SWCORP ensures top-tier waste management services during LIMA'25
Chief executive officer Khalid Mohamed said 380 cleaners, supervised by 19 enforcement officers, will be on island-wide, supported by the latest cleaning technology.
'High-tech machines, such as Glutton vacuum units and road sweepers, have been deployed at public hotspots and along major routes for more intensive street cleaning.
'We have assigned 80 staff to a litter-picking initiative targeting road shoulders on key thoroughfares,' he told reporters at Kuah Jetty Terminal today.
The agency is also stepping up enforcement to shut down illegal waste hotspots and a speak-up campaign that encourages the public to call out littering.
'SWCorp has launched public awareness campaigns through video screenings at high-traffic locations to highlight the importance of proper solid waste management,' he said.
He added that user-friendly, informative bins have been placed in key areas to shift the public mindset toward the importance of waste separation.
'This initiative is showing promising results. During inspections, our personnel found that some waste had already been sorted, which makes the cleaning process much easier,' he said.
Meanwhile, SWCorp is also showcasing several sculptures made by locals from recycled materials in the waiting area at the Kuah Jetty Terminal.
'We've also displayed sculptures crafted from waste materials at the airport, and aim to expand this initiative further in the future,' he added.

Statewide scrub-up for tourism push in Johor

Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) chief executive officer Khalid Mohamed said 'Operasi Tanpa Debu' (Dust-Free Operation) was aimed at enhancing cleanliness in high-traffic zones in anticipation of increased tourists for the coming year. 'Besides being rubbish-free, we want the city to be dust-free and dirt-free to better welcome our visitors. Khalid (centre) says scheduled cleaning work at tourist spots in Iskandar Puteri and Mersing are also underway. 'We want the streets to look like those in developed countries – well-maintained and always looking new. 'This will no longer be just a vision,' said Khalid during a cleaning operation at Legaran Segget, which involved three high-pressure cleaning lorries and a road-sweeper machine, supported by 15 cleaning personnel. He added that SWCorp, in collaboration with SWM Environment and Johor Baru City Council, began the cleaning operation in June on a scheduled basis at key public areas. 'We started work in tourist-oriented areas such as Puteri Harbour in Iskandar Puteri, Laman Kreatif Kluang and Dataran Kembara in Mersing. 'Public spaces such as markets, transport terminals, walkways and other tourist spots are being prioritised,' said Khalid, adding that the cleaning process was completely chemical-free and relied only on water pressure. He added that SWCorp has taken this new approach across the state, starting with areas that have a high volume of tourists. 'We understand that cleanliness and aesthetic appeal in these areas will attract more tourists to explore the surrounding communities,' said Khalid. 'Legaran Segget will soon have brand-new look and visitors from beyond Johor and Malaysia will return home with stories of Johor Baru's charm and beauty.'

Johor's clean drive hits illegal dumps

State housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said he was briefed by Johor Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) on its ongoing operations and enforcement activities carried out so far this year. 'I was given a comprehensive briefing on various enforcement actions, cleanliness operations and solid waste management initiatives across all districts in Johor. 'These efforts include actions to curb illegal waste dumping, issuance of notices, investigations of premises, and prosecution measures to ensure compliance with the law,' he said when contacted. Mohd Jafni said the implementation of statewide initiatives such as Ops Cuci, Ops No Dust and compliance inspections on premises and construction waste management demonstrated a strong integrated approach to waste control and urban cleanliness. 'Based on data from Johor SWCorp, a total of 517 sites were cleaned under Ops Cuci this year, while 186 illegal dumpsites have been identified and shut down,' he added. Mohd Jafni, who is also Bukit Permai assemblyman, said that additionally, 95 construction waste compliance checks and 108 inspections on industrial, commercial and institutional premises were also carried out. 'These achievements show that the state government is serious in taking firm action against irresponsible behaviour that affects the image of residential areas and city centres,' he said. He further said public spaces such as Puteri Harbour, Legaran Segget, Laman Maharani and Dataran Kembara were cleaned using road sweepers and water jets under Ops No Dust. 'These efforts support Johor's image as a clean, modern and investor-friendly state. 'We want our city centres to be more sustainable and liveable for all. 'SWCorp also reported that 20,522 premises under the Separation-at-Source programme have been inspected so far this year,' he said. The programme requires residential homes and other properties receiving waste collection services to separate their rubbish at source, in compliance with Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672). 'Ensuring proper segregation of waste is essential. 'It is a key step towards fostering sustainable practices and reducing landfill dependence. 'A total of RM1.64mil in fines has been collected through court cases since 2018, underlining the state's commitment to strict enforcement of environmental laws,' said Mohd Jafni. He said that looking ahead, Johor was developing new sanitary landfill facilities in Bukit Payung near Mersing as well as Pontian and Muar to strengthen its long-term waste management capacity. 'I truly appreciate the transparency and work ethic shown by SWCorp Johor. 'Their dedication and thorough reporting reflect their commitment to making Johor a leader in urban cleanliness,' he said. Mohd Jafni added that the state government would continue to support SWCorp's efforts, which are aligned with Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi's 'Maju Johor' agenda that places priority on efficient governance and the people's quality of life.
