Peta calls for Skegness mascot Jolly Fisherman to be replaced
The original Jolly Fisherman poster, which features the slogan "Skegness is so bracing" was commissioned by the Great Northern Railway to encourage visitors to take the train on their seaside breaks to Skegness.It was commissioned in 1908 for 12 guineas and has become synonymous with the Lincolnshire resort.Jolly is also represented by a statue in the town.Ms White said the best thing would be for the statue to be replaced with a "happy fish" to remind people that fish have a "desire to live and can feel pain and love and joy just as any other animal".She said: "We have sent a letter to the mayor offering to contribute to the cost of a new statue that would replace the so-called Jolly Fisherman."We can all be kind to fish and other animals by simply eating vegan foods and that's really what this statue would represent."
In response, Kirk said the Jolly Fisherman was loved throughout the world and was an integral part of Skegness."Anyone who has been around for a while will realise that around once every ten years or so, when they are desperate to raise their profile they [Peta] pick on the poor Jolly Fisherman."It's publicity for them," he added.Last week, an appeal was made to find people to don a Jolly costume to go out and about in the resort to meet holidaymakers.Mr Kirk said they now had several potential candidates for the role.Jolly has previously been in the news when he was redrawn by New European with the slogan Skegness is so Brexit.The mascot also appeared on the cover of Bill Bryson's book The Road to Little Dribbling.

Oasis ‘shocked and saddened' after fan dies in fall at Wembley concert
Oasis have said they are 'shocked and saddened' after a man fell to his death at Wembley Stadium during the band's Saturday concert. The man was understood to be sitting in the upper tier of the 90,000-seat stadium – the highest stands of which are 50 metres above the ground – as the Gallagher brothers performed as part of their reunion tour. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan police said that at about 10.19pm on Saturday, officers on duty at Wembley for the Oasis concert responded to reports that a person had been injured. 'A man – aged in his 40s – was found with injuries consistent with a fall. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene,' the spokesperson said. 'The stadium was busy, and we believe it is likely a number of people witnessed the incident, or may knowingly or unknowingly have caught it on mobile phone video footage.' The Met has asked that if anyone has any information that could help to confirm what happened, they should contact the force. In a statement, Oasis said: 'We are shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death of a fan at the show last night. Oasis would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved.' One fan, who was sitting in a lower tier, said on social media that she had witnessed paramedics trying to revive the man. 'I was directly underneath in section 211. At first glance I thought it was a coat falling from the above tier but then I looked and saw the bloke on the concrete. It was horrific to see,' she wrote. A Wembley Stadium spokesperson said: 'Last night, Wembley Stadium medics, the London ambulance service and the police attended to a concertgoer who was found with injuries consistent with a fall. 'Despite their efforts, the fan very sadly died. Our thoughts go out to his family, who have been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers.' The venue said Sunday night's Oasis concert would go ahead as planned. The Oasis reunion tour, with Liam and Noel Gallagher at the band's helm once again for the first time in 16 years, includes seven shows at Wembley in London, as well as five in the Gallaghers' home town of Manchester. They will then tour the US, Mexico, Japan, South Korea and Australia, before ending in South America in November.

West Ham fans fume as club confirm signing of their former bogeyman who mocked their Conference League triumph
West Ham announced a new singing on Saturday and it hasn't gone down well with some sections of their fanbase. The club announced that striker Callum Wilson has agreed a one-year deal after his contract at Newcastle expired. The 33-year-old endured an injury-ridden campaign at Newcastle last season, starting just two Premier League games and scoring one goal in all competitions. But he has been more prolific in the past with 49 goals in 130 games for the Magpies and 67 in 187 appearances for Bournemouth prior to that. He's scored 12 goals in 16 games against the Hammers, more than he has against any other club, earning a reputation as somewhat of a bogeyman. That isn't the main issue supporters have, however, with Wilson having made some comments that have angered them in the past. He once scored a goal against them with his hand and went on to describe it as a 'tough of magic.' Wilson also compared West Ham's Europa Conference League win to winning a trophy on FIFA. Responding to the announcement of the signing, one fan wrote: 'delighted to welcome Wilson - a man who mocked our European trophy, said Michail Antonio would never play CL, and made a career out of scoring against us. Truly the West Ham way. Another said: You know Callum that most Hammers were against you signing, for a number of reasons, including the times when you have dissed the club over the years.
