Ian Smith, beloved by millions as Harold Bishop from Neighbours, has opened up about his ongoing battle with cancer and the surprising turn of events that has even his medical team taken aback.
The cherished Aussie actor, 86, appeared on The Morning Show on Channel Seven this past week, providing an encouraging update on his wellbeing after receiving a rather bleak initial diagnosis. "I have got cancer. I know that because doctors tell me I have. But apart from that... No pain. I was supposed to die in March," Smith shared openly.
"I am having the easiest ride, seriously." For the latest TV and showbiz news sign up to our newsletter .
He was diagnosed with pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma, an uncommon and aggressive form of lung cancer, in December and was told by doctors the disease was "non-fixable". His prognosis was grim, reports the Mirror..
However following his enrolment in what he refers to as a "guinea pig" experimental treatment scheme he has surpassed predictions.
"I want to go forever," he remarked with a grin.

"I don't want to play Harold anymore but I don't want to stop acting."
Despite the seriousness of his diagnosis Smith notes that the treatment process has come with a silver lining. "I've possibly never felt better. Everyone looks at me and says: 'Look at your hair'," he chuckled.
"They are all jealous I've got so much hair. I went through the treatment, started to lose my hair, and went totally bald. I then went onto the immunotherapy and got a head full of hair... not just hair, but curly hair."
He's realistic but hopeful, sharing that he now looks forward to 'a year, maybe two' more of life than doctors initially projected. And despite stepping away from Neighbours the veteran performer insists he's not stepping away from the craft that shaped his life. 'I'm not cured,' he admitted. 'But I'm here. And I feel fine.'
His last scenes in the beloved Australian series were deeply moving. Harold's heartfelt announcement that he was relocating to Port Douglas, Queensland, left loyal viewers weeping.
Reflecting on his final scenes Smith expressed that being encircled by his fellow actors made it all the more touching. "I love them all dearly," he exclaimed. "They're like family."
Smith took on the role of Harold back in 1987 and quickly established himself as a fan favourite, celebrated for his character's kindness, fortitude, and remarkable comebacks following various absences.
Now, in real life, Smith is living a storyline even soap writers couldn't dream up. In a recent interview with BBC Radio 5 Live he spoke candidly about how far he's come since doctors first gave him just months to live. 'I've got cancer, yes, I'm going to die soon but I seem to be defying the odds, which is good,' he said.
Earlier in January, Smith disclosed to TV Week that after undergoing three treatment regimes involving immunotherapy and chemotherapy his tumour had started to diminish. This positive change boosts his quiet determination.

Holly Valance and Nick Candy divorce turns messy as former soap star threatens to take him 'for every penny'
Holly Valance 's shock split from billionaire property tycoon Nick Candy is set to get messy, according to new reports. It was revealed last week that the former Neighbours star, 42, had parted ways with her businessman husband, 52, after 13 years of marriage. Now, friends close to the former pop star have claimed Valance has vowed to 'take every penny' from Candy, in what is shaping up to be an acrimonious split. 'Holly is incredibly upset. Her main concern is, and always will be, for their two daughters,' a source told The Sun this week. 'But when it comes to the divorce, she's made it clear she wants what she's owed and will take Nick for every penny. She insists that she is the injured party in this.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Holly, who is understood to have signed a pre-nuptial agreement before her lavish 2012 Beverly Hills wedding, stands to walk away with millions. 'It's been a very painful time for Holly and she has told friends that the split was not on her terms,' they said. 'Whatever the sum ends up being, it will be in the tens of millions of pounds.' It comes after the former Neighbours star was spotted for the first time without her wedding ring. Holly was seen last Saturday arriving solo from a flight at Heathrow's Terminal 5 in west London without her sparkler. The couple are parents to daughters Luka, 11, and Nova, seven, and friends say the pair's priority has always been their daughters and will continue to be so during this very 'difficult period'. A source told MailOnline: 'They have been living separate lives for a long time, he's travelling a lot. 'Nick has businesses in Dubai and London, The Reform Party.' A family friend added to The Sun – who first reported the couple's split: 'The joint parenting of their two amazing daughters remains their top priority. 'They've had to juggle a demanding lifestyle. Between family, public life, and Nick's intense work commitments, it's been a tough balance.' The estranged couple were last pictured together in March as they enjoyed a swanky lunch in London. A spokesman for the couple said: 'This is a private matter and we will not be making any further comment.' They wed in 2012 in a lavish £3million (AUD$6.2 million) ceremony with guests including Sir Elton John, Simon Cowell, as well as Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. Together they have enjoyed a lavish lifestyle and previously lived in a two-storey Hyde Park penthouse worth £175million (AUD$364.4 million), making it Britain's most expensive flat. The pair later downsized to a £10million (AUD$20.8 million) countryside mansion in the Cotswolds, which they have been renovating. In 2020, Mr Candy gifted his wife a £26million (AUD$54.1 million) superyacht, despite the mother-of-two having spoken in the past of suffering from sea sickness. The businessman, who previously poured millions into Conservative coffers, became Reform UK leader Nigel Farage's party treasurer earlier this year. Both he and his former singer and actress wife have made little secret of their support for Mr Farage – and joined him and Donald Trump for dinner in 2022 at the current US President's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. She also hosted fundraisers for Reform and they were in the audience when Mr Farage returned as party leader last year. Valance launched her acting career in 1999 and played Felicity Scully in Neighbours until 2002. The Melbourne-born actress later moved to America and starred in several popular US movies and TV shows, including Taken, Entourage and Prison Break. She also topped the UK singles chart in 2002 with Kiss Kiss, following it up with Down Boy which reached number two and State Of Mind which made eighth place. She semi-retired from the acting industry in 2015, although she made a brief cameo on Neighbours in 2022. Holly raised eyebrows last year after slamming Greta Thunberg as a 'demonic little gremlin' as she claimed Australia has become 'too woke' in a TV interview. Holly criticised climate activist Thunberg to podcast host Christopher Hope, saying: 'I don't understand why you have this, like, demonic little gremlin high priestess of climatism as the goddess in classrooms, Greta.

This evening's performance in Cardiff represents more than a decade since the Gallagher brothers, Noel and Liam, shared a stage together. The group made their entrance to 'F**king in the Bushes' before launching into their opening number 'Hello'. The packed venue erupted in applause to welcome back the legendary band. Among those in attendance were EastEnders favourite Danny Dyer and Line Of Duty star Vicky McClure. Television presenter Vernon Kay was also photographed outside the Principality Stadium. Liam addressed the enthusiastic crowd, saying: "Hey, beautiful people, it's been too long," with notable attendees including Glastonbury founder Emily Eavis, Dominic Mohan, and Andy Goldstein. "It was not just a genre, but a reactionary and patriotic cultural response, celebrating British identity, working-class roots, and everyday life. To everyone who's there when they walk on the stage at 8.15pm will be a piece of history." Reflecting on the photograph, she continued: "That night was a lot of fun can't remember what after party gig it was .. back then there was always one which I was in charge of organising through @creationrecords money and fun had no limit back then." Meg recently found herself having to refute rumours of a reconciliation after sharing images of them embracing. Speaking to the Irish Mirror in 2020, Meg revealed she previously suffered from severe PTSD. She explained: "I came through the marriage. Everything was public. At the end of the day I did not have the cog or the PR world that that person (Noel) had. "I was just the ex-wife. I had nobody. I didn't know what to do. I didn't have a press agent, wasn't famous, I just had a daughter. I used to get terrible PTSD. In 1997 I was the third most written about woman. It was Lady Diana, The Spice Girls and me." According to their announcement: "As the shows are getting closer, Oasis promoters may be able to release a very limited number of additional tickets for sale once final sight lines are checked and the production is fine tuned. These final production releases will happen over the coming days."

Noel Gallagher's ex Meg Mathews walks out of Oasis gig before painful song
EXCLUSIVE: Noel Gallagher's ex Meg Mathews cheered him on from the audience during his Oasis comeback gig in Cardiff, but she left early - before one of the band's more painful songs Meg Mathews left Oasis' Cardiff gig early this evening - as they returned for a special and heartbreaking song. Meg had been on hand to cheer on her ex-husband, Noel Gallagher, on the first night of the tour. She was spotted arriving today, with a source telling the Mirror: "After posting about her ex-husband for weeks, Meg Mathews had a prime seat for watching the band. She was in great spirits before the set, watching Richard Ashcroft with pals." However, she left before the encore and was seen departing the show before the band came back to sing some of their biggest songs including Don't Look Back In Anger, Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova. Wonderwall may be a sore subject for Meg, as Noel had originally claimed he'd written it on a rainy Tuesday night for his girlfriend. He said back in 1996: "It's about my girlfriend, Meg Mathews. She had a company which folded and she was feeling a bit sorry for herself. The sentiment is that there was no point in her feeling down, she has to sort my life out for me because I'm in bits had the time." However, in 2002, Noel did a complete U-turn and insisted Wonderwall actually had nothing to do with Meg. He said: "The meaning of that song was taken away from me by the media who jumped on it, and how do you tell your missus it's not about her once she's read it is? It's a song about an imaginary friend who's gonna come and save you from yourself." Meg even commented about the backtrack. In 2005, she said: "All of a sudden, when I was getting divorced, he said it wasn't about me, so I don't really understand." It comes just days after Meg was forced to deny that she and Noel had decided to give their relationship another go. She had been sharing throwback snaps on social media, prompting fans to believe that they were back together following the breakdown of Noel's second marriage. Alongside the pics, fans have been desperate to see them reunite. One wrote in the comments: "Please tell us you are back together again," whilst another added: "So nice to see you still love and support your ex. So healthy to have that bond. Especially when you have a beautiful daughter together." A third shared: "Meg these pics are the best!! You'll always have a bond, you share an amazing child who is a credit to you both," with a fourth writing: "The best era, and the best couple, wish you two got back together." But Meg said it was a firm "no" when asked if she and Noel were an item again. Get Oasis updates straight to your WhatsApp!
