SUHAKAM Calls For ASEAN Legal Framework To Tackle Gender Discrimination In Business
By Muhammad Fawwaz Thaqif Nor Afandi KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) -- ASEAN must work towards a cohesive and enforceable legal framework to eliminate gender-based discrimination in the business sector, said Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) Vice-Chairperson Tengku Mohamed Fauzi Tengku Abdul Hamid on Monday. He said that the region still lacks binding legislation and institutional accountability to effectively address gender-related harms in business environments. bootstrap slideshow 'Our legal frameworks remain fragmented. Without enforceable laws, gender equality continues to be more aspirational than operational,' he said at the Regional Workshop on Gender Lens Perspective on Business and Human Rights in ASEAN, here. Tengku Mohamed Fauzi said that women in the region continue to face unregulated discrimination in recruitment, contract negotiations, and promotions, particularly in the private sector and without binding legislation and institutional accountability, gender equality remains aspirational and operational. He added that the ASEAN Consensus on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers, endorsed by all ASEAN member states, could serve as a foundation to address gender-specific issues, especially concerning migrant women in business contexts. Meanwhile, Malaysia's Representative to the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), Edmund Bon Tai Soon, urged ASEAN to move beyond fragmented national efforts and adopt a shared regional framework that holds both governments and businesses accountable to clear and consistent gender rights standards. 'Having a legal framework is very crucial. We are a diverse region, but we must develop a framework, especially now that Malaysia has led the adoption of the new ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which commits to uplifting and protecting the rights of women and children,' he said. Bon also emphasised that beyond policies and laws, genuine progress requires strong political will and commitment from ASEAN leaders.

Sabah assemblymen graft: Businessman wants ex-MACC head Latheefa Koya on his team
KOTA KINABALU: Businessman Datuk Albert Tei, who was charged with graft today, says he plans to engage former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Latheefa Koya as counsel for his defence. Tei, 37, from Selangor, was charged with two counts of giving bribes to two Sabah assemblymen and pleaded not guilty. ( Tei's counsel, Edward Paul, said this was an unusual case where the complainant is also charged alongside the receivers. "It's quite unusual, but we are prepared for it, and he's very adamant about clearing his name on both charges," he told reporters after the court proceedings. He said they will be filing an ad-hoc admission application for Latheefa to join Tei's legal team. However, he did not disclose the exact date when the application would be filed, only saying that it would be "soon". Batholomew Jingulam and Jul Hamri Jumhani also represented Tei. Latheefa, who is also the adviser of the rights group Lawyers for Liberty (LFL), is a peninsular-based lawyer who has been consulting Tei regarding the Op Adun cases. Applications for the ad-hoc admission of counsel from outside Sabah are made pursuant to Section 10 of the Advocates Ordinance. Op Adun is the investigation into the involvement of Sabah assemblymen in the issuance of mining licences.

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the ECERDC has also successfully created more than 2,800 jobs to date. 'At the same time, the amount of committed investments has reached RM10.4 billion, surpassing the RM10 billion target set for 2025,' he said in a post on his official Facebook page today. Earlier on, Anwar attended a meeting with the ECERDC to review the latest progress on key performance indicators for the economic corridor, and to discuss the development framework for East Coast Economic Region (ECER) under the upcoming 13th Malaysia Plan, which is currently being formulated by the government. The Prime Minister said the government's strategic plans, especially through the ECER Development Plan, among others, will see eight strategic and high-impact projects scheduled for completion this year. 'I emphasised the importance of prioritising the country's long-term interests in attracting investors, including the importance of ensuring a percentage of technology and skills transfer elements in every approved investment. 'The ECERDC needs to maintain this momentum through an efficient and proactive facilitation process which will strengthen the East Coast Region as a competitive investment destination both nationally and internationally,' he added. In a separate statement, the ECERDC said the manufacturing sector accounted for 59 per cent of the RM6.4 billion realised investments. The council said Pahang led the list with realised investments totalling RM4 billion, followed by Terengganu (RM1.3 billion) and Kelantan (RM1.1 billion), while Johor saw RM13.3 million of investments in agriculture from the development of a biocompost facility in Mersing.
