Octopus Energy issues statement on bills as 'prices set to rise'

Daily Mirror4 days ago
The price cap for July to September has been confirmed at £1,720 a month, with Octopus predicting it will rise by £38 from September, before a further increase in January
Energy giant Octopus has released an update on the expected fluctuations in gas and electricity bills over the coming year. The typical charges are governed by the Energy Price Cap, which is reviewed and set by Ofgem every quarter.
This regulatory measure necessitates that households adjust to bill changes on a quarterly basis. Energy providers attempt to forecast future charges to provide customers with an estimate of their potential expenses for the next six or 12 months. Such predictions can also affect decisions regarding whether to fix energy bills. However, official prices are only confirmed closer to the time.

The price cap for the period from July to September has been established at £1,720 per month, reports Birmingham Live. Octopus has expressed "fairly confident" expectations of a £38 increase from September.

A further hike of £11 could follow from January, spelling more woes for cash-strapped Britons, although this remains "uncertain".
There's a glimmer of hope that charges might begin to decrease from April next year, with a more significant reduction potentially occurring from July 2026.
Octopus anticipates a £42 cut at that juncture, but admits to having "very low confidence" in this long-term prediction due to the challenge of accurately forecasting prices over such an extended period.
Even with the anticipated reductions, if they materialise as projected, bills will roughly return to their levels from July 2025, indicating that high charges are likely to persist.
Octopus stated: "Ofgem's Energy Price Cap changes every few months and it can be tricky to figure out how it'll affect your bills.
"To help, we've created a yearly forecast designed to put your mind at ease and take the guesswork out of managing your energy.
"From 1 July to 30 September 2025, the price of energy for a typical home that uses both electricity and gas, and pays by direct debit, will go down by 7% to £1,720 per year – reducing energy bills for a typical home by £11 a month.
"The energy price cap only applies to those on a flexible tariff (or variable tariff). Even though the price cap has come down a notch, it's worth thinking about locking in your rates on a fixed tariff – as these currently offer our cheapest prices."

Brits charging their EVs at home urged to act now following major announcement

Major changes that came into effect across the nation earlier this week mean more than a million drivers in the UK might be paying significantly more than they need to — unless they take action now UK motorists with electric vehicles (EVs) have been issued a costly warning if they don't take action swiftly. The new Ofgem energy price cap has officially come into effect, which is particularly relevant for more than a million EV owners who charge their cars on their drive at home. Experts say now is the perfect time to explore potentially switching your energy tariff to save money by opting for a fixed-term deal or an EV-based tariff. David Watson, CEO of Ohme — a company that specialises in EV smart home chargers — said: "Charging at home will always be the most affordable place for EV drivers to charge their cars and this lower electricity price is great news to help them reduce their running costs. However, any EV driver charging at home should look at switching to one of the wide range of energy tariffs that drop those costs still further to help save them even more money." Switching from a standard variable tariff to a fixed-term deal could result in major savings for many households — but particularly those with home-charged EVs. Many energy firms now also have energy tariffs specifically for EV drivers, allowing them to charge their cars at night using cheaper off-peak electricity. For example, British Gas currently has an EV energy tariff that charges customers 7.9p per kWh between 12am and 5am. Similarly, Eon's Next Drive tariff charges Brits 6.7p per kWh when you plug in your car between 12am and 7am. As previously reported, UK energy industry regulator Ofgem announced that from July 1, 2025, the price cap for the average dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit would be set at £1,720. This represents a reduction of £129, or seven per cent from the previous annual rate of £1,849. While this decrease will be welcomed by many, the new cap remains 34 per cent higher than the rates in place before the UK energy crisis began towards the autumn of 2021. The energy price cap was lowered to £1,568 in July 2024 — the lowest point since the onset of the energy crisis — before increasing to £1,717 in October 2024, then to £1,738 in January 2025, and up to the previous limit of £1,849 in April 2025. Ben Gallizzi, senior content editor at Uswitch, also said: "The price cap will drop by seven per cent in July, but customers can start saving now by fixing their deal. There are deals available to switch to that can save around £250 a year against the price cap. If you have the option of getting off a standard variable tariff and ditching the price cap, it's worth doing that now." The government intervened in October 2022, when Ofgem's price cap was projected to soar to £4,279 by January 2023. In an effort to help households manage these escalating costs, the energy price guarantee was introduced, initially setting a 'safety cap' of £2,500 a year for an average dual-fuel customer — with government subsidies covering the difference. By May 2023, this guarantee was increased to £3,000, and the measure has since been scrapped entirely.

Brits more confident in their finances than ever before - here's why

Despite ongoing economic uncertainty, Britons are feeling more financially confident than last year, according to a survey of more than 4,000 adults. Forty percent now say they are "very confident" in managing their finances - up from just 10 percent in 2023. The boost comes despite challenges like a volatile stockmarket and low interest rates. Eighty-four percent feel more confident in their ability to save, with 40 percent crediting an emergency fund for their peace of mind. The number of adults with some form of savings has risen to 83 percent, up from 75 percent, and there's been a 10 percent increase in those actively investing. Credit card debt averages have also seen a decline, falling below £2,000, from £2,096 to £1,995, reports the Daily Star. Despite these positive trends, the study commissioned by Moneybox reveals that while there is greater confidence in retirement planning, only 21 percent feel 'very confident' about achieving a comfortable retirement. Brian Byrnes, head of personal finance at Moneybox, commented to say: "There is still much more the financial services industry can do to support people on this journey to move towards their financial goals with confidence. "Whilst providers like Moneybox are working to make tools and information as accessible as possible - and positive initiatives like targeted support are on the horizon - the financial services industry cannot take its eye off the ball." The study indicates a growing trend of individuals proactively managing their finances, with many describing their approach as "structured and comprehensive", and a significant number are self-educating on personal finance matters. Belfast has emerged as the city with the most financially assured inhabitants in the UK, with London and Manchester also ranking high. Notably, confidence levels have risen across nearly all urban areas over the last twelve months. Brian Byrnes commented: "The government, regulators and the industry need to match their drive and momentum and commit to doing all they can to close the advice gap and help people make informed financial decisions with greater confidence. "These results show how far people have come - learning from the economic challenges of recent years and taking control of their financial future. "They show that financial confidence is like a seed: once planted, with a little encouragement, it grows - prompting people to spend more time learning, planning, and engaging with their money.
