Schmidt, Farrell mull options with Lions series on the line

Straits Times5 days ago
MELBOURNE - Joe Schmidt will unveil his team for the second test against the British & Irish Lions in Melbourne on Thursday, a lineup that could go a long way to defining his time as coach of Australia.
Australia must find a response to the physical dominance the tourists exerted in the opening hour of the first test defeat in Brisbane or risk becoming the first Wallabies team to fail to take a Lions series to a decider.
Rob Valetini, Australia's best test player of the last two years, has recovered from a calf injury and will take his place in the back row at the expense of rookie Nick Champion de Crespigny.
Lock Will Skelton has also recovered from a similar injury and while his inclusion would certainly beef up the pack, his limitations at the lineout might require a tweak of the back row to add another jumper.
Schmidt has had no shortage of helpful suggestions from media pundits this week with most concurring that the hard-running Angus Bell should be promoted to start at loosehead prop instead of 36-year-old James Slipper.
Dave Porecki should be available after sustaining a concussion against Fiji two weeks ago and his lineout throwing would help shore up an area of the game where the Wallabies struggled in the first test.
Behind the scrum, Tom Lynagh showed enough in his first test start to get another shot, although many would like him to do so in tandem with his Queensland Reds teammate Tate McDermott, who had a fine game off the bench in Brisbane.
There have also been calls to shift Joseph Suaalii from centre into the back three after he struggled to make an impact in Brisbane until it was too late.
That would also allow Len Ikitau to move to his more favoured outside centre spot with Hunter Paisami, another Queenland Red, slotting into the midfield outside Lynagh.
Lions coach Andy Farrell's job is a little easier after the early dominance the tourists showed in Brisbane, although he looks likely to be forced to make a change to his second row.
Irish lock Joe McCarthy limped off with a foot injury early in the second half at Lang Park and has not trained this week, leaving the door open for Ollie Chessum to move up from the bench.
The head knock suffered by Marcus Smith against the First Nations & Pasikifa XV on Tuesday could open up a spot on the bench for Farrell's playmaker son Owen, who was called up as an injury replacement for his fourth Lions tour. REUTERS

Rugby Australia want 'accountability' on late call in Lions test

SYDNEY - Rugby Australia chief executive Phil Waugh said he would seek an explanation from World Rugby on the late call by referee Andrea Piardi that ultimately decided the match and the series in the second test against the British & Irish Lions. Hugo Keenan's last-minute try gave the Lions a 29-26 win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground but the Irish fullback only scored after Jac Morgan had cleared out Carlo Tizzano in a ruck in the buildup. The Wallabies wanted a penalty for high contact but Piardi allowed the try to stand, a decision slammed by Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt in his post-match press conference as contrary to World Rugby's campaign to improve player safety. "Joe's comments at the press conference were 100% aligned with mine as a CEO and a former Wallaby," Waugh told the Sydney Morning Herald. "Our position on that particular decision is consistent to what Joe outlined in his analysis of that last breakdown. "Clearly there'll be the usual process, which is what happens after every test match, and we'll certainly be looking for a level of accountability from World Rugby over the next period of time." Waugh will not have to go far to air his views with senior World Rugby officials in Sydney this week for events looking forward to the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Saturday's victory gave the Lions an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series ahead of the third and final test at Sydney's Stadium Australia this weekend. REUTERS

SINGAPORE – Arsenal fans in Singapore will be the first to get an in-person look at their latest signing Viktor Gyokeres in a Gunners shirt, as the Swedish striker will be unveiled just before his new club's pre-season friendly against Newcastle United at the National Stadium on July 27. In a media statement, the club said that the 27-year-old 'will be in the house to watch his new teammates in tonight's fixture against Newcastle United at (the) National Stadium'. The club encouraged supporters to be in their seats 30 minutes before the 7.30pm kick-off to see 'our number 14 being unveiled to the crowd'. The match against League Cup holders Newcastle will be the Gunners' second pre-season match. On July 23, the Gunners secured a 1-0 victory over Italian giants AC Milan at the National Stadium which saw them kick off the 2025 Singapore Festival of Football series on a winning note. Arsenal announced on July 26 that they had signed Gyokeres from Sporting on a five-year deal. While financial details of the transfer were not disclosed, British media reported Arsenal agreed to pay £55 million (S$94 million) up front plus around £8 million in add-ons. 'We're absolutely delighted to welcome Viktor Gyokeres to the club,' manager Mikel Arteta said in a club statement. Gyokeres has been one of Europe's most in-demand strikers this summer and was identified as Arsenal's preferred centre-forward target. This was after he helped Sporting win the league and the Portuguese Cup last season, when he scored 54 goals in 52 games in all competitions, including a hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League. Arsenal finished second in the Premier League for a third consecutive campaign in the 2024-25 season, 10 points behind champions Liverpool with 17 fewer goals scored.

"A central figure in Forest's Premier League resurgence and a fan favourite at the City Ground, Gibbs-White has underlined his long-term commitment to the club by agreeing to fresh terms," Forest said in a statement. Forest finished seventh in the Premier League last season, earning a place in the UEFA Conference League's playoff round. REUTERS
