Four CHLA Units Receive Beacon Healthcare Awards from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses
The AACN honors healthcare units that deliver excellent care to patients and their families with the prestigious Beacon Award designation. Recipients demonstrate superior patient clinical outcomes, patient experience, patient safety, quality improvement, work environment, professional nursing practices and opportunities for nursing education and certification growth.

Four units at the hospital were honored. The hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit earned Gold Beacon Award recognition while the Heart Institute's Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit earned a Silver Beacon Award. "Additionally, the hospital's two separate 5th floor medical surgical units – 5 East and 5 West – were also honored by the AACN. These two units provide services for children requiring specialty care in Diabetes, Cystic Fibrosis, and infants needing care after leaving the hospital's Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation Newborn and Infant Critical Care Unit. The 5th floor teams also provide care that specializes in respiratory illnesses and infectious diseases, and for patients requiring long-term home mechanical ventilation."
The Cardiovascular Acute Care Unit also has an existing Gold-level Beacon Award through March 2026, bringing CHLA's current total of Beacon Award-recognized units to five.
To determine Beacon status, quantitative and qualitative data from each unit is evaluated and compared against units from other hospitals submitting for the recognition, reflecting a competitive process that CHLA successfully navigated. The data submitted for the Beacon Awards in 2024 looks at a variety of hospital acquired conditions that are identified as "nursing sensitive indicators" – where the quality of nursing can play a role in the clinical outcomes.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infection rate
Central line-associated bloodstream infection rate
Data measuring both falls with injury rate and injuries to the skin caused by pressure or friction
Nursing experience data; nursing professional certification rates; and nursing turnover data

These Two Simple Interventions May Cut CRC Recurrence Risk
This transcript has been edited for clarity. Hello. I'm Dr David Johnson, professor of medicine and chief of gastroenterology at Eastern Virginia Medical School and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. New guidelines have lowered the age to begin screening for colon cancer to 45 years old. Although this change is positive, we're still seeing advanced cancer in younger patients who haven't been screened in time. Once diagnosed, these patients undergo surgery and chemotherapy and often return to us asking, 'What can I do now to help myself?' Two recent studies highlight interventions that are simple, affordable, and actionable today: exercise and aspirin. Let's take a closer look at the results. Exercise's Risk Reduction Potential The idea that exercise reduces cancer recurrence and mortality is supported by observational data. The mechanistic effects behind this have been ascribed to metabolic growth factors, inflammatory changes, immune function changes, and perhaps even positive impact on sleep. A study just published in The New England Journal of Medicine examined structured exercise after adjuvant chemotherapy for colon cancer. The phase 3 randomized CHALLENGE trial, mostly conducted at Canadian and Australian centers, recruited patients with resected stage II or III colon cancer (9.8% and 90.2%, respectively) who had completed adjuvant chemotherapy. Patients with recurrences within a year of diagnosis were excluded, as they were more likely to have highly aggressive, biologically active disease. Patients were randomized to receive healthcare education materials alone or in conjunction with a structured exercise program over a 3-year follow-up period. The exercise intervention, delivered in person or virtually, focused on increasing recreational aerobic activity over baseline by at least 10 metabolic equivalent task (MET). An increment of 10 MET hours per week is not too vigorous. It is essentially the equivalent of adding about 45-60 minutes of brisk walking or 25-30 minutes of jogging 3-4 times a week. Patients were asked to increase MET over the first 6 months and then maintain or further increase the amount over the next 2.5 years. They were permitted to structure their own exercise program by choosing the type, frequency, intensity, and duration of aerobic exercise. The primary endpoint was disease-free survival, with secondary endpoints assessing overall survival, patient-reported outcomes, and other outcomes. Although designed to detect differences at 3 years, follow-up was also performed out to 5 and 8 years. At a median follow-up of 7.9 years, exercise reduced the relative risk of disease recurrence, new primary cancer, or death by 28% ( P =.02). This benefit persisted — and even strengthened — over time, with disease-free survival increasing by 6.4 and 7.1 percentage points at 5 and 8 years, respectively. Musculoskeletal adverse events were slightly higher in the exercise group compared with the health education group (18.5% vs 11.5%, respectively), but only 10% were directly attributed to the exercise. There are considerations when interpreting these results. First, there was an attrition over time for compliance and training. It would be interesting to see whether that impacted the results. Second, it's unclear whether patient pedigree or a genomic pathway may predispose to a benefit here for the exercise group. But overall, this phase 3 trial provides class 1 evidence supporting exercise as a low-cost, high-impact intervention to reduce cancer recurrence. Adjuvant Aspirin in Colon Cancer Subset That's a perfect segue into another recent study looking at the effects of adjuvant aspirin on the prevention of recurrence. The ALASCCA trial— conducted across centers in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway — assessed patients with stage I-III rectal cancer or stage II-III colon cancer. It focused on a subset of patients with an oncogenic abnormality called PIK3CA (phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase catalytic subunit alpha). PIK3CA occurs in approximately a third of colon cancers and is associated with significant chemotherapy resistance and a higher rate of disease progression. Of the included patients, 1103 (37%) had alterations in the PIK3CA pathway. Researchers randomized patients to receive either 160 mg of aspirin or placebo daily for 3 years, starting within 3 months of surgery. Among patients with PIK3CA mutations, aspirin dramatically reduced the risk for time to recurrence by nearly 50% at 3 years ( P =.044). Adverse events associated with aspirin were minimal, including one case each of gastrointestinal bleeding, hematoma, and allergic reaction. There is no evidence that higher aspirin doses provide greater prevention of colorectal cancer recurrence. The 160 mg use in the current study is fairly normal, roughly equivalent to two low-dose (81 mg) aspirin tablets. Now, it's worth noting that the use of aspirin for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease was initially recommended by the US Preventive Task Services Force in 2016. This recommendation was then recanted in 2022, when the same group reported limited net benefit to this approach. Two Proactive Actions These studies highlight two interventions — exercise and aspirin — that are low cost, accessible, and appeal to patients eager to help prevent their cancer from recurring. Exercise is broadly beneficial and can be recommended immediately. For aspirin, patients should work with their oncologist to determine their PIK3CA mutation status, as this subgroup appears to benefit the most. These findings offer patients meaningful, proactive interventions they can apply to support their recovery and reduce the risk of recurrence. Exicure Completes the Last Patient, Last Visit in Phase 2 Study of GPC-100 for Stem Cell Mobilization in Multiple Myeloma Patients Undergoing Autologous Transplant

Topline results from the study are expected in the fourth quarter of 2025. Genentech's Susvimo Maintains Vision Over Five Years With Two Refills Per Year in People With Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

In the Portal study (n = 352), people originally treated with Susvimo in Archway continued to receive Susvimo refills every six months (Susvimo cohort; n = 220), while those originally treated with monthly intravitreal (IVT) ranibizumab injections in Archway received Susvimo and then refills every six months (IVT-Susvimo cohort; n = 132). Five-year results showed consistent and sustained disease control and retinal drying in a population who entered Archway with vision at or near peak levels after receiving an average of five intravitreal injections per standard of care. In the Susvimo cohort, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 74.4 letters at baseline and 67.6 letters at 5 years. In the IVT-Susvimo cohort, BCVA was 76.3 letters at baseline and 68.6 at 5 years. Half of all patients had better than 20/40 vision at five years (Snellen visual acuity test). Average central subfield thickness (CST) remained stable, with a 1.0 (95% CI: -13.1, 11.1) µm reduction from baseline in the Susvimo cohort, and a 10.3 (95% CI: -25.7, 5.0) µm reduction in the IVT-Susvimo cohort. The cohort of people who entered the Portal study from Archway is the largest cohort of people with wet AMD to be followed prospectively and continuously for five years in a clinical study. Susvimo provides continuous delivery of a customized formulation of ranibizumab via the Port Delivery Platform, while other currently approved treatments may require eye injections as often as once per month. The Port Delivery Platform is a refillable eye implant surgically inserted into the eye during a one-time, outpatient procedure, which introduces medicine directly into the eye, addressing certain retinal conditions that can cause vision loss. About the Archway study and its open-label extension study (Portal) Archway (NCT03677934) was a randomized, multicenter, open-label Phase III study evaluating the efficacy and safety of Susvimo refilled every six months at fixed intervals, compared to monthly IVT ranibizumab 0.5 mg in 415 people living with wet AMD. Patients were randomized 3:2 to Susvimo (n = 248) or intravitreal (IVT) ranibizumab injections (n = 167). Patients enrolled in Archway were responders to prior treatment with anti-VEGF therapy. In both study arms, patients were treated with at least three anti-VEGF injections within the six months prior to their Archway screening visit, with an average of five anti-VEGF injections before randomization. The primary endpoint of the study was the change in BCVA score from baseline at the average of Week 36 and Week 40. Secondary endpoints include safety, overall change in vision (BCVA) from baseline and change from baseline in center point thickness over time. Patients who completed the study at week 96 were eligible to enter the Portal open-label extension study. In Portal, people originally treated with Susvimo in Archway continued to receive Susvimo refills every six months (Susvimo cohort), while those originally treated with monthly IVT ranibizumab injections in Archway received the Susvimo implant and then refills every six months (IVT-Susvimo cohort). About Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a condition that affects the macula, the part of the eye that provides sharp, central vision needed for activities like reading.
