Soap icon devastated over mum's cancer death - 'I'll never get over it'
Ten years ago, Davinia Taylor felt old before her time. 'Bearing in mind I hadn't drunk for five years, I felt hungover, sluggish, I had no self-esteem and no get-up-and-go,' she says. 'Life was like walking through quicksand.'
So the Hollyoaks actress changed her diet and lifestyle, dramatically transforming her physical and mental wellbeing, which, in turn, sparked a passion for health and wellness that inspired her 2021 book It's Not A Diet and Hack Your Hormones in 2023.
And the results are startling. Davinia, now 47, has discovered – thanks to a GlycanAge blood test that identifies chronic inflammation – that she has a biological age of 20. 'I feel better than I ever did in my teens, twenties or thirties,' she says. 'Internally, you could be ageing ferociously and you don't even know it.'
In fact, she reports that the average woman in England and Wales spends 23% of her life in poor health. That's the statistic that prompted her shift of focus towards the idea of 'healthspan' – the number of years we spend in good health – rather than just lifespan.
'Research shows only 25% of differences in lifespan is down to genetics. The rest is down to what we do,' she says.
Already a wellness entrepreneur with her own supplements brand, WillPowders, Davinia has now done a deep dive into the world of health longevity and the result is Futureproof: Build Resilience, Feel Younger, Live Longer, which distils extensive in-depth research into a game-changing, accessible wellbeing bible that she hopes can help women everywhere.
Davinia may seem like an unlikely health guru. A former party girl who was part of the 90s Primrose Hill set, she socialised with Kate Moss and Sadie Frost, and married first husband Dave Gardner, David Beckham's best friend.
Life looks very different today. Happily wed to builder Matthew Leyden, she has four sons aged nine to 17. Davinia has been sober for 16 years and practises what she preaches, following the science to stay fit, healthy and active for as long as she possibly can.
And it's clearly working – she glows with health and has an enviable line-free complexion that is testament to her lifestyle. But while many are motivated by vanity, Davinia is driven by something more profound – her mother's death from cancer at the age of 60.
'That was 12 years ago and it's still too much for me to deal with,' she says. 'I'll never get over it. And I'm coming up to my 50th. If I think about my boys going through losing me, not having a grandmother for their children and everything I'd miss out on... suddenly mortality is very much on my radar.'
One of Davinia's key discoveries was that her supposedly 'healthy' low-fat diet was having a disastrous impact on her wellbeing. 'After my mum passed away, I didn't realise that I was eating unhealthily. I was eating five or six portions of wholegrains a day, a low-fat diet and not much meat.'
But she felt hopelessly lethargic. 'If I was going to the supermarket, I'd always park in the mother-and-baby space. And if there wasn't a space, I'd drive home.'
Then she learned that her brain was insulin resistant, due to over-exposure to sugar. She addressed this by taking a tablespoon of MCT oil (a type of easily digested fat), which boosted her brain energy and reduced hunger pangs.
She also changed what she eats. 'My diet is very meat heavy now. Meat and two veg makes sense, that's what we evolved on. I have a super-high calorie intake because I've got such a high-fat diet. But it's not about calories, it's about the nutrition you're getting that will stop you snacking.'
Her ideal snack, though, isn't 'a handful of nuts and a corner of dark chocolate', she was a crisps and mint Aero girl, so making these changes didn't come naturally.
She explains, 'We've had our palates hijacked by the five big companies that make 95% of our snacks – but you can hijack them back. I don't get cravings any more, unless I'm due on my period or something stressful has happened – even then, I'll crave a big sandwich, not a mint Aero.'
And she's determined to help others do the same. 'Growing numbers of people are dying of chronic diseases,' she says. 'We're living longer, but we're living worse.'
Futureproof: Build Resilience, Feel Younger, Live Longer by Davinia Taylor (Orion Spring), £16.99, is out now
How to stay forever young
Davinia Taylor's simple tips for slowing down ageing, boosting energy and feeling great:
EAT FOR VITALITY
Most age-related diseases are linked to chronic inflammation, and processed food is a key cause – cut it out. Reduce your intake of sugary foods.
Try intermittent fasting – eating all your meals between 11am and 7pm – as it repairs and regenerates cells.
Plan meals around protein. It curbs cravings by steadying blood sugar and supports muscle growth.
GET STRONGER
People who move more live longer. Just 90 minutes each week can reduce your risk of dying from all causes by 14%.
I run daily for 20 minutes – not to lose weight, but to help my brain. ○ Join a gym and build muscle.
CALM DOWN
Alcohol might feel like instant relief, but you won't get deep sleep and your anxiety will fly up the next day.
Ditch the 'treat yourself' mentality (sugar is linked to anxiety) and get outside.
Enjoy sunlight, exercise and connection.

Hollyoaks star tried to ‘hide' health condition on set due to ‘embarrassment'
Hollyoaks actor David Tag opened up about his health condition after it left him struggling with confidence. Hollyoaks star David Tag has revealed a health condition he kept hidden while on set. The actor, 40, played Sylver McQueen on the Channel 4 soap between June 2018 and January 2022. However, behind-the-scenes he was in pain and suffering from varicose veins. Appearing on Friday's This Morning with Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary, David revealed a small vein began to appear more than ten years ago. "Like a lot of lads do, you just ignore it and hope it goes away, but it just got progressively worse and worse," he shared. He went on: "When it got hot or when it got cold it was painful, and to touch it was quite sensitive." The actor revealed he was particularly impacted when trying to play with his kids and while training in the gym. Recalling being on set, David said: "A lot of the times I would take my clothes off for certain scenes, and I would try and hide it." "I wanted to do the scenes so I would just position myself in a certain way so they couldn't see it," he continued, saying he was "a little bit embarrassed of it". David sought treatment after realising it 'wouldn't go away', and as the size of the vein increased, he realised: 'This is getting out of hand, I need to get it sorted.' The star underwent a treatment involving laser on both his legs, which left him wearing stocking-like clothes and unable to train for a week. 'Now, you wouldn't even be able to tell it was there,' he said, revealing his confidence has since increased. This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV1. Hollyoaks confirms major Dillon twist as Misbah and Donny are left reeling
This is the moment in Hollyoaks next week that Dillon Ray (Nathaniel Dass) makes an outburst, leaving his loved ones in complete and utter shock. The teen, as viewers know, is struggling with addiction in the wake of his exploitation ordeal at the hands of Rex Gallagher (Jonny Labey) and Grace Black (Tamara Wall). Following a relapse earlier this week, he cheated on boyfriend Lucas Hay (Oscar Curtis) and subsequently confided in Ste (Kieron Richardson) that he was the one responsible for DI Banks (Drew Cain) death. DI Banks, as fans will recall, was the exploitation operation's leader, who attempted to sell Dillon, Vicky Grant (Anya Lawrence) and Frankie Osborne (Isabelle Smith) to the highest bidder in a twisted auction. Desperate to escape their captors, Dillon, Frankie and Vicky grabbed a gun each and shot at the corrupt officer, who was subsequently declared dead. The trio was unaware of which bullet claimed Banks' life until earlier this week when Dillon – determined to get answers – acquired the ballistics report from an unsuspecting Donny Clark (Louis Emerick). To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Finding out that it was his gun that shot the villain proved hard to get his head around. Next week, Vicky panics when she learns that Donny has received another copy of the ballistics report. Ste, meanwhile, gets a voicemail from Dillon, who – believing he's caused enough pain – reveals that he's going to confess to the shooting. Vicky urges Dillon to keep quiet about what he's uncovered, reassuring him that they're all on in this together. Worried for him, she makes various attempts to stop Dillon from coming clean but – despite her best efforts – he confronts Misbah Maalik (Harvey Virdi) and Donny Clark (Louis Emerick), making quite an outburst. Pictures shared with Metro reveal the dramatic scene. But the question is: has Dillon admitted to being the one who shot Banks? More Trending Is the truth out? And is Dillon facing jail? Laura Anderson reveals marriage and baby plans with Scots boyfriend Clark Robertson
Laura Anderson and Clark Robertson only went public with their relationship in October last year but they have already discussed their future together Laura Anderson rose to fame as a contestant on Love Island seven years ago and since then the Scottish influencer's love life has played out in the public eye. Making it all the way to the final with her villa lover Paul Knops, the pair split just a few months after leaving the ITV show and Laura went on to date Love Island 2015 winner Max Morley. However, it was not meant to be with the pair and things in Laura's life changed forever when she started dating Hollyoaks actor Gary Lucy after meeting him on Celebs Go Dating. Laura fell pregnant just five months into their relationship and the pair shocked fans when they announced their split, shortly after announcing they were expecting their first child together. The 36-year-old now shares her one-year-old daughter Bonnie with Gary Lucy, although she has taken several public digs at him after claiming she is a "single parent". One of which came on Father's Day last month when she took to her Instagram Stories to write: "Cheers to the single mums who feel sh*t for their kids on Father's Day." However, the Scots star has now moved on and is back in love with her new man - Dundee FC player Clark Robertson. Laura and Clark went public last October and the former Capital Radio host appears to be happier than ever with her new beau, so much so that marriage and kids may even be on the cards. Clark, has his own two kids, eight-year-old son Cole and a five-year-old daughter named Mimi, who he shares with his ex fiancé Karla Ray. Laura has now opened up about the possibility of having more children with the Aberdeen born star and Clark's relationship with Bonnie. Speaking to Closer, Laura said: "Well, it pulls at the ovaries a little bit! But we're not ready to go there just yet. "I didn't meet his kids until we'd been together for about nine months but he met Bonnie quite quickly because she was a baby she didn't know what was going on and she was with me all the time so we couldn't really not. "We waited a little while for me to meet his kids because they're a bit older. It's so nice seeing him with his kids, it makes a man more attractive when you see their caring side. He's a really good dad." While the pair seemed to have planned to have more kids in the future, it doesn't seem this will be happening any time soon. Laura said: "We both said that we wanted to meet somebody who already had kids. When you put your children first you hope that the next person you meet understands that. "We both said on the first date that we wanted more children but not right now. "Bonnie's a lot to handle and we've just started our new life together, so we'll give it a little bit of time before we jump into that – with a ring first!" Hinting that she wants to tie the knot before becoming a mum again, Laura added: "I just want what everybody wants, it would be nice to be married."
