Crusaders captain David Havili picked for AUNZ squad to face British and Irish Lions

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — Crusaders' Super Rugby title-winning captain David Havili has been selected among the New Zealand contingent for the invitational AUNZ squad to face the British and Irish Lions on Saturday.
The full squad of Australians and New Zealanders for Saturday's tour game in Adelaide was confirmed by coach Les Kiss on Monday, and will feature a core of players from his Queensland Reds franchise.
Halves pairing Kalani Thomas and Harry McLaughlin-Phillips were involved when the Reds lost 52-12 last week in Brisbane after leading the Lions 12-7 early in the first half.
This is the first time since 1989 that a combined squad of Australians and New Zealanders will take on the touring Lions lineup, which contains players from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England.
Havili, Blues hooker Kurt Eklund and Chiefs prop George Dyer will join All Blacks Aidan Ross, Folau Fakatava, Hoskins Sotutu, Ngani Laumape and Shannon Frizell in the squad.
Marika Koroibete, Pete Samu, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Matt Philip and Seru Uru are experienced Wallabies included in the invitational squad.
Kiss will be joined on the coaching team by former All Blacks coach Ian Foster, Western Force coach Simon Cron and Reds assistant Zane Hilton.
'We have quality coaches and a highly motivated group of players that represent the depth of talent across Australia and New Zealand,' Kiss said. 'Each of them has a lot to play for and there's a real sense of anticipation about the unique opportunity in front of us.
'As the first AUNZ side to be assembled in 36 years, we have the chance to do something pretty special here in Adelaide.'
The Lions are 3-0 since a 28-24
loss to Argentina
in a warmup in Dublin before the traveling Down Under for their nine-game tour, which includes three tests against the Wallabies on July 19, 26 and Aug. 2.
After wins over
Western Force
in Perth,
Queensland Reds
in Brisbane and New South Wales
Waratahs
in Sydney, the Lions will play the Brumbies in Canberra on Wednesday before taking on the AUNZ squad in their final preparation for the test series.
Australia opened its international season with a
21-18 comeback win over Fiji
in Newcastle on Sunday, a day after
New Zealand held off France
31-27 in Dunedin.

Photos show Turkey's youngest oil wrestlers keeping a 14th-century tradition alive

EDIRNE, Turkey (AP) — On a grass field slick with olive oil and steeped in tradition, hundreds of boys as young as 11 joined the ranks of Turkey's most time-honored sporting event: the annual Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling Championship. Held every summer in the northwestern city of Edirne, the event is said to date back to the 14th century as a way of keeping the Ottoman Empire's fighting men fit and ready for battle. The sport, which is on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list, sees wrestlers cover themselves in olive oil and try to press their opponent's back to the ground to win the bout. Alongside the men contesting, youngsters also don the iconic 'kispet' leather trousers to embark on a slippery test of strength, skill and stamina under the scorching sun. The boys are ranked in divisions based on age, height and build, with the youngest generally placed in the 'minik,' or tiny, category. Under strict safety regulations, their matches are shorter and closely supervised. Most young wrestlers train year-round at local clubs, often in towns where oil wrestling is passed down through generations. While the youngest competitors aren't wrestling for titles like 'baspehlivan,' the grand champion of the men's matches, their participation is no less significant as it is key to the continuity of a sport that holds deep cultural importance across Turkey. This year's contest – the 664th in its history – saw 36-year-old Orhan Okulu win his third men's title. 'My goal was the golden belt in Kirkpinar and thanks to my God, I succeeded,' Okulu said of the coveted prize. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. Naylor homers as the Diamondbacks beat the Padres 6-3 on Machado's big night

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Josh Naylor hit a two-run homer against his original team and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat San Diego 6-3 on Monday night after Padres slugger Manny Machado got his 2,000th career hit. Machado hit a hard shot off the glove of diving shortstop Geraldo Perdomo leading off the fourth inning and received a standing ovation. Machado, whose milestone hit came off starter Zac Gallen, became the fifth active player and 297th overall to reach 2,000 hits. Machado's third hit of the night was a homer off Kyle Backhus leading off the eighth, his 15th of the season and 357th of his career. The All-Star slugger also had a single in the first. Machado grounded into a game-ending double play against Kevin Ginkel, who earned his second save. Yu Darvish (0-1) made his season debut for the Padres after being sidelined with right elbow inflammation since spring training. He allowed two runs and three hits in 3 2/3 innings, struck out five and walked two. He got a nice ovation when he was lifted. Naylor homered to center field off Yuki Matsui with one out in the fifth and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. aboard on a single. It was his 11th. Naylor made his big league debut with the Padres in 2019 and was traded to Cleveland on Aug. 31, 2020, in the nine-player deal that brought Mike Clevinger to San Diego. Gallen (7-9) pitched six strong innings, holding the Padres to one unearned run and five hits while striking out nine and walking one. He improved to 4-0 in his last five starts against San Diego. Naylor walked leading off the second and scored on All-Star Eugenio Suárez's double that rattled around in the left-field corner. Gurriel's single in the third brought in Corbin Carroll, who hit a leadoff double and advanced on Perdomo's sacrifice bunt. Carroll hit an RBI triple in the eighth and scored on Perdomo's single. Key moment Machado's milestone hit came a day after his 33rd birthday. Key stat Machado is the 12th-youngest player with 2,000 career hits and at least 350 homers. Up next Diamondbacks RHP Merrill Kelly (7-4, 3.55 ERA) and Padres RHP Nick Pivetta (9-2, 3.25) are scheduled to start Tuesday night. ___ AP MLB:

Schanuel walks with bases loaded in 9th to lift Angels over Rangers 6-5

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Nolan Schanuel drew a bases-loaded walk from Hoby Milner in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a 6-5 win over the Texas Rangers on Monday night. Travis d'Arnaud hit an early two-run homer off Texas starter Jacob deGrom and finished with three RBIs. Corey Seager launched a two-run shot off Yusei Kikuchi to put the Rangers ahead 2-0 two batters into the game. Josh Smith had an RBI double for Texas that tied it at 5 in the eighth. Luis Rengifo doubled off Rangers reliever Chris Martin (0-5) to open the ninth and went to third on Kevin Newman's one-out single to left field. Zach Neto was intentionally walked to load the bases. Texas manager Bruce Bochy summoned Milner for a lefty-lefty matchup with Schanuel, who fought back from an 0-2 count before taking a 3-2 changeup below the strike zone for his second career walk-off RBI. The Angels turned a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 lead in the sixth when Rengifo singled with two outs, d'Arnaud hit an RBI double and LaMonte Wade Jr. followed with a pinch-hit RBI single. But the Rangers tied it against reliever Sam Bachman with two outs in the eighth. Jake Burger scored from first on Smith's double after reaching on a wild pitch when strike three in the dirt got past d'Arnaud. An anticipated pitchers' duel between All-Star starters didn't materialize, as deGrom gave up three runs and five hits in five innings while Kikuchi allowed four runs and six hits in five innings. Key moment Sam Haggerty reached on Neto's fielding error at shortstop to open the ninth, but Rengifo turned Seager's 106.5 mph grounder to second into a 4-6-3 double play. Kenley Jansen (2-2) then struck out Marcus Semien looking to preserve a 5-all tie. Key stat Mike Trout's sacrifice fly in the first and d'Arnaud's two-run homer in the second snapped a franchise-record string of 14 consecutive starts in which deGrom allowed two or fewer runs while pitching five innings or more, a streak that began on April 18. ___
