Calgary's Ukrainian community is celebrating their culture and sharing it with this city this weekend at the Arcadia Recreation Centre in the southeast.
The festival features two stages -- a Kyiv stage and a Lviv stage -- offering live music, dance and other cultural performances.
There's plenty of food too, including borscht, varenyky (stuffed dumplings), and sweets.

There's also a Ukrainian marketplace, a kid zone and a photo zone.
Jordan Biss, the vice-chair of the festival, said the festival was more necessary than ever, given the ongoing horror of the war with Russia.
'(It's) absolutely crucial,' Biss said, 'and it makes me very proud to help support the Ukrainian community especially with the ongoing atrocious war in Ukraine.
'This really provides an opportunity for new Ukrainians to Calgary and to Canada an opportunity to connect and network with community members of like-mindedness and hopefully get them engaged in the community -- but as well, to share our culture and heritage with local Calgarians.'
The festival is at 240 90 Ave. S.E. until 6 p.m.

Winnipeg Folk Fest sets new attendance record

The Winnipeg Folk Festival broke a new attendance record over the weekend, organizers of the annual event said Tuesday. A daily average of 15,171 paying fans attended the 2025 edition of the four-day festival at Birds Hill Provincial Park, breaking a previous record set in 2019, festival spokesperson Lee-Anne Van Buekenhout said in a statement. Single-day tickets for two out of four days also sold out, Buekenhout said. The new attendance record was set during the festival's 50th season. Several performers who appeared at the first Winnipeg Folk festival in 1974 — including Bruce Cockburn and Cathy Fink — returned to perform at the anniversary event. The festival wasn't held in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 51st edition of the Winnipeg Folk Festival is slated for July 9 to 12, 2026.

Cape Breton Drive-In celebrates 50th anniversary

A throwback to a different era, the Cape Breton Drive-In hasn't changed much since the day it showed its first movie on the big outdoor screen. 'It was July 10, 1975 when we opened,' said Lindsay McKinnon, the drive-in's new managing owner. The drive-in theatre – located along Grand Lake Road in Sydney, N.S. – recently marked its 50th anniversary. 'I think it's a testament to this community's love for drive-in theatres and the nostalgia that comes with that,' McKinnon said of the milestone. Over the years, the drive-in has managed to keep a lot of its classic charm, offering a different experience from streaming a movie at home or seeing one in a standard theatre. 'You don't have to worry about the other audience members on their cell phones or talking or kicking your seat, and if you're the kind of person who's doing those things you don't have to worry about anyone complaining,' said McKinnon with a laugh. (CTV Atlantic / Ryan MacDonald) The past 50 years have included some challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and a few prolonged closures in the years leading up to it. However, MacKinnon says, in this day and age of video streaming, there appears to be a rejuvenated interest in the drive-in experience. 'I think there are somewhere in the vicinity of 50 drive-in theatres still in Canada, there are only two here in Nova Scotia,' McKinnon said. As for what's next at the Cape Breton Drive-in, McKinnon says plans include expanding their canteen menu. She also hopes to offer food delivery to vehicles in the not too distant future. McKinnon adds the cost for a snack and admission for a carload will remain a bit of a throwback, too. 'I mean, I'm not going to say we have 1975 pricing, but we definitely don't have 2025 pricing,' she said. For more Nova Scotia news, visit our dedicated provincial page
