Adolescence to The Virtues: the most heartbreaking TV of all time

The Guardian20-03-2025
Adolescence, as the world seems to agree, is a perfect piece of television. However, even perfection has its problems. Adolescence is the sort of show that needs some breathing space afterwards; it's so comprehensively shattering, and will leave you in such a state of emotional despondency, that you can't simply hop straight into the next show. I tried – after episode four, I had to watch a reality show for work – and it was horrible. It was like stumbling from a funeral straight into a circus.
Perhaps what we need here is an off-ramp. A bunch of shows that, while they might leave you in pieces, may not pack quite such a devastating punch as Adolescence. Here's a selection of the most heartbreaking television.
If Adolescence wanted to make me do anything – aside from lock my sons in a sensory deprivation chamber until they reach adulthood – it was to watch 2019's The Virtues. Like Adolescence, it stars Stephen Graham and was co-written by Jack Thorne, and like Adolescence it's so raw that it sometimes feels impolite to even watch it. Directed by Shane Meadows, it's the story of a father who suffers a comprehensive alcoholic breakdown when his wife and son move to Australia without him. There's repression. There's childhood trauma. There is an ending that will leave you numb for weeks. If you're chasing the hit of Adolescence, this is the place to start.
Another collaboration between Graham, Thorne and Meadows, these are a clutch of miniseries, made between 2010 and 2015, that develop the story from Meadows's 2006 film This Is England. All three shows deploy a gut-wrenching intensity that can be hard to bear. There's rape and violence, murder, death and poverty – and some of the narrative is set at Christmas, just to compound the misery. Graham's arc, as a character who struggles to atone for his part in a violent racist attack years earlier, is particularly harrowing. However, there's also a sense of hope in the show, however dim it might be at times, that just about manages to lift you out of the dirt.
Written during a depression after the death of his father, Damon Lindelof's The Leftovers has the potential to be one of the bleakest programmes ever. An unexplained event makes 2% of the world's population vanish, leaving the remaining 98% to battle through their grief while a nihilistic religious cult forces everyone to confront their loss. This might be a good next step from Adolescence, because although it starts dark – the pilot episode contains scenes of dog murder – it soon finds absurdity and hope in its miserable premise.
The fear of Adolescence is that what happens to its family could happen to anybody. Meanwhile, the Chornobyl explosion was a thing that did happen to many people, and the truth of the disaster was far worse than was reported for decades. There's an innate sadness to the show, of course – how could there not be? – but in its depiction of radiation poisoning and death, it also makes a fitting lurch into horror. Historically accurate bleakness.
This show deserves to go down as Russell T Davies's masterpiece. Both the BBC and ITV passed on It's a Sin before Channel 4 picked it up, perhaps fearing that a show about the Aids epidemic of the 1980s would be too harrowing for mainstream audiences. This isn't quite the case – there are moments of real joy here – but it's a hard thing to watch as characters die off, knowing that this all really happened. Like Chernobyl, the show burns with an anger that this was ever allowed to happen. But there's also a deep sense of humanity in every frame. Davies has never written more from the heart, and it shows.
This Is Us is compelling: it feels as if it was precision-designed by a team of expert crafters to make as many people cry as possible. It's about a family who experience the familiar peaks and troughs of love, birth, death and heartache, but with everything ramped up to an absurd degree. You find yourself sobbing even though you're being manipulated. It is also aggressively sentimental in a way that Adolescence isn't, which might be a comfort.

Myleene Klass opens up on agony of catching ex ‘cheating' with celeb – & disgraced star who begged for ‘sex contract'

SHE has an army of famous pals and is often seen rubbing shoulders with stars at showbiz parties. But despite her seemingly perfect life, Myleene Klass has told how her first husband, Graham Quinn, cheated on her with another celeb — and claimed vile Harvey Weinstein offered to make her a movie star in exchange for sex. 7 7 7 In a bombshell interview yesterday, the singer-turned-broadcaster claimed she walked in on the pair unzipping each other's clothes at her OWN birthday party. Myleene — who wouldn't divulge the woman's name but said she still works with a 'family brand' — revealed: 'I walked in on him with a famous person on my birthday on a balcony. "It was in my house, it was my party. They weren't having sex, but they were unzipping each other. '[They said] 'It's not what you think', but it is what I think. It's the first thing they both said. Made peace 'I kicked everybody out of the party including his mum and dad. They went back to Ireland. 'And his dad said, 'He doesn't get it from me'. I was like, 'OK'. I just remember that being quite a weird thing to say.' Myleene admitted she struggled to see the woman continuing as normal after the run-in, explaining: 'I've made peace with that situation now. 'But for a long time, it was very difficult to see their life . . . Not that I would wish that on a family. I don't know, I feel conflicted. 'But my life literally just broke apart very, very publicly. And their life, they've managed to continue building a family brand on it and it felt so difficult for a long time. This is the person I caught him with.' Former Hear'Say singer Myleene had met Graham when he was working as a security guard for the band and, despite the incident, went on to marry him. They had two children, Ava and Hero, during their 12-year relationship, but were granted a divorce in 2013. Recalling their 2011 wedding in Norwich, which was attended by just 16 people, Myleene said: 'It was the most miserable . . . No one forgot this wedding because I literally cried the entire reception.' It was made worse by the fact the couple butted heads over her request for him to sign a pre-nuptial agreement. Chatting to Paul C. Brunson on the We Need To Talk podcast, she said: 'So we'd had the biggest row, myself and my ex, because I'd asked him why he wouldn't sign the prenup. I believe every woman who came forward because I sat there and I was utterly devastated because I didn't know if I was going to get out. Myleene Klass 'On the night of our wedding I asked again. I just felt something was wrong and he didn't want a big wedding. My best mate wasn't even at my wedding. They weren't allowed to come, otherwise he wouldn't go through with it.' Months later, the marriage was over. Mylene alleges Graham squirrelled money away and had secretly bought a house to escape to. She explained: 'One pop star rang me up and she was like, 'I think I've got your money, it's in my safe'. He'd hidden the money because he was way down the line. "They say you don't leave when you leave, you've gone already. He'd actually got a house. He had a secret house that he'd bought already. You don't just buy a house like that. 'On the day he decided it was over, he pushed a little Post-It note across the table with the figure he wanted. 'I was just like, 'How have you figured this out?'.' But she added: 'All I will say to you is I've raised my children single-handedly, financially, as a sole parent for 12 years.' 7 It was not the first time Myleene had faced secret anguish away from the spotlight. She also confirmed that convicted sex offender Harvey Weinstein once offered her a 'sex contract' to make her a Hollywood star. The Sun told in 2017 how he had propositioned her during a meeting at Cannes Film Festival in 2010. Addressing it for the first time, Myleene admitted she felt 'utterly devastated' when he made the sick offer, as she wasn't sure she would be able to escape him. She had interviewed him for CNN on the , and he suggested they had a meeting over lunch — then used the opportunity to try to take advantage of her. Asked about the 'sex contract', she said: 'Well, it's, 'You have sex with me and I'll make you famous'. I said, 'I'm already famous in the areas I want to be'. '[He said] 'Well, you can be in this movie like X, Y, Z', and started naming all these women. And then I said, 'I don't want to be in the movies'. 'I believe every woman who came forward because I sat there and I was utterly devastated because I didn't know if I was going to get out.' I felt like I was standing on the shoulders of giants. I had a message to deliver and I had to deliver the voices that never got heard. Myleene Klass On how she escaped the situation, Myleene continued: 'I said we'd be in touch and made it very business-like, I suppose. I just got out. Lunch finished and I got out. Any woman will tell you it's fight or flight. 'Any woman who's been in that position where somebody's being predatory, they don't have to come with a weapon. 'We feel it in our gut, we know immediately when we're in danger.' Myleene was already a star in her own right, having been a runner up on I'm A Celebrity . . . Get Me Out of Here! in 2006, when she famously wore a white bikini in the jungle shower. Speaking about the impact the piece of swimwear had on her life, Myleene — who said she sells one every 45 seconds through her business — revealed she originally packed a stripy bikini for the show. But she was rushed out by bosses to buy an alternative just before heading into the jungle, as they said the design would 'strobe' and look weird on camera. She was urged tp pick 'the plainest bikini you can find' instead. The Classic FM DJ explained: 'I went into the shop and said, 'I need the plainest bikini', and the woman in the shop went, 'Here's a white bikini'. I owe that girl everything.' The show was a reinvention for Myleene as it landed her a long-running modelling deal with Marks & Spencer and meant she was back in business, four years after Hear'Say crashed and burned. 7 7 Pure And Simple became the fastest-selling debut single of all time in the UK, shifting 550,000 copies in a week following their victory on the ITV talent show Popstars in 2001. But 18 months later, the band called it a day when they were deserted by their team and public interest nosedived. On how the group, which also featurd Kym Marsh, Suzanne Shaw, Noel Sullivan and Danny Foster, ended, Myleene said: 'It fizzled. It was left to die. And I turned the lights out. 'It was heartbreaking because at the time I didn't want it to end. We took a vote . . . and the vote was yes. 'I remember walking into a meeting where one guy said, 'We've got 250,000 Easter eggs with your faces on them, what are we going to do?'. And I was like, 'I don't know!'. It was almost comical.' But with the 25th anniversary of their heyday fast approaching, she isn't ruling out a return, despite previously saying no to the offer of a tour for their 20th anniversary. She teased: 'I keep on saying, 'Never say never', because you never know now. If I say no, then this will be played out across the arena.' As well as her work in music, TV and radio, Myleene has become a fervent campaigner raising awareness of miscarriages, helping to change government policy to support women who lose a baby while pregnant. Earlier this month, she received an MBE for her work on women's health and has now revealed she spoke to King Charles about it. Asked about her most memorable conversation, she said: 'The one most recently is the one with the King for miscarriage, because I think there's so many people who search for the glory and this one was bigger than me. 'I felt like I was standing on the shoulders of giants. I had a message to deliver and I had to deliver the voices that never got heard. 'That's a very, very powerful message that needs to be heard and hasn't been heard once yet in front of a living monarch. That's like dominos, it's kick-started something.'
