Smith hits 80-ball century as England counterattacks to 249-5 against India in 2nd test
England trailed by 338 runs in response to India's 587 all out but Brook (91) and Smith (102) were set on a good pitch at Edgbaston, with their partnership up to 165.
Behind 1-0 in the five-match series, India looked like steamrolling England after reducing the home team to 84-5 thanks to Siraj's double on the second over of the day.
The pacer dismissed England's best batter — Root (22) — by enticing a nick down the leg side, with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant taking a diving catch. Stokes arrived in the middle but was soon slowly walking back to the dressing room after a steeply rising and seaming delivery from Siraj came off the shoulder of the England captain's bat and flashed to Pant.
England was rocked but Smith played as if there was no pressure, smashing three sixes as well as 14 fours — the last of which came in the final over before lunch and brought up his second test century.
It came off just 80 balls, making it the third fastest by an English player.
England was going at 6.37 runs an over and was racing toward an initial target of 388 — the score needed to avoid the follow-on.
Brook, who resumed with Root with England 77-3, was more circumspect but had still hit 11 fours and a six in a 127-ball knock.
England won the first test at Headingley.

Associated Press GONDOMAR, Portugal (AP) — Players from Liverpool and Portugal's national team joined family and friends for the funeral of their teammate Diogo Jota and his brother on Saturday, two days after the siblings died in a car crash in Spain. Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk arrived carrying a red floral arrangement in the shape of a soccer shirt with Jota's No. 20 in white. Liverpool teammate Andrew Robertson carried a similar arrangement with the No. 30, the number worn by Jota's brother, André Silva, who played for Portuguese club Penafiel. Coach Arne Slot was part of the Liverpool contingent. Portugal international Rúben Neves served as a pallbearer for Jota a day after playing for at the Club World Cup in the United States. He and Jota were teammates at Wolverhampton earlier in their careers. Neves and Joao Cancelo attended the funeral after playing in Orlando on Friday, when their Al Hilal was eliminated by Fluminense. Both players had wept when a minute of silence was held before the quarterfinal match. The service was held at Igreja Matriz church in the Portuguese town of Gondomar, where Jota had a home. Church bells pealed at 10:00 a.m. local time as the funeral started. Pallbearers carried the caskets of both brothers from a chapel next door and into the church. Relatives and hundreds of friends and acquaintances, including players of the local Gondomar FC where Jota started playing at age 9, then followed. Brothers killed in car crash The brothers were reportedly heading to catch a boat from northern Spain to go to England where Jota was to rejoin with Liverpool after a summer break. Spanish police are investigating the cause of the crash, which did not involve another vehicle, they said. They said they believe it could have been caused by a blown tire. Their bodies were repatriated to Portugal after being identified by the family. A wake was held for them on Friday. Jota's death occurred two weeks after he married long-time partner Rute Cardoso while on vacation from a long season where he helped Liverpool win the Premier League. The couple had three children, the youngest born last year. Germany awaits news about captain Giulia Gwinn's latest knee injury at Euro 2025
ST. GALLEN, Switzerland (AP) — Germany was awaiting news Saturday on the severity of captain Giulia Gwinn's latest knee injury at the Women's European Championship. The 26-year-old Gwinn injured her knee while a making a likely goal-saving tacking on Poland captain Ewa Pajor during Germany's 2-0 win on Friday. She had to be supported off the field in tears after getting hugs from teammates. Gwinn, who previously had two cruciate ligament injuries, was to have an MRI in Zurich on Saturday to determine the extent of the injury. Gwinn missed the 2023 World Cup while she recovered from the second cruciate injury. 'We all know Giulia's history. We're all, all of us, keeping our fingers crossed that it's nothing so serious,' Germany vice-captain Janina Minge said. 'We have to stand together as a team, to stand with her and hope for the best.' Jule Brand, who scored one goal and set up the other on Friday, said Gwinn's injury was a 'shock for us all. When Giuli is down then it's never good because she always gets straight back up again.' Gwinn tore the ACL in her right knee in a European qualifier against Ireland in September 2020, then suffered the same injury again in her left knee while training with Germany in October 2022. ACL injuries can vary in severity but can mean as much as a year off if surgery is required. Kyle Walker ends 8-year spell with Man City by moving to Burnley
BURNLEY, England (AP) — England right back Kyle Walker ended his eight-year stint at Manchester City by moving to Burnley on Saturday in a deal reportedly worth 5 million pounds ($6.8 million). The 35-year-old Walker joins an American-owned team that has just been promoted to the Premier League and is coached by Scott Parker, his former Tottenham and England teammate. Walker has been a great at City, winning six league titles and the Champions League since his 2017 move from Spurs, but lost his place in the team last season and went on loan to AC Milan. He kept his place in the England squad, though, playing in the team's last game — a 3-1 loss to Senegal last month — to move onto 96 caps. 'When I spoke to Scott and heard about his plans for next season, it was an opportunity I jumped at,' said Walker, who has signed a two-year deal.
