Illinois expected to thrive over Goodwood Cup trip

The Ballydoyle handler saddled the brilliant Yeats to land the Group One contest in both 2006 and 2008, a feat repeated by his latest superstar stayer Kyprios, who struck gold in 2022 before regaining his crown 12 months ago.
Following the latter's retirement, Illinois was drafted into the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and performed admirably to finish best of the rest behind the front-running Trawlerman – and with the latter not in attendance, the four-year-old is favourite to go one better on the Sussex Downs.

O'Brien said: 'He ran well in the Gold Cup and we're looking forward to this, obviously it's a shorter trip than Ascot.
'We thought this would be a nice third race back for him this year and we've been very happy with him since Ascot.'
Connections have a major second string to their bow in the form of Scandinavia, a dominant winner of the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket three weeks ago and as the sole three-year-old in the field, he is in receipt of a stone in weight from Illinois and the rest of his rivals.
'He was good in Newmarket and he seems in good form. Obviously he's only a baby, but he liked the extra distance in Newmarket the last day and seems to have come out of the race well,' O'Brien added.
Despite deciding against running Trawlerman, John and Thady Gosden are well represented, with Gold Cup fourth Sweet William joined by French Master and Military Academy.
French Master claimed his fourth win from six career starts in the Copper Horse Stakes at the Royal meeting and now tests the water over two miles on a track where he has been successful before.
John Gosden said: 'Sweet William has been in very good form. He broke well in the Gold Cup, it was a tough race and in the end the two and a half (miles) was a little too far for him – he's a two-mile to two-and-a-quarter-mile horse, but he ran a brave race.
'He's in very good form and he knows Goodwood well, so back we go again.'
Of French Master, the trainer added: 'I think he's a horse who will rise to the occasion. He won in good style (at Royal Ascot), but he's going from a handicap to a completely open Group One.
'We're hopeful he'll run a good race and we're very much looking forward to running him and seeing the jump in class. If he doesn't handle it, we can regroup.'
Another who appears better suited to the drop in trip will be Saeed bin Suroor's Dubai Future, who split Illinois and Sweet William when third in the Gold Cup.
Bin Suroor said: 'Dubai Future worked well on Thursday and heads to Goodwood in good order.
'He ran a good race in the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot, but two miles suits him better, as he showed in the Dubai Gold Cup.
'He has done very well this year and I'm looking forward to seeing how he gets on.'

Wrigley Field chosen to host 2027 All-Star Game. Manfred downplays spat with Phillies' Harper

The Friendly Confines are set to host The Midsummer Classic. Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred made it official, announcing during a news conference Friday at home plate that the 2027 All-Star Game will be held at Wrigley Field. Baseball's second-oldest ballpark hasn't hosted an All-Star Game since 1990. Chicago Cubs great Ryne Sandberg — who died Monday of cancer — won the Home Run Derby that year. Wrigley also hosted All-Star Games in 1947 and 1962. Manfred, who was joined by Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, cited the 'amazing transformation' of the ballpark and surrounding streets in the past decade as part of a massive renovation by the Ricketts family. The Cubs first approached the league about hosting an All-Star Game eight years ago. But for a variety of reasons, including competition from other cities and safety concerns with the ballpark in a bustling neighborhood, they weren't awarded one until now. Chicago cleared a big hurdle in June, when the city passed an ordinance allowing sidewalks along Addison Street to be widened and removable bollards to be installed around the ballpark. 'I think we're probably overdue in terms of being at Wrigley,' Manfred said. 'The Ricketts family, city of Chicago and state of Illinois made a tremendous investment not just in the ballpark but the area around it. I think it'll be a fantastic venue for our All-Star celebration.' Wrigley Field is set to join Cleveland's Municipal Stadium and the old Yankee Stadium as the only ballparks to host four All-Star Games. The city of Chicago will host the event for the eighth time, second only to New York with nine. Pritzker, a Cubs fan, called Wrigley Field 'the perfect place to host the All-Star Game.' 'For over 100 years, this has been the beating heart of the baseball world and a shining emblem of our nation's favorite pastime,' he said. 'There's no place like it.' Ricketts lived in the neighborhood the last time the Cubs hosted the All-Star Game. But he wasn't able to attend. 'I didn't have dough,' he said. Ricketts figures to have an up-close view this time, assuming the game is played as scheduled. There is some doubt with baseball's collective bargaining agreement set to expire following the 2026 season, though Manfred expressed confidence the owners and players will avoid a lengthy work stoppage. Asked about a potential contingency plan if there is a strike or lockout, he said: 'My contingency plan is to make an agreement with the players and play the 2027 season.' Manfred and Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper had a spirited exchange last week during a question-and-answer session between the commissioner and the team. In that meeting, Manfred spoke about the media landscape and working together to grow the sport, according to a person with knowledge of the conversation. At some point, Harper told Manfred if he was there to talk about a salary cap, he could 'get the (expletive) out' of the clubhouse. 'I think more has been made out of this than needs to be made out of it,' Manfred said Friday. 'Bryce expressed his views. At the end of the meeting, we shook hands and went our separate ways. Not all that significant.' Philadelphia hosts the 2026 All-Star Game. ___

Bears to honor Virginia Halas McCaskey, Steve McMichael

August 1 - The Chicago Bears will honor late team owner Virginia Halas McCaskey with a jersey patch this season and late Hall of Fame defensive tackle Steve McMichael with a football-shaped helmet decal. McCaskey, owner of the Bears for more than 40 years, died on Feb. 2 at the age of 102. She will have her initials displayed on the left breastplate of the Bears jersey. The patch is nearly identical to the design worn by the 1983 club when her Hall of Fame father George Halas died. She assumed ownership upon his death on Oct. 31, 1983. Her son, George, has run the franchise since he became chairman in 2011. "We thought it would be appropriate if her patch mirrored her dad's from 1983," George McCaskey said. "So it's the same size, the same color combination. The only thing that's different, of course, is the initials. We thought that was the right thing to do." McMichael died on April 23 after a long battle with ALS. He was 67. The Bears will honor McMichael by wearing a decal of his No. 76 on their helmets. The team also will honor the Super Bowl XX champion team with a logo on the grass at Soldier Field. "We wanted to have the decal, and we'll also have a field stencil at every home game this season," George McCaskey said. "This is the 40th anniversary of our Super Bowl team, so we want to properly acknowledge and honor Steve at that celebration." A two-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, McMichael enjoyed a 15-year career in the NFL as a defensive lineman. Originally selected by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 1980 NFL Draft, McMichael spent the next 13 years in Chicago, where he rose to stardom, becoming a regular starter in 1983. --Field Level Media

Jm Jungle surprises King George rivals

A field of 12 sprinters went to post for the five-furlong dash, with John and Sean Quinn's high-class handicapper Jm Jungle a 14-1 shot for what was his first appearance at Group-race level. Smartly away in the hands of Jason Hart, the five-year-old was towards the main group that raced on the far side of the track from the start and showed a willing attitude when the challengers attempted to reel him late on to prevail by a neck. She's Quality filled the runner-up spot for her fourth race in succession, with Commonwealth Cup victor Time For Sandals half a length further behind in third. JM Jungle wins the King George Qatar Stakes 🏆💨 — ITV Racing (@itvracing) August 1, 2025 John Quinn was winning the race for a second time, having saddled Highfield Princess to strike gold two years ago, and his son Sean said: 'We looked at the sprint division, decided it wasn't as strong as usual and that we would throw our hat into the ring. 'We knew he operated on a downhill track like Epsom (won the Dash on Derby day) and that the ground might inconvenience others more than us. 'He probably loves fast ground but he's versatile and is a horse that gives his all, while he's a lot stronger this year. 'In the paddock he was walking round like an old pro. These opportunities don't come around all that often, and when you have a day like this it's massive.' An appearance closer to home is next on Jm Jungle's agenda, with a tilt at Group One glory in the Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes on August 22 – a race also won by Highfield Princess in 2022 – looming large. 'Jason said early in the season that the race he would love to ride him in would be the Nunthorpe, simply because of how fast they go and how much he likes York,' Quinn added. 'That looks the natural next step because he is a Group Two winner now, so you want to be going up from there, and we put him in the Abbaye earlier in the week and that's a similar race. You get a good draw up the rail and you see how much speed he has – he'd be in that van early doors. 'It was easier watching Highfield Princess because she never looked like getting beat. I was hoping, willing for the line to come in the last furlong today but it did and he toughed it out. The second came to him and I think he went again.'
