Brentford chief explains why Frank successor was decided before he joined Spurs
Brentford have promoted Keith Andrews from set-piece coach to head coach after just a year at the club following the long-planned-for departure of Thomas Frank to Tottenham
Brentford had long ago considered replacing Thomas Frank because they knew the Dane would be poached by a Premier League rival. The Bees have appointed Keith Andrews as Frank's successor after Tottenham came calling and the process has now been explained by the club's director of football Phil Giles.
Frank was Brentford boss for nine years, playing a crucial role in helping to establish the west London club as a Premier League regular. He left earlier in June to replace Ange Postecoglou at Spurs, leaving Brentford with a decision to make.
They have done so quickly, promoting Andrews from set-piece coach to head coach. The 44-year-old former Republic of Ireland midfielder will embark upon his first head coach position in the 2025/26 campaign and will have a major job on his hands.
Filling Frank's shoes is hard enough, but Andrews, who joined Brentford last summer from Sheffield United, will also have to deal with the losses of key players. Winger Bryan Mbeumo is the subject of a £60million bid from Manchester United, while captain Christian Norgaard is heading to Arsenal for £9.3m.
Brentford have developed a reputation for being a well-run club and Giles is sure Andrews will be able to build on Frank's work. 'With Keith being an internal appointment and promotion, the thought process about how to replace Thomas started many years ago,' he told the club website.
'When we replaced Dean Smith, we had Thomas lined up. While we never promised him the job, we had the idea that Thomas could potentially take over from Dean. It's the same principle here. When we appoint coaches, we always have an idea about whether they could potentially step up.
'When we became aware that Tottenham were interested in Thomas, we had a more detailed process, speaking to our staff but also arranging to speak with some people externally. That process started before Thomas had even formally left because we knew the direction of travel.'
While this is his first head coaching position, Andrews has picked up a wealth of experience working as an assistant at Sheffield United, the Republic of Ireland and MK Dons. 'Keith is a very, very good person. He has good values and fits our culture well. He gets on with everyone, he's very open and he's a learner,' Giles added.
'He joined us a year ago as set-piece coach because he wanted a new experience. He wanted to be at our club and to learn. That says a lot about him. He's also covered many other parts of the game so he's well qualified to do the job.'
Andrews said: 'It's an amazing place to be and I've felt that for 12 months now. That will remain. It's really important to me to have that vibe around the football club, that energy.
'There are a lot of words that are preached in sporting environments, like culture, and they're not lived, whereas they are lived here on a daily basis. I think it's really important to keep that humility that we have as a football club and continue to grow.'

The Argentina midfielder, signed from the Portuguese giants for a then British record £106.8million two years ago, took time to find his feet at Stamford Bridge. But he excelled in the second half of the 2024-25 season, finishing the campaign with eight goals, and has continued to shine at the Club World Cup. 'So his contribution this season has been top and I am sure next season will be even better.' Despite that, Fernandez could face competition for his place after Maresca suggested he sees Brazilian Andrey Santos more as an attacking player than a defensive one. The highly-rated 21-year-old has rejoined the club this summer after a successful loan spell at Strasbourg and made his debut as a second-half substitute against Esperance. Maresca said: 'His season has been very good but I think you need time to adapt. 'In terms of position, I see Andrey in this moment in more like Enzo's position than Romeo's (Lavia) position. 'The Premier League demands (players) to be physically strong. In this moment, I see Andrey more of an attacking player than defensive in the field.' Maresca added that he hopes 19-year-old defender Josh Acheampong will stay with the club despite being linked with Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund. He said: 'My idea or my plan with Josh is quite clear. I think he potentially can be a top defender for this club. I feel the best plan for Josh is to be with us.' Maresca would also like England international Trevoh Chalobah to stay, but offered no guarantees. He said: 'All the players that are here with us, I don't want to lose them but when the transfer window is open, unfortunately, anything can happen – not only for Trevoh, for (all) the 25 players of the squad.' Maresca expects a tight contest against Benfica. He said: 'It's going to be a balanced game, a tough game. In this kind of game the small details are very important.'

He combines well, turns and surges at the opposing defence and - and he showed against Ulsan of South Korea, he strikes a mean free-kick. Arias was by far the best Fluminense player in the side that went down 4-0 to Manchester City in the Intercontinental final at the end of 2023. He demonstrated that he could hold his own in such company, and it is surprising that major European clubs did not make a move. Another Colombian international midfielder who has made his name in Brazil is Richard Rios of Palmeiras. His is a fascinating story. Rios was a futsal player, representing his country in an international tournament in Rio. Flamengo liked what they saw, and offered him an 11-a-side career. Rangy, classy, dynamic and competitive - sometimes too competitive - Rios had an excellent Copa America last year and is confirming the good impression in the current tournament. Amorim makes special request to Man Utd board in bid to avoid second nightmare
Manchester United endured a woeful first season under the tutelage of Rubem Amorim and it appears that the Portuguese is keen on some more changes behind the scenes at Old Trafford Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has requested his former trusted ally Acacio Valentim be added to his staff as part of another coaching restructure. The Portuguese head coach is determined to avoid another woeful campaign after a tricky first season at the helm. After replacing Erik ten Hag following a move from Sporting Lisbon, he led United to 14th in the Premier League, while they were defeated in the Europa League final by Spurs. And ahead of his second season with the club, Amorim has asked for some help behind the scenes. According to Portuguese outlet Record, Amorim has made a personal request to United chiefs to make a move for Acacio Valentim. The 49-year-old previously worked alongside his countryman as a coach at former club Braga, with Amorim keen to be reunited at Old Trafford. Talks are reportedly underway over a move to the UK, with Valentim a free agent having exited the Portuguese club this summer. His move would become the latest reshuffle behind the scenes since Amorim's arrival. Erik ten Hag 's former staff members including Ruud van Nistelrooy all left - the Dutchman has now been sacked by Leicester. Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel all also left following Amorim's arrival. Set piece coach Andreas Georgson was initially retained but appeared to take on a new role in December after Amorim confirmed that his assistant Carlos Fernandes was instead at the forefront of set piece planning. Explaining the change after a clash with Arsenal, he said: "The thinking is Carlos is responsible for set pieces, different stuff. Andreas is also there to help. That's it. That's the reason. "I think if you follow Premier League for a long time you can see that they (Arsenal) are also big players for that. And you can see it in every occasion that (Bukayo) Saka and (Gabriel) Martinelli has one against one, a lot of times they go outside and cross. They already know if the cross is going well, they can score. If it's a corner, they can score. "So we have to be better on that situation but like in every area of our game we need time to improve also. But you can see in all Arsenal games every team has a problem with that." Georgson eventually left his role in May of this year, while a number of prominent backroom figures have also departed Old Trafford over recent weeks.
