on an 85-pitch limit. Suárez had pitched at least seven innings in each of his last five starts and thrown at least six in all but his first start of the year, when he allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings. Suárez (7-2, 1.99 ERA) has been superb since then. He made six June starts and threw at least 94 pitches in all of them, and he has a 1.22 ERA over his last 11 starts. 'We went into today just trying to pull back a little bit,' Thomson said. 'I don't really concern myself with (velocity) because he pitches and that's what he did today. He threw strikes, first-pitch strikes.' Suárez said he agreed with Thomson's decision to play it safe with his left shoulder and back. Suárez has not allowed more than one earned run since June 7 at Pittsburgh, and he's permitted one or zero earned runs in nine of his 12 starts. Even though he missed April as he recovered from a back injury, Suárez's numbers are strong enough to merit consideration for a second straight All-Star nod. Thomson stumped for his star pitcher — who's eligible for free agency at the end of the season — along with fellow starters Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sanchez to represent the NL on July 15 in Atlanta. He'll find out Sunday if he's on the team. 'When the season starts, one of the goals you have as a player is to go to the All-Star Game,' Suárez said through an interpreter. 'On that end, I'm a little hopeful. If that happens, I'm excited about it. But I think the main thing for us right now is to focus on just finishing the season as healthy as possible.' The Phillies have reason to be cautious with Suárez as they chase their fourth straight playoff berth and first World Series title since 2008. Suárez went 10-2 with a 1.83 ERA in 16 starts last season through June 25 before a bad back stuck him on the injured list and he tailed off with a 2-6 mark and a 6.54 ERA over his last 11 starts. Suárez also missed time with a back injury in 2022. The Phillies need Suárez healthy and at his best in October, even if pitch counts cost him a win in July. Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani worked two scoreless innings against the Houston Astros on Saturday in his fourth mound start of the season, striking out the side in order in the second while pitching on his 31st birthday. Ohtani allowed one hit and threw 31 pitches, 21 for strikes. He fanned Christian Walker, Victor Caratini and Yanier Diaz — all swinging — to conclude his latest outing as an opener as he works his way back from elbow surgery. In his previous start a week earlier, Ohtani threw the fastest pitch of his career at 101.7 mph. This time, he hit triple digits only once — a 100.9 mph fastball that Caratini fouled off. Dodgers organist Dieter Ruehle played one line of 'Happy Birthday' as Ohtani walked to the dugout after the second inning. Before the game, the Los Angeles grounds crew wrote the message 'HB Sho' in the dirt. Isaac Paredes led off against Ohtani with a single to left. Ohtani then got Cam Smith to hit a comebacker that second baseman Tommy Edman turned into a double play. Jose Altuve followed with a groundout as Ohtani retired the side on 10 pitches. Detroit All-Star Gleyber Torres exits game at Cleveland after taking elbow to head
CLEVELAND (AP) — Detroit All-Star second baseman Gleyber Torres left Saturday's game against Cleveland in the middle of the first inning after he took an elbow to the head while sliding into second base. Torres got on base after drawing a walk with one out. On Riley Greene's ground ball, Cleveland second baseman Johnathan Rodriguez flipped the ball out of his glove to Brayan Rocchio. The shortstop though was drawn off the bag as Torres slid short of second base and was belted by Rocchio's glove and elbow as he fell. Torres was on the ground and examined by trainers for a couple minutes before coming out of the game. Javier Báez moved from shortstop to second base while Mark Sweeney came in to play shortstop. Torres is batting .279 and has an on-base streak of 18 games. He was one of the three Detroit players voted as an AL starter for the July 15 All-Star Game in Atlanta, along with outfielders Riley Greene and Báez. ___ AP MLB:
