Warriors Announce Injury Update for Key Player Before Crucial Game 7

Yahoo04-05-2025
The Golden State Warriors face the Houston Rockets in Game 7 of their first-round playoff series on Sunday in Houston. Steve Kerr's group is looking to avoid blowing another 3-1 series lead.
Golden State, of course, lost the 2016 NBA Finals to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers after owning a 3-1 advantage.

The Warriors won Game 1 in Houston but lost Games 2 and 5 on the road. To make matters worse, Golden State could be without a key player in Game 7.
The Dubs announced that Gary Payton II is questionable to play in Game 7 due to an illness.
Payton II is averaging 6.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 0.8 steals in the Rockets-Warriors series while shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from beyond the arc. The lefty hasn't been to the free-throw line.
Houston has all the momentum going into Game 7 after winning Games 5 and 6. However, Golden State head coach Steve Kerr said his group is ready to roll for Game 7.

"Staying together will not be an issue," Kerr said after Game 6. "This team has been connected and has been through everything. There's no question the frustration tonight set in. I could see it. The body language. We can't have that. We can't afford that in Game 7.

"We've got to stay tight the whole way through. I like our chances. I've seen what this group can do over the years. We've been in a lot of Game 7s, had a lot of success. Jimmy Butler is Jimmy Butler. He's been in all of these games. He's one of the clutch performers in the league, so ... we'll get ready. We'll regroup, be ready to roll."
If Payton II doesn't play in Game 7, Buddy Hield will likely start in his place.

Warriors cop brutal new setback as anger mounts over NRL's response to illegal act

The Warriors' injury-plagued NRL season has gone from bad to worse after confirmation back-rower Jacob Laban has suffered a broken leg after an illegal tackle from Felise Kaufusi. The Dolphins star was hit with a two-game ban after the match review committee handed him a grade two dangerous contact charge for coming in as the third man and targeting the legs of the Warriors star in the tackle. But the Warriors are reportedly 'fuming' about the grading and the two-game ban for Kaufusi, after seeing their playe wiped out for the rest of the regular season, as a result of the tackle. It's understood the Auckland-based club are calling on the NRL to implement a change to their judiciary process that takes into account the extent of injury to players, before suspensions are handed down. Laban was in obvious pain after being hit low from Kaufusi in the second half of his side's heartbreaking late defeat to the Dolphins, with Faufusi subsequently sent to the sin bin. The Warriors forward was already wrapped up in the tackle by two other Dolphins defenders when Kaufusi entered the fray as the third man in and targeted his legs, causing them to twist awkwardly and leaving Laban crying out in agony. The back-rower was helped off the field by Warriors medical staff and played no further part in the contest as Jamayne Isaako snatched a 20-18 win for the Dolphins with a try in the dying stages. It's since been confirmed that Laban suffered a broken leg and is set to be sidelined for at least the next six weeks, continuing a wretched spate of injuries for the Warriors. They are already missing a host of first-team regulars including Mitch Barnett, Luke Metcalf, Rocco Berry and James Fisher-Harris and have seen their top-four hopes take a massive hit. Warriors question two-game ban for Felise Kaufusi And according to Code Sports, furious Warriors officials believe the match review committee should have upgraded Kaufusi's charge and handed him a longer suspension after learning the extent of Laban's injury. The NRL has maintained that charges for illegal acts are made on the basis of potential 'risk of injury', rather than the 'outcome of injury'. But the Warriors are unhappy that the charge was handed down to Kaufusi before they'd received confirmation of Laban's broken leg. And it's led to questions about why the NRL didn't choose to adopt a new rule brought in by the ARL Commission, that could have seen Kaufusi hit with a more significant suspension. The ARLC recently announced a change to the judiciary process that gives it powers to upgrade or downgrade charges, and even hand down fresh sanctions for on-field incidents. And the Warriors clearly believe Kaufusi's punishment is incongruous with the damage done to their player. Andrew Johns wants third man in tackles stamped out of NRL Kaufusi's suspension comes after league 'Immortal' Andrew Johns called on the NRL to crack down hard on third man in tackles to try and eliminate the controversial practice from the game. His fury came after Karl Lawton's tackle on Siua Wong in June that left the Roosters star with a serious knee injury and saw the Cowboys forward slapped with a two-game ban. "If you have two players in the tackle, and momentum is pretty much (stopped), that third man shouldn't be able to go in like that. A couple of years ago we saw Liam Knight get hit from behind and it pretty much destroyed every ligament in his knee. "The player cannot see it coming. And what's come into the game is they back into the tackle so they can see the third man coming in and spearing at the knee. And what's happened with that happening is we have crushers coming into the game, because of players turning and twisting looking for that third man." Andrew Webster confirmed Jacob Laban out for 4-6 weeks with leg fracture after Kaufisi tackle. He didnt comment too much, but is obvious club are very displeased that injury to Laban wasn't taken into account when assessing Kaufisi punishment. @NZWarriors @nzheraldsport — Michael Burgess (@mikeburgess99) August 5, 2025 The Warriors are seething after the cannonball tackle that injured Jacob Laban resulted in a broken saw Felise Kaufusi charged with a grade two NRL rejected to implement their controversial new rule that allows the ARLC to upgrade Kaufusi's charge.📝 DT — The League Scene (@LeagueScenePod) August 4, 2025 These tackles are squarely the fault of the nrl and referees. In days gone once called held, play the ball, no passing, no post contact metres, no throwing to the ground - no walking off the mark. Now they let it go calling held 3 or 4 times. Players then come in late. — Joey M (@JoeyM38668349) August 4, 2025 They shouldn't need to implement additional powers. If the people in the MRC are being too soft, direct them to get tougher or sack them and replace them with people who will. — Jeff Smith (@Jeffro6366) August 4, 2025

Ime Udoka, Fred VanVleet traveled to Turkey to work with Rockets star Alperen Sengun

With Alperen Sengun spending more time than usual in Turkey in the 2025 offseason, the Rockets sent even more big names there to work with him. All-Star center Alperen Sengun spends at least a portion of each NBA offseason in his native Turkey. He typically still works out and does basketball activities in the gym during that time, but it's an opportunity for the 23-year-old to be surrounded by family and friends from his homeland for at least a few weeks. In the 2025 offseason, however, the Rockets star is spending a bit more time at home due to his inclusion on Turkey's FIBA EuroBasket 2025 squad (which opens play later this month). So, rather than waiting for Sengun to eventually return to his NBA home, Houston is sending its leadership to him. As shown in photos posted on the team's official social media accounts, head coach Ime Udoka and starting point guard Fred VanVleet each recently spent time with Sengun in a Turkish gym. It's nothing too out of the ordinary. In past offseasons, it was typically an assistant coach from the Rockets that went to visit Sengun in Turkey. But with expectations higher than ever after the Kevin Durant trade and Sengun's timeline for returning to the United States delayed due to the EuroBasket competition, the Rockets sent even bigger names to Turkey in 2025. The hope is that it allows Sengun, VanVleet, and the rest of their teammates on the 2025-26 Rockets to hit the ground running when training camps open around October 1. In 2024-25, Sengun averaged 19.1 points and a career-high 10.3 rebounds in earning his first career All-Star honors. Houston went 52-30 and finished at No. 2 in the Western Conference standings, and Sengun led the Rockets in rebounding while finishing second in scoring and assists on a per-game basis. Golden State Warriors jersey history - No. 20 - Chick Halbert (1947-48)

The Golden State Warriors have had over 600 players don the more than 60 jersey numbers used by their players over the more than 75 years of existence the team has enjoyed in its rich and storied history. Founded in 1946 during the Basketball Association of America (BAA -- a precursor league of the NBA) era, the team has called home the cities of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Oakland, and even San Diego. To commemorate the players who wore those numbers, Warriors Wire is covering the entire history of jersey numbers and the players who sported them since the founding of the team. For this article, we begin with the first of 29 players who wore the No. 20 jersey for the Warriors. That player would be Golden State big man alum Chick Halbert. After ending his college career at West Texas A&M University, Halbert joined (defunct) Chicago Stags in their (and the BAA's) first-ever season of existence, 1946. The Albany, Texas native joined the (then) Philadelphia (now, Golden State) Warriors in 1947 for just 40 games before he'd be dealt to the Boston Celtics in 1948. During his time suiting up for the Warriors, Halbert wore only jersey No. 20 and put up 10.5 points per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference.
