A strong bomb explosion targets a Greek prison guard's home and wounds 2

Indian Express26-07-2025
A bomb exploded early on Saturday outside the home of a senior Greek prison guard, injuring two people and causing damage to nearby buildings, according to police.
The target was Konstantinos Varsamis, president of the Greek association of prison guards. The device, containing about three kilograms of explosives, went off at 2:10 a.m. local time outside the entrance of his apartment building in Sykies, a suburb of Thessaloniki in northern Greece.
Varsamis, who lives on the first floor, was not hurt, police told Reuters. The explosion damaged three apartment blocks, shattering windows and bringing down a shared wall.
'I woke up because of the very loud bang of the explosion,' said 52-year-old Tzetno Kelo, who lives in a nearby building. 'Shattered glass from a window fell on my bed and I was covered in blood.' He was treated in hospital and later discharged.
A witness reported seeing a man walking along the street shortly before the explosion, police said.
Varsamis has worked for many years at Diavata prison, west of Thessaloniki, which holds members of organised crime groups and individuals convicted of terrorism.
Two police officers, speaking anonymously because they were not authorised to comment on the investigation, told Reuters that authorities are focusing on possible involvement of criminal gangs rather than terrorist organisations. They added that Varsamis has already given a statement to investigators.
Greece's Organised Crime Unit is leading the investigation.

SEBI advocates ‘structural reform' in derivatives market, Chairman Tuhin Pandey says ‘protecting small investor': Report

Capital markets regulator, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), is 'advocating for structural reforms' in India's derivatives markets, according to a report by the Financial Times. Reuters noted that this moves comes after steps to limit participation of unprotected retail customers, and a temporary ban on United States trading firm Jane Street over alleged manipulation, the FT report added. Speaking to FT, SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey said the regulator is 'trying to curb unfair practices in the market to protect small investors, as the volumes have come down but not to the extent that is desirable.' Notably, in its latest report, released on July 7, SEBI found that 91 per cent of individual traders incurred net losses trading in futures and options (F&O) in FY25, with total losses exceeding ₹ 1 trillion. Earlier, speaking at the Future Proof Forensics 2025 event in Mumbai on August 2, Pandey had echoed similar sentiments, according to an ANI report. He noted that financial frauds in the Indian capital markets ranged from simple diversion of shareholder funds to use of complex structures and transactions to bypass regulatory safeguards, adding that SEBI has used forensic audits to uncover several such frauds in recent times. 'We must safeguard market integrity, the foundation that fuels investor participation and sustains capital formation,' Pandey said. Citing examples, Pandey said that SEBI found instances where listed companies engaged in fraudulent practices to siphon off investor funds; inflated financials by entering into circular transactions with a number of named lending entities; or siphoned off proceeds from preferential allotment, which should result in cash flow to the company. 'These are egregious cases. I'm not saying this is a generalised phenomenon. I'm just giving you certain examples of egregious cases which have been detected,' Pandey said, adding that the negative impact of such financial frauds on the securities market is tremendous and SEBI is doing forensic audits to uncover theses kind of financial frauds. Sha'Carri Richardson arrest — Coleman defends athlete after she is detained for domestic violence

Christian Coleman defended fellow sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson after she was reportedly arrested for pushing Coleman, saying on Sunday that she was a 'great person'. Reigning 100 metres world champion Richardson was arrested for domestic violence at a Seattle airport ahead of the U.S. Track & Field Championships, USA TODAY Sports reported on Friday. According to a police report, the 25-year-old, who won Olympic silver in the 100 at the Paris Games, allegedly pushed Coleman, who then fell into a nearby column after an argument. 'She's a human being and a great person. To me, she's the best female athlete in the world. I see it every day,' Coleman said. | Photo Credit: REUTERS Richardson was detained on the evening of July 27 and released the following day. 'For me personally, I feel like it was a sucky situation all around. I don't feel like she should have been arrested. I mean people have discussions and emotions and stuff like that,' 2019 world 100m champion Coleman told reporters at the Championships in Eugene, Oregon. 'She has things that she needs to work on for herself, of course. So do I, so do you, so does everybody. But I'm the type of guy who's in the business of extending grace, mercy and love... 'She's a human being and a great person. To me, she's the best female athlete in the world. I see it every day.' Who is Gina Huynh? Sean Diddy Combs' ex, ‘Victim 3' for prosecution, writes to judge for his release

The saga of Sean 'Diddy' Combs' trial continues. An ex-girlfriend of the hip hop mogul, who was supposed to testify against him but backed out at the last minute, has now written to the judge urging his release. Sean 'Diddy' Combs was convicted last month on two charges of transpiration to engage in prostitution.(Reuters) Virginia Huynh, or 'Gina', wants Diddy out on bail. She was initially the prosecution's witness, and was referred to as 'Victim 3'. Huynh was expected to take the stand or provide information, but when the trial started, prosecution alerted the court that they had lost touch with her and her attorney. Though she was under subpoena, they told the court that she may not turn up. Diddy's lawyers, meanwhile, have included her letter to the judge, where she identifies herself for the first time, and urges he be released on bail, saying that she does not feel he is a danger to society, and adding Diddy is a committed family man 'who has not been violent in many years.' Who is Virginia Huynh? Relationship with Diddy explained Huynh reportedly dated Sean Combs for five years. Speaking on Unwind with Tasha K, she added that between 2014 and 2019 Diddy was a difficult partner. She also detailed he was emotionally and physically abusive towards her. Reportedly Huynh met Diddy in 2014 and got pregnant the same year. When she informed him of it, he reportedly asked 'You're gonna get an abortion, right?'. He also offered her $50,000 for the procedure, she shared. Huynh reportedly got pregnant a second time, and Diddy told her to get an abortion again. She shared that he also took her to the Turks and Caicos islands, and gave her alcohol when she was pregnant. After they returned from the trip, he reportedly went to meet Cassie Ventura, who is now the prosecution's star witness, and another of Diddy's exes. Huynh was supposed to have the abortion the next day, but when she told him she needed more time, she was asked to 'get out' of his house. Combs was convicted last month on two charges of transpiration to engage in prostitution but acquitted on the racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges, which might have put him behind bars for a long time, or for life.
