Iran says it's considering US offer to restart nuclear talks
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also said that Iran needs guarantees it won't be attacked again if the talks don't succeed.
Iran's foreign minister said the US is trying to revive nuclear talks with Tehran while stressing that his country is in no hurry to resume negotiations.
'The Americans insist on returning to the negotiating table,' Mr Abbas Araghchi said in televised remarks on July 12, adding that Iran has received 'multiple messages.'
Tehran is weighing its options regarding the timing, location, and structure of potential talks, but is 'in no rush to enter into reckless negotiations.'
Mr Araghchi served as lead negotiator in Oman-mediated talks with the US, which collapsed after Israel launched a
surprise attack on Iran's nuclear sites on June 13 .
The strikes killed several top military and nuclear officials, and hit densely populated urban areas as well as Tehran's Evin Prison.
His remarks follow US President Donald Trump's
July 7 dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, where he said he was open to lifting sanctions on Iran.
Mr Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, who led the US delegation in the earlier talks, said a meeting with Iran was expected within the week.

Mr Araghchi also said that Iran needs guarantees it won't be attacked again if the talks don't succeed. 'Some assurances have been expressed that there will be no war again, and we are reviewing these,' he said without elaborating.
'If an opportunity arises to secure the interests of the Iranian people, we won't miss it. The doors of diplomacy are never closed.'
The US joined the Israeli assault on June 22, striking three Iranian nuclear facilities.
Mr Trump claimed to have 'obliterated' Iran's nuclear infrastructure, while Iranian officials said the sites were 'badly damaged' but not destroyed.
In response, Iran fired missiles at a Qatari air base used by US troops. A ceasefire between Iran and Israel took effect later in June and has held so far, despite both sides accusing each other of violations.
Mr Araghchi also reiterated that Iran's cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency 'has not stopped,' though he added that monitoring requests will now be reviewed 'on a case-by-case basis' and handled exclusively through Iran's Supreme National Security Council. BLOOMBERG

Ukraine's top commander says troops standing firm outside key city

REUTERS/Anatolii Stepanov/File Photo Ukraine's top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said on Friday his forces were standing firm in defending a key city on the eastern front of the three-year war. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy praised Ukraine's forces in their defence of Pokrovsk, a logistics hub in eastern Donetsk region that has weathered months of Russian attempts to capture it in their troops' slow advance westward. Syrskyi said he had presented a report to the president describing the challenges facing Ukrainian troops along the 1,000-km (620-mile) front. "Most attention was focused on the Pokrovsk and Novopavlivka sectors, where our soldiers are courageously containing intense pressure and destroying the Russian aggressor," Syrskyi wrote on the Telegram messaging app. "The enemy is continuing to deploy its tactic of small infantry groups, but has proved powerless on its attempts to seize Pokrovsk. Today, they tried to break through with sabotage groups but were exposed and destroyed by Ukrainian defenders." Zelenskiy, in his account of the commander's report, singled out for praise those defending Pokrovsk, particularly from sabotage groups "trying to advance and enter Ukrainian cities and villages. No such Russian group will have a chance of survival." Syrskyi issued his report at the end of a week of upheaval in the government, now focused on boosting domestic arms production. The outgoing Defence Minister, Rustem Umerov, was named chairman of the National Security and Defence Council and told to "intensify" peace talks with Russia. Russia's military has been advancing through Donetsk region, with the Russian Defence Ministry announcing almost daily the capture of villages on the approaches to Pokrovsk. The capture of one such village, Popiv Yar, was announced on Thursday. Ukraine has reported some successes in pushing back Russian troops from the area in recent months. Pokrovsk is a road and rail hub used to supply other frontline towns. Most of Pokrovsk's pre-war population of 60,000 has been evacuated. Ex-Australian PM Morrison to testify before US House panel on China
Find out what's new on ST website and app. FILE PHOTO: Former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison speaks during the Yushan Forum in Taipei, Taiwan October 11, 2023. REUTERS/Annabelle Chih/File Photo WASHINGTON - Former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison will testify at a U.S. House panel hearing on Wednesday about countering China's "economic coercion against democracies," the committee said on Friday. Former U.S. ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel will also testify before the House Select Committee on China. Relations with China, already rocky after Australia banned Huawei from its 5G broadband network in 2018, cooled further after Canberra called for an independent investigation into the origins of COVID-19. China responded by imposing tariffs on Australian commodities, including wine and barley and limited imports of Australian beef, coal and grapes, moves described by the United States as "economic coercion." Morrison was defeated in a bid for reelection in 2022. Reuters reported this week Canberra is close to an agreement with Beijing that would allow Australian suppliers to ship five trial canola cargoes to China, sources familiar with the matter said, a move towards ending a years-long freeze in the trade. China imposed 100% tariffs on Canadian canola meal and oil this year amid strained diplomatic ties. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited China this week, underscoring a warming of ties. Israel says missile launched by Yemen's Houthis was intercepted
Yemen's Houthi militant group said late on Friday it had attacked Israel's Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv with a ballistic missile, while the Israeli military said the projectile was intercepted after air raid sirens were triggered in several parts of the country. Most of the dozens of missiles and drones the Houthis have launched at Israel have been intercepted or fallen short. Israel has carried out a series of retaliatory strikes. The Iran-aligned Houthis have been firing at Israel and attacking shipping lanes. Traffic through the Red Sea, a critical waterway for the world's oil and commodities, has dropped since the militia began targeting ships in November 2023 in what the group said was solidarity with Palestinians against Israel in the Gaza war. Arab mediators Qatar and Egypt, backed by the United States, have hosted more than 10 days of talks on a U.S.-backed proposal for a 60-day truce in the 21-month war that has laid waste to the Palestinian enclave. Earlier on Friday, Hamas said that while the group favours reaching an interim truce, if such an agreement is not reached in current negotiations it could revert to insisting on a full package deal to end the conflict. Israel and Hamas have repeatedly accused each other of obstructing progress towards a deal. REUTERS
