Football comes home: Jubilant fans greet Lionesses on return to England

The Lionesses have returned to the UK after triumphing at the Euros, as hundreds of jubilant fans waited to greet the team.
The team landed back in the country on Monday afternoon after defending their Euros title in a penalty shootout win over Spain in Basel, Switzerland, on Sunday.
Supporters, many of whom were dressed in England kits and holding flags, cheered as they waited outside Southend Airport in Essex to greet the Lionesses.
Among them were twins Poppy and Daisy Macdonald, 11, from Benfleet, Essex, who were holding a sign asking for a photo with star striker Alessia Russo.
Poppy said: 'We're so proud. They've won it two times in a row and they've worked so hard for it.
'They've had a lot of injuries and setbacks but they've done really well.'
Daisy admitted she struggled to watch the penalty shootout, adding: 'I couldn't watch, I was very nervous, but very happy that they won.'
In a post on X, the team shared a photo of the Euros trophy draped in an England flag on a seat on the plane.

The team will be welcomed to a celebratory reception at Downing Street later on Monday, hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and sports minister Stephanie Peacock.
Team captain Leah Williamson was seen smiling and holding the Euros trophy as the team left their hotel in Zurich and began their journey home in the rain.
Other team members, wearing their medals, smiled as they high-fived supporters waiting outside the building and signed autographs.

Lauren Hemp was seen carrying a Beauty and the Beast castle made out of Lego on her journey home.
Other players have discussed hobbies outside of football which they have used to help unwind during the tournament, with star striker Michelle Agyemang revealing she had brought a piano with her to Switzerland.
Tuesday will see the team enjoy an open-top bus procession along The Mall and a ceremony in front of Buckingham Palace.
However, the Lionesses began their celebrations in Switzerland and can be seen cheering, raising a glass and dancing with Reggie, the dog, in a video posted on the team's official social media accounts.
The team can be seen wearing their gold medals, chanting the white Cavapoo's name and waving his paw after the match.
Reggie belongs to Cheals on Wheels, a barista company that travelled with the team to the tournament.
Posting on Instagram, the company wrote that Reggie had 'gone international' and was 'soaking up all the love (and sneaky treats) from the team' in Switzerland.
After the game, the King said the team had the royal family's 'warmest appreciation and admiration' in a post on X, adding: 'The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can'.
A trip to Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle may be on the cards for the winning squad as it is understood possible plans for a reception in the autumn are being explored by royal aides.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer hailed the team's triumph, saying the Lionesses had 'once again captured the hearts of the nation' and were 'an inspiration for young people across the country'.
Alessia Russo gave the Lionesses hope of retaining their Euros title with her second-half equaliser after Mariona Caldentey netted the opener for Spain in the 25th minute. The Lionesses went on to triumph 3-1 on penalties.
A picture of the Prince of Wales with his arm around his daughter Princess Charlotte was posted to X, with the caption 'champions of Europe'.
At the presentation ceremony, William congratulated Agyemang on being named young player of the tournament, appearing to say 'well played, fantastic, well done' at the presentation ceremony.

Agyemang, 19, who had one England cap before the tournament, scored crucial equalisers in the Lionesses' quarter-final and semi-final comebacks.
On Monday, a mural at Russo's first grassroots club, Bearsted FC, was unveiled to mark the victory and celebrate National Lottery funding for the game.
The red, white and blue image depicts the player alongside a St George's cross and a roaring lioness at the club in Maidstone, Kent.
To celebrate the win, the Royal Mail will mark the occasion with a congratulatory postmark – which will be applied to stamped mail across the UK from Monday to Friday.

Former Arsenal player Thomas Partey granted conditional bail

The Ghanaian midfielder, 32, has been charged with five counts of rape against two women, as well as a charge of sexual assault against a third woman. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022, when he was an Arsenal player. Partey stood with his arms behind his back in the dock at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, wearing a black zip-neck jumper. The footballer, who gave his address as Potters Bar, showed no reaction as the charges were read out and was not asked to enter any pleas. The alleged offences include incidents of anal rape, the court heard. His bail conditions include that he cannot contact any of the three women and must notify police of any permanent changes of address or international travel. It comes amid reports that Partey is set to join Spanish club Villarreal. As bail conditions were discussed in court, Chief Magistrate Paul Goldspring said: 'I understand he's no longer employed in this country and playing in Spain now.' Partey is due to appear at the Old Bailey on September 2. He was charged four days after leaving Arsenal when his contract expired at the end of June. A spokeswoman for Arsenal Supporters Against Sexual Violence said they were 'profoundly disappointed' in the north London club for their handling of the matter. Speaking outside court, Honor Barber told the PA news agency: 'We never wanted to be in a situation where the club that we love and the club that has values that we believe in was playing, week-in week-out, a player who is now facing court appearances on six counts of sexual violence. 'We protested outside almost every home game last season because we wanted to disrupt the wall of silence that the club has put up around this issue, and we did that because we want to support our club and feel happy and comfortable supporting our club.' Members of the group held a banner which read 'Arsenal said: 'We do the right thing' then did nothing'. Ms Barber said the group wanted Arsenal to publish their sexual violence policies, 'suspend anyone under investigation for sexual offences' and 'properly support the survivors'. The Metropolitan Police said it first received reports of an allegation of rape in February 2022. Partey's lawyer Jenny Wiltshire previously said he 'denies all the charges against him', adding he welcomed 'the opportunity to finally clear his name'. He joined Arsenal from Atletico Madrid in 2020 in a transfer worth around £45 million. The defensive midfielder signed for the Spanish club in 2012 and made 188 appearances, as well as going out on loan to Mallorca and Leganes. He played 35 games for the north London club in the Premier League last season, scoring four goals. Partey has also made more than 50 appearances for Ghana including at the World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations. An Arsenal spokesperson previously said: 'The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case.'

After their heart-breaking extra time defeat to FC Midtjylland, The Hibees bounced back well at Dens Park on Sunday, where they beat Dundee 2-1 with the help of a Kieron Bowie brace. There have been questions asked whether Hibs would be able to pick up from where they left off last season. However, with their performances, the Leith side have showcased they are up for a scrap on multiple fronts. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad A notable departure has been announced from Easter Road before the Partizan Belgrade tie in Conference League third round qualifying. Hibs right back, Lewis Miller, has moved to Blackburn Rovers in a seven figure package, the Australian has put the move down to a phone call he had with former Aston Villa striker, Rudy Gestede, who is now Head of Football Operations at Ewood Park. Phone call made Lewis Miller's move to Blackburn Rovers a 'done deal' Speaking to Rovers TV, Miller said; 'I've been speaking with Rudy [Gestede, Head of Football Operations] and he's emphasised that this is the right place to be. I really like where this club is planning on going and I'm so excited to be here now. 'After qualifying for the World Cup with Australia, it's felt like everything has been going in my favour since then. I've had contact with a few clubs in England, but once Rovers and Rudy got me on the phone, it was a done deal with the plans and the quality of the squad. 'It fills me with confidence that we can get to the play-offs and then hopefully get promoted, because that's what we're all playing football for' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hibs boss says Miller will 'go a long way' Miller's valuation speaks for itself after some of his performances over the past seasons. Since signing from Central Coast Mariners the athleticism and work rate of the Aussie made him a fan favourite at Easter Road. His good form got him into the Australian National Team in 2023, where he recently helped the Socceroos qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Hibs sporting director, Malky Mackey revealed the club triggered Miller's contract extension at the end of last season with the intention to cash in on the defender. This was amid the growing interest over the Socceroos star from the UK and abroad. David Gray had nothing but praise for Miller following his move, stating; 'I'd like to start by thanking Millsy for all his efforts during his time with us. Since making the move to Scotland, he's been coachable, willing to learn, and has relentlessly worked on his game. He's certainly seen the rewards for that both at club level and internationally. We know he can go a long way and wish him all the best in England with Blackburn.'

Lucy Bronze holidays with Spain rival and 'close friend' Ona Batlle after Euros triumph - with Lionesses star overcoming broken leg to help side secure historic victory

England 's Euro 2025 winning defender Lucy Bronze has been holidaying with friend and final opponent Ona Batlle in the wake of the tournament. Bronze was part of Sarina Wiegman 's best side throughout the tournament and played the final with a broken leg, and was an crucial part of the side the retained the trophy they won in 2021. After the match, she was seen consoling close friend Batlle on the field, as both sat to reflect and Batlle mourned her side's loss in the final. Jubilant celebrations saw Chloe Kelly and Co flood onto the pitch to begin the party, but Bronze took a moment to escape the hubbub and made a beeline for Batlle. Inseparable on and off the pitch, the two friends high-fived before sitting down on the pitch, seemingly discussing the pulsating showdown that had played out in Basel. Now, the duo appear to be enjoying each other's company during their breaks before the start of the new women's season, with Bronze sharing a snap to her Instagram story of drinks that the two had been drinking. Bronze, 33, shared a photo of what appeared to be two iced coffees, places on a wooden table with napkins and a jar of an unknown substance also visible. Once the madness of last month's final had died down, Bronze, kitted out with her gold winner's medal around her neck, took a stroll with Batlle, who had changed into her tracksuit. The roles were reversed back in 2023 after Spain got the better of England in the World Cup final, when Batlle consoled a tearful Bronze after full-time. The duo were all-conquering team-mates in the 2023-24 season when they were at Barcelona, and they struck up a blossoming friendship, too. They also won the Champions League, Liga F, the Spanish Cup and Spanish Super Cup together. Bronze then completed a move back to England with Chelsea last summer. Bronze, 33, and Batlle, 26, enjoyed a holiday together ahead of Euro 2025 in Spain, sharing photos of the trip across their social media profiles from France - and it wasn't the first time they had been away together either. It appeared the duo were celebrating Batlle's birthday, with the Spaniard's caption on Instagram reading: 'Bday week.' One photo shared online showed them enjoying an ice cream in the sun, while another saw them relaxing on a lilo together in the sea. Bronze and Batlle also took a boat trip on their holiday and spent time together in a private pool. The duo enjoyed a summer holiday together just weeks before the tournament in Switzerland They were forced to set their friendship aside for the nerve-shredding final, but have been relaxing together again Last Christmas, meanwhile, Batlle posted snaps of the two at Disneyland Paris, with the caption: 'What a magical place'.
