How Wearing Less Makeup Can Boost Your Mental Health

How Wearing Less Makeup Can Boost Your Mental Health

In a world where beauty routines can feel more like full-time jobs, a quiet shift is happening. Call it skinimalism, the clean girl aesthetic, or just common sense, but minimalist beauty isn't just a fleeting trend. It's a reset. One built on authenticity, intention, and yes, a lot fewer steps.
At its core? A return to what makes us feel good, not just what looks good.
This shift toward simplicity didn't appear out of nowhere. It simmered beneath the surface during the pandemic, when many of us swapped full faces for bare skin on Zoom. As we got more comfortable seeing ourselves unfiltered, our routines began to reflect that ease.
Today's consumers are reaching for fewer products, but smarter ones. Think multitasking formulas and streamlined steps.
The low-maintenance look is here to stay. Dewy skin, brushed-up brows, a little cream blush, and lip balm, it's not about covering up. It's about enhancing what's already there. 'Minimalist beauty can certainly save time and reduce decision fatigue, which can contribute to a healthier mind,' says Cynthia Di Meo, Director of Global Artistry at Rare Beauty.
There's something undeniably freeing about leaving the house without a full face. And there's research to back that up. Studies show that women who wear less makeup often report higher self-esteem and emotional stability. On the flip side, frequent makeup wearers may be more prone to anxiety and self-consciousness.
The takeaway isn't to ditch makeup altogether, it's to redefine your relationship with it. As Di Meo puts it: 'What matters is how you feel and express yourself through makeup. There's no one-size-fits-all approach.'
Public figures are helping rewrite the script on beauty standards. Alicia Keys famously stepped back from glam entirely, penning an open letter in Lenny Letter where she declared: 'I don't want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul.'
Pamela Anderson, known for her iconic 90s bombshell glam, made headlines in 2023 during Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2024 when she arrived completely makeup-free. In a video interview with Vogue, she shared, 'I just felt like, without makeup, I was kind of doing something that was really freeing for me. Because I just kind of felt like it's okay to be me.' The moment struck a cultural nerve.
And Rare Beauty, Selena Gomez, has redefined beauty branding by putting mental health front and center. At the Rare Beauty Mental Health Summit, she shared, 'There are days where I step outside with no makeup and I don't care. It feels good not to care.' Her vulnerability, about therapy, bipolar disorder, and rejecting perfection, is refreshing.
'Makeup will only look as good as the skin beneath it,' says Di Meo. Translation: start with skincare.
Focus on hydration, protection, and balance. A gentle cleanser, nourishing moisturizer, and SPF are your foundation, literally.
Tinted moisturizers with SPF. Lip-and-cheek sticks. Brow gels that double as shapers. Streamlined routines don't mean sacrificing results.
Earthy tones like taupe, beige, and terracotta give a polished, natural glow. Boring is back.
Instead of a full beat, define what matters most to you. Maybe it's brushed-up brows. Maybe it's a swipe of brown mascara. Maybe it's nothing at all. Minimalist beauty is flexible.
'With innovative formulas, you can go from sheer to glam without switching products,' says Di Meo. You're not locked into one look, you're giving yourself room to shift.
When you're using fewer products, what's in those products becomes more important. That's where clean beauty comes in. As Di Meo reminds us, 'The quality of your makeup and properly removing it at the end of the day is what matters.' Minimalist doesn't mean neglect; it means intentional care.
This isn't about rules. So, whether your routine includes seven steps or just SPF and a smile, the point isn't perfection. Its presence.

33 Eye-Catching Products Worth Your Attention

A set of vintage-inspired spoons — if these aren't cottagecore, I don't know what is. Set them out at your next tea party and let the compliments roll in. Praise for your good taste? Sweeter than two lumps of sugar. A pack of glitter freckles you can apply like a temporary tattoo for a little extra razzle dazzle. The water-resistant speckles are sure to make you stand out, and they come right off with makeup remover. A jar of Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cinnadust seasoning so the best cereal flavor to extend past breakfast time. Now you can be known as the person who makes the best coffee — or ice cream, or apple slices, or buttered toast. (Cinnamon Toast Crunch cinnamon toast!) A Capri Blue Volcano-scented multipurpose cleaner — yes, that's right, the signature Anthropologie scent — to make cleaning feel extra rewarding. Now you can clean and leave behind a luxurious scent that'll have guests looking at your home in a new light. Was it always so chic in here? A double-patterned cardigan that lets you rock two looks at once! It's a great option for people who love animal print but refuse to pick what kind. It's not every day you see a sweater this out-of-the-box, so don't be surprised if you're voted "most likely to grace the cover of Vogue" by your coworkers. A can of whipped crea— I mean, sunscreen that just looks like dessert, so don't eat it, OK? This tasty-looking skincare will make you feel like a cherry pie instead of looking like one (baked to a crisp). A miniature Otamatone keychain for playing little ditties on the go. I can't tell you how many times I've been on a date and wished I had my little music note instrument so I could serenade them. This version has classic (public domain) tunes that they can play along with by pressing the button in rhythm to the song. A capybara mug — complete with a lil' orange hat! — to hold your morning tea or coffee. Who else could boast having such a unique coffee cup? A gelatin mold cake ring that will be the cherry on top of what will obviously be an A+ outfit. And oh look, the ring has a cherry too! Spectacular tortoiseshell wineglasses sure to impress your guests. Did you get these at a cute little boutique in upstate New York??? I won't tell if you won't. A thin scarf that comes in a variety of different patterns and can be styled in a myriad of different ways. Tie it around your neck, use it to keep your hair up, wrap it around your bag's strap — and then hope someone mistakes it for an Hermès Twilly. Or a — dare I say — *perfect* chiffon hair bow to make any hairdo instantly, heart-achingly romantic. Time to sit by a window and gaze out longingly. Really angle your head so everyone can see your new bow. A set of novelty toilet bolt caps (turtles! mushrooms! RUBBER DUCKS!) when you're super serious about having a home that guests know is chock-full of whimsy. Folks, even the toilet is gonna be cute. Just unscrew the boring caps and screw these on in their place. A pair of retro-style oval sunglasses so similar to Miu Miu, you could possibly trick friends into thinking you splurged on a $489 pair. Just be sure to correct them before they expect you to pay for lunch. Mystical Flames — a cool invention that turns your boring old fire into a rainbow fire. Everyone will secretly wonder if they're friends with a wizard. Liyalan shimmer body oil so you can feel like an iridescent pearl fresh from the ocean. If you're looking to add some sun-kissed dimension to your look, just apply this moisturizing formula to your skin with your hands or a makeup brush. A Case-Mate iconic waterproof beach tote sure to make a splash at your next swim meet. Look at the bow handles! It even comes with a waterproof phone pouch with a touchscreen window so you can snap pics of your new bag. A handful of rhinestone magnets so you can bedazzle your fridge or locker. Surely everyone wants a fridge that looks like it belongs to Miss Piggy? A customizable cookie stamp you can fit with any letters you'd like to spell out special messages. This is ideal for turning heads at birthdays and themed parties, but I'm also envisioning passive-aggressive baked goods. A pack of hair tinsel so you can fairy out with cute sparkles that add some dimension and otherworldly flair to your normally mundane 'do. Use single strands for a magical "just walked out of the lake to give King Arthur a sword" look or larger bunches for a Camp Rock vibe. A set of glittery butterfly hair clips that are certainly an upgrade to the ones we all wore in the '90s. Deck out your hair and strut like the forest nymph you are. And a mini scrunchie made to be worn without double-tying so it looks like a butterfly. If this doesn't earn you 1,000 compliments, nothing will. Twist Imagine No. 78, a fragrance inspired by Killian's Love, Don't Be Shy. If you're not familiar, it's Rihanna's signature scent and the reason why people say the singer smells like "heaven." Or Snif's Dead Dinosaur perfume — an ode to standing at the gas station and huffing the fumes. The garage-themed scent has notes of gasoline, pink pepper, ginger, cedar wood, and magnolia flower. One reviewer called it "funky but surprisingly wearable." A Dinghy Soap offering an easy magic trick that will make your kid's eyes pop out. The boat-shaped bar of soap floats, so bath time can double as a lesson on buoyancy. Are you the best parent or what? A double-buckle slides in biteable jelly styles that are — I'm sorry, I have to say it — cooler than Adidas slides! People at the pool, spa, and grocery store are gonna be chasing after you to find out where you snagged these '90s-inspired cuties. A super shaggy rug that could only be described as "groovy." The high pile is extra inviting, so don't be surprised when your guests opt for the floor over the couch. A candle boasting a summery scent reminiscent of cucumber, cut grass — and tennis balls! Your guests are gonna come in and be like, "why does your home smell like tennis?!" Cropped pants with trendy wide stripes that look a lot like a way more expensive pair I've been eyeing for so long, they sold out. Luckily, reviewers confirm these look amazing, fit comfortably, and have just the right amount of stretch. A ~cat-a-pult~ so you can pelt your desk neighbor when they start chewing too loudly. Take that, Pete from accounting! He won't bring tuna fish again after seeing what you have in arsenal. A set of pearlescent gel polishes to help you enter your mermaid era. The shimmery colors are showstoppers on their own, but some talented reviewers added bubbles and designs on top for an extra wow factor. A mini tiki bar you can set up in half an hour, meaning you can be slinging jungle birds and blue Hawaiians that same day. The waterproof furniture set comes with four chairs and plenty of storage for booze or juice. Is your backyard the new Margaritaville? Time to break out the blender and find out. A Pink Princess philodendron, a once-rare and still-extremely-coveted variegation in the houseplant community that will bring a pop of color to your home. What was once an impossible find is now yours — somehow for under $30. A heart-stoppingly adorable night-light offering a soft glow in your hallway or bathroom. It comes with eight different color modes so when people come over, you can say, "oh yeah, that's just my glowing wall puppy." A mini metal side table that provides some much-needed storage space *but more importantly* gives your home an eye-popping splash of color. Oh, and it costs under $40!

Office Hours: How Marianna Hewitt Bridges California Ease With Parisian Polish

'Some days are dedicated to creative work like approving product packaging, reviewing campaign edits, or concepting new launches,' she tells me. 'Others are full of back-to-back calls and Zooms, but I try my best to build in space for quiet focus time, but I'm often moving between things quickly.' Her everyday, it seems, is about embodying the actual feel of a summer Friday, prioritizing well-being before clocking out for the day. How does Marianna find her zen? Every morning starts with three Ms—matcha, movement, and meditation—and a no-fuss skin-care routine. 'I'm always listening to podcasts during my walks or while getting ready and if I hear something interesting, whether it's a new habit, or wellness ritual, I'll try to incorporate it into my routine and see how it makes me feel.' Through it all, Marianna remains undeniably put together. It is her taste—and general approach to life—that's most compelling. Her style, she describes, combines California ease with Parisian polish—relying upon 'pulled-together but comfortable, elevated essentials I can wear from morning to night.' The art to her beauty look continues this laissez-faire approach. 'During the week, I keep it simple and low-maintenance,' maybe air drying her hair to avoid heat damage and embrace her natural waves, with just a hint of makeup. 'I always have on concealer, lip liner, and Lip Butter Balm—those are my everyday staples.' Ahead, she shares with Vogue her go-to beauty and wellness essentials that get her ready for a packed day ahead—from the mini edit she keeps in her bag at all times to the everyday things that keep her refreshed and prepared no matter where she is. Photo: Courtesy of Marianna Hewitt Little Mood Lifters Hewitt keeps a 'joy list' of the little things that lift her mood and sunlight is at the top. 'Luckily in LA, I can step outside for some fresh air and a reset,' she says. 'If I can pair it with a walk, a meditation, or just moving my body, it always makes a big difference.' She likely doing so in her APL Zipline sneakers and Oura ring.

Selena Gomez launches Rare Beauty perfume and it's the best celebrity fragrance we've ever smelt

Rare Beauty is at it again, releasing game-changing products in a market that feels hard to innovate in like there Soft Pinch Liquid Blush and Tinted Lip Oils. With Rare Eau de Parfum, Selena Gomez's brand has stepped into the world of fine fragrance for the first time, and I haven't been so impressed with a celebrity perfume in years. Team Cosmo was lucky enough to get our hands on the much-anticipated launch over two months ago to test it before it hit shelves. So yes, I've been carrying around this little vial of top-secret juice for weeks, fibbing whenever someone asks me, 'You smell great, what are you wearing?' And now, finally, we can spill the tea. So, below I'm sharing my thoughts on the new launch that hits Sephora on the 7th of August for £71 (50ml). Rare Eau de Parfum notes Top: Caramel, Pistachio, Pink Pepper Heart: Vanilla, Ginger, Cocoa Beans Dry: Sandalwood, Tonka Beans, Skin Musks What does Rare Eau de Parfum smell like? Grown-up, yet girlish and feminine without the need to be floral. To me, it smells like nuzzling into a fuzzy knit co-ord set that already has some of your favourite perfume on it from the last time you had it on. On first spray, and when you sniff it in the bottle, it really smells quite sweet – you can only overwhelmingly smell the caramel, pistachio and vanilla melding together and while it really smells like a fun, youthful bubble bath, I immediately thought I would hate it. If I were to judge it by its opening notes only, this would be an entirely different review. As it settles in, though, the sandalwood really pulls through, and it becomes a scent you will be obsessed with. It wears really well on me, as time passes it becomes a scent I like more and more throughout the day, to the point that I feel a little reluctant to re-spray, in case it ruins what the scent has become. A note on projection, now I don't think anyone was expecting a #beastmode type of perfume from our girl Selena, but in case you were wondering this is a personal fragrance. When people would comment on my scent, it would be when they reached in for a hug, not when I walked into a room. Similar scents to Rare Eau de Parfum Thanks to the pink pepper at the top and the skin musks at the base, it has a real sense of Glossier You about it and the buttercream that specifically gives Glossier You Rêve that vanillic, lingering sweetness is super similar in Rare Eau de Parfum. A note on the bottle Beauty can be so slapdash when it comes to inclusivity, and especially when it comes to accessibility being top of mind during product creation. But, for this launch, the team worked with a certified hand therapist and a team of packaging engineers to create an ergonomic fragrance bottle that makes dispensing the bottle comfortable for those with dexterity issues.
