Initiative proposed for statewide implementation
Mangaluru: Ganitha Ganaka, an initiative by the state government to enhance foundational numeracy for students in grades three to five through personalised one-to-one phone tutoring, has been proposed for implementation across govt schools in the state during the current academic year (2025-26). In line with 2024-25 budget announcement, the Ganitha Ganaka programmes were successfully conducted in 14,711 govt primary schools across 93 taluks in 17 districts, targeting around 6,99,705 students from grades three to five. The programme aimed to develop an interest in mathematics among students by involving parents and providing remote tutoring through phone calls after school hours to enhance basic mathematics skills. Considering the programme's success and effectiveness, one of the positive aspects highlighted by parents was the teachers' dedication. Samagra Shikshana Karnataka, under the department of school education and literacy, has now proposed implementing the programme across govt schools this year. The pilot project was implemented in Soraba and Raichur, and the programme later expanded to 17 districts covering 73 taluks in 2024-25. As per the circular dated July 14, the state planning director of Samagra Shikshana Karnataka has proposed that during the 2025-26 academic year, approximately 13,51,642 students from 38,548 primary and upper primary govt schools in the state will be engaged in developing an interest in mathematics and understanding basic mathematical concepts through phone calls from teachers (remote tutoring) after school hours. To effectively implement this programme, teachers will be trained at various levels through the department of state educational research and training to enhance the necessary skills. In order to carry out the programme, the govt will rope in a total of 75,000 teachers across the state. They will receive Rs 800 each, and the govt will spend a total of Rs 600 lakh. This will be done in collaboration with SSK, DSERT, Alokit, Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (JPAL), and Youth Impact organisations.

Most manjappai vending machines lie idle in Coimbatore
A manjappai vending machine. Photo by P Sreedharan COIMBATORE: Automatic cloth bag vending machines, introduced as part of an eco-friendly initiative under the Meendum Manjappai scheme, are lying idle in Coimbatore. The machines -- each costing approximately Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh -- was installed in 15 locations in the district, according to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) website. They were installed in places including the district collectorate, Gandhipuram bus stand, R S Puram Uzhavar Sandhai, the flower market on the Mettupalayam Road, Sulur and Pollachi. The machine's capacity ranges from 250 to 500 bags. Most of these machines are now non-functional and abandoned. The machines were installed to promote the use of cloth bags as a replacement for single-use plastic bags by the public. Despite an investment of more than Rs 10 lakh on these machines, public awareness about their existence remains low. As part of the campaign, an app integrated with GIS mapping of these machines was launched for public use. TOI visited the flower market, Gandhipuram bus stand, RS Puram Uzhavar Sandhai and collectorate to check the functional status of these machines. The machine on the collectorate premises had a few bags but was non-functional due to a disconnected electricity supply. The situation at the Gandhipuram bus stand was not different, with the machine showing clear signs of neglect. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo R Gomathi Devi, a commuter at Gandhipuram bus stand, said, "For more than a year, I have rarely seen this machine functioning. I believe many people are unaware of its existence. Regardless of usage, regular maintenance would attract people. Even if the machine is operational, its dusty appearance creates an impression of being defunct." A flower vendor at the bus stand added, "The machine's placement near the bus office is not ideal. It should be installed in areas with high purchasing activity like the Crosscut Road. This would encourage people to choose cloth bags over plastic covers." Responding to these concerns, a TNPCB official said, "While TNPCB handles the installation of machines, their maintenance is the local administration's responsibility. Corporation or panchayat should maintain it. We can inspect the condition based on public complaints, which can also be registered through the app."

Patna-Bound IndiGo Flight Aborts Landing, Performs Go-Around Before Safe Touchdown
Last Updated: An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Patna avoided a major accident after an unstable approach forced a go-around at Jay Prakash Narayan Airport. The pilot ensured a safe landing. A Patna-bound IndiGo flight narrowly escaped a major accident after it performed a go-around during its first landing attempt at the city's Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport after the pilot detected an unstable approach. The incident took place on Tuesday around 9 pm when IndiGo flight 6E 2482 travelling from Delhi to Patna narrowly escaped a failed landing attempt. The aircraft with 173 passengers aboard was unable to land in its first attempt due to the short runway and was forced to abort the attempt. As per the reports, the aircraft arrived at Patna airport around 9 pm. However, moments before landing, it took off again, circling three or four times in the air before attempting a second landing. While the landing was successful, the unexpected double landing caused distress among the passengers. The crew members subsequently reassured the passengers that there was no emergency and that the second take-off was due to technical reasons. According to sources, the go-around was a standard safety procedure and was carried out as a precaution. 'It was a normal and safe maneuver. The pilot opted for the go-around to ensure a stable landing approach," a source familiar with the matter said. The eyewitnesses and aviation sources confirmed that the runway, often considered among the more challenging in the country due to its limited length, posed a significant risk during the landing. The pilot's response averted not just a potential crash, but also a collision with the densely populated Polo Road area nearby, which houses several government ministers and senior officials. This incident came just a week after another IndiGo flight, 6E 5009 from Patna to Delhi, returned mid-air following a bird strike on July 9. That aircraft was grounded for maintenance checks, and the flight was cancelled. Passengers were offered a full refund or alternative arrangements, according to the airline. view comments First Published: July 16, 2025, 16:20 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
