
Locals fell prey to fraud worth thousands of rands
According to the police, the scams varying from digital theft to in-person deception, have robbed individuals of their hard-earned money, proving that fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their tactics.
'To protect yourself from fraud and cyber threats, never respond to emails or phone messages claiming to be from your bank that request personal details, as legitimate banks will never ask for this information via email. Never share your online ID, password, or PIN with anyone, and avoid writing them down or saving them on your desktop. Always ensure you log off or sign out after completing an internet banking session, and never leave your computer unattended while logged in. Avoid doing online banking in public areas or on computers accessible to strangers. Regularly change your PIN and passwords, set reasonable transaction limits on your accounts, and only provide credit card details to trustworthy companies. Lastly, if an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is – always remain cautious and vigilant when dealing with financial transactions,' said Captain Eddie Hall, spokesperson of SAPS Witbank as he warns the public against cases like this.
For one unsuspecting victim in Watermeyer street on May 23, a simple phone notification turned into a nightmare.
According to police a man was woken up by the sound of his phone beeping, and checked his account only to find that R18 700 had been withdrawn via a PayShap transaction—an app he never authorised for such use. The realisation was sudden as the reality of cyber fraud hit home.
On May 22, there were a few cases reported. In Strydom Street a man encountered three individuals – two women and one man – who claimed to be employees of a national fuel company.
They assured him they were assisting customers with their points cards for petrol purchases. Trusting them, he allowed them to take his picture and handed over his ID details. What followed was financial devastation – R81 000 was withdrawn from his bank account across multiple locations.
In another incident in Uthingo Park, Tasbet Park, a woman found herself unknowingly tricked by a scam that exploited trust and familiarity.
According to police she received a message on WhatsApp, supposedly from her pastor, requesting an urgent money transfer due to a network issue.
Without questioning the legitimacy of the request, she transferred R3 000 to the provided account number, only to later receive confirmation that her pastor's number had been hacked.
'I never suspected it was a scam – I genuinely believed I was helping my pastor. My trust in him made me certain that his request was genuine, and I acted with a kind heart, simply wanting to support someone in need. It never crossed my mind that I could be deceived,' she said.
In another incident, a resident in Bankenveld Estate fall prey to an attack which came in the form of unexpected online money transactions.
On May 14, he noticed unusual deductions from his Absa account. Upon contacting the bank's fraud helpline, he was informed that his account had been cloned, resulting in a staggering loss of R39 524.64.

Police captain commits suicide after killing girlfriend and her brother
Gauteng police have opened an inquest docket in Protea after a police captain committed suicide after he allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend and her brother. The incident happened in Protea, Soweto, on Saturday night, 26 July. South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Gauteng, colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said it is alleged that the group was at home celebrating the birthday of the captain's girlfriend, who is also a police officer. 'The captain reportedly called the girlfriend to the side, and that is when people saw him draw a firearm, and shoot her and her brother dead while three other civilians sustained injuries. He then turned the gun on himself,' Nevhuhulwi explained. Two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder and an inquest docket were opened at Protea police station for further investigation. Meanwhile Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni expressed his sadness at this incident and sent his heartfelt condolences to the affected families. 'We give our members these tools to protect themselves against criminals, so it is very disheartening to see the very same tools being used to kill their loved ones. I urge our members to make use of employee health and wellness facilities to assist them to deal with any problems they may be facing, whether work or personal, EHW is always there', Mthombeni said. Recently, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) called on the SAPS to strengthen its mental health and wellness support programmes for officers, following a tragic incident involving one of its own. A female police constable, Ntombethemba Mgidi, appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate's Court on Monday, 22 July, after being arrested in connection with the fatal shootings of two fellow officers in the Mbayimbayi area near Murchison on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast last week. Both victims later died from their injuries at Murchison Hospital. 'This act of violence highlights the urgent need for SAPS to intensify internal wellness and psychological support programmes that help members manage relational and emotional pressures,' said POPCRU spokesperson Richard Mamabolo. #Letter: Pickpocketed and robbed of R4 000
Sheffield resident Guy Daines writes: On Sunday, July 13, at about 11.30am, I went to the Capitec branch ATM at Ballito Lifestyle Centre with my son's card. While in the queue to take a balance and draw cash, I was pushed from the front and back and before I knew it, the card was missing. It was a very professional hit job. I went to a security guard for help but he looked on helplessly. Five minutes later, R4 000 was taken from the account via an ATM at the Shell garage. On Monday, I went into the bank and reported the incident after cancelling the card on Sunday. The bank said I must report it to police and centre management and I acted accordingly, returning to the bank after I received a police case number. The bank also said they have to wait for the crime division of Saps to contact them. How long will that take? The banks are the ones that have moved their queues from inside their banking halls to outside. In the interim, Marc from Lifestyle Centre contacted me and said they will call for CCTV footage. As of Friday, July 18, I am still waiting. So I am left R4 000 short at this time of the month, with no camera evidence and no timeframe – unlikely to get my money back. Pissed off to say the least. Capitec Ballito Lifestyle Centre declined to respond. Lifestyle Centre management responds: We regret that Mr Daines has experienced the reported theft of his son's bank card. The operation forms part of an escalating investigation into irregular tenders allegedly worth a staggering R18 billion. In a letter released on Saturday, July 26, 2025, following the raid, Prasa stated that it is 'fully cooperating' with the Hawks after the seizure of laptops, cell phones, and critical documentation from senior executives' offices. The agency emphasised its commitment to transparency, accountability, and its core mission of providing safe, reliable, and efficient rail services to the public. The Hawks obtained a search warrant to collect various information and electronic devices amid increasing allegations of corruption and mismanagement at the agency. However, authorities have been tight-lipped about the specifics, aiming to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation. Prasa welcomed the Hawks' involvement and assured the public that it has nothing to hide and remains committed to supporting all legitimate investigative processes.
